  • Lean combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a ethanol fueled spark-ignited engine according to ethanol-gasoline fuel blending ratio were investigated. The test engine was $1591cm^3$ and 10.5 of compression ratio SI engine with 4 cylinders. In addition, lambda sensor system was connected with universal ECU to control the lambda value which is varied from 1.0 to 1.5. The engine performance and lean combustion characteristics such as brake torque, cylinder pressure and rate of heat release were investigated according to ethanol-gasoline fuel blending ratio. Furthermore, the exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) were measured by emission analyzers. The results showed that the brake torque, cylinder pressure and the stability of engine operation were increased as ethanol blending ratio is increased. Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was increased in higher ethanol blending ratio while brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) was decreased in higher ethanol blending ratio. The exhaust emissions were decreased as ethanol blending ratio is increased under overall experimental conditions, however, some specific exhaust emission characteristics were mainly influenced by lambda value and ethanol-gasoline fuel blending ratio.

  • In this study, performance and emissions characteristics of an liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engine converted from a diesel engine were examined by using mixer system and liquid propane injection (LPi) system fuel supply methods. A compression ratio for the base diesel engine, 21, was modified into 8, 8.5, 9 and 9.5. The cylinder head and the piston crown were modified to roe the LPG in the engine. Ignition timing was controlled to be at minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT) each case. Engine performance and emissions characteristics are analyzed by investigating engine power, brake mean effective pressure (BMEP), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), volumetric efficiency, CO, THC and NOx. Experimental results showed that the LPi system generates higher power and lower emissions than the conventional mixer fuel supply method.

  • In this study, the characteristics of decreasing exhaust gas of diesel engine was examined in dual fuel method by using commertial LPG for automotive. LPG was supplied to engine intake port by fumigation method and flow rate was controlled by using the needle valve. LPG supply ratios were 0, 20, 30% of total fuel amount to be supplied to engine by mass base. We investigated the effect of LPG supply ratio on exhaust gas concentrations related to excess air ratio and engine load at 1600, 1800, 2000 rpm. Soot concentration decreased about 30% in proportion to the increase of the LPG supply ratio. NOx concentration decreased in proportion to the increase of the LPG than diesel only and the increase rate was higher at low engine load. BSFC(Brake specific fuel consumption) was lower in proportion to the increase of the LPG supply ratio at high engine load and to the decrease of LPG supply ratio at low engine load.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of water injection on combustion characteristics of gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine with turbo-charger under low-load operating condition. The test engine used in this study has four-cylinder and 10.2 of compression ratio. In order to study the effect of water injection ratio on combustion characteristics, the water was injected into the intake port from 10% to 50%, based on fuel injection quantity. From the experiment, it revealed that the water injection induced the improvement of fuel economy because of the advance of spark-timing by the reduction of in-cylinder temperature. In addition, the water injection caused the prolong of extension of the ignition delay and slight increase of burn duration.

  • Turbocompounding is a key technology to satisfy the future requirements of diesel engine's fuel economy and emission reduction. A turbocompound diesel engine was developed based on a conventional 11-Liter heavy-duty diesel engine. The turbocompound system includes a power turbine, which is installed downstream of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) turbine. The impacts of the VGT rack position on the turbocompound engine performance were studied. An optimal VGT control strategy was determined. Experimental results show that the turbocompound engine using the optimal VGT control strategy achieves better performance than the original engine under all full load operation conditions. The averaged and maximum reductions of the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) are 3% and 8% respectively.

  • The purpose of this paper is to experimentally investigate the engine pollutant emissions and combustion characteristics of diesel engine fueled with ethanol-diesel blended fuel (bio-diesohol). The experiments were performed on a single-cylinder DI diesel engine. Two blend fuels were consisted of $15\%$ ethanol, $83.5\%$ diesel and $1.5\%$ solublizer (by volume) were evaluated: one without cetane improver (E15-D) and one with a cetane improver (E15-D+CN improver). The engine performance parameters and emissions including fuel consumption, exhaust temperature, lubricating oil temperature, Bosch smoke number, CO, NOx, and THC were measured, and compared to the baseline diesel fuel. In order to gain insight into the combustion characteristics of bio-diesohol blends, the engine combustion processes for blended fuels and diesel fuel were observed using an Engine Video System (AVL 513). The results showed that the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increased at overall engine operating conditions, but it is worth noting that the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased by up to $1-2.3\%$ with two blends when compared to diesel fuel. It is found that the engine fueled with ethanol-diesel blend fuels has higher emissions of THC, lower emissions of CO, NOx, and smoke. And the results also indicated that the cetane improver has positive effects on CO and NOx emissions, but negative effect on THC emission. Based on engine combustion visualization, it is found that ignition delay increased, combustion duration and the luminosity of flame decreased for the diesohol blends. The combustion is improved when the CN improver was added to the blend fuel.
