  • CADIA(Computer-assisted densitometric image analysis) method is used to analyze bone density changes around the implants. The usefullness and reproducibility of the method was assessed. We tried to find out if there is any possibility to quantitiate and qualitify peri-implant bone density change as time passes. And we concluded that this newly developed linear analysis is efficient for analyzing peri-implant bone density change non-Invasively. In this study, 2152 machined $Br{\aa}nemark$ fixtures installed from 1994 to 2002 in the department of Periodontics, Dental hospital of College of Dentistry, Yonsei University were included. Of these fixtures 22 radiographically analyzable failed fixtures were used as experimental group, and 22 successful implants placed in the same patient were used as control group. 1. 57 out of 1635 machined $Br{\aa}nemark$ standard and Mk II implants system failed, the survival rate was 96.5%. And 11 out of 517 machined $Br{\aa}nemark$ Mk III and Mk IV implants system failed, the survival rate was 97.9%. Total survival rate was 96.8%. 2. 22 failed implants were used for the analysis, 10 of which failed before prosthetic treatment due to infection and overheating. 12 failed due to overload after prosthetic treatment, 63.6% of which failed during the early phase of functional loading, i, e. before 1 year of loading. 3. Bone density change values around coronal region of the failed implants were $-6.54{\pm}6.35$, middle region were $-3.53{\pm}5.78$, apical region were $-0.75{\pm}10.33$, resulting in average of $-3.71{\pm}8.03$. 4. Bone density change values around coronal region of the successful implants were $4.25{\pm}4.66$, middle region were $6.33{\pm}5.02$, apical region were $9.89{\pm}4.67$, resulting in average of $6.27{\pm}5.29$. 5. There was a statistically significant difference between two groups (p<0.01). In conclusion, the linear analysis method using computer-assisted densitometric image analysis could be a useful method for the analysis of implants, and could be used for future implant researchs.

  • Since the treatment of edentulous patients with osseointegrated implant was first introduced more than 30 years ago, implant therapy has become one of the most important dental treatment modalities today. Based on the previous experience and knowledge, $Br{\aa}nemark\;Novum^{(R)}$ protocol was introduced with the concept of simplifying surgical and prosthetic technique and reducing healing time recently. This protocol recommends the installation of three 5mm wide diameter futures in anterior mandible and the prefabricated titanium bars for superstructure fabrication. This study was designed to analyze the stress distribution at fixture and superstructure area according to changes of fixture number, diameter and superstructure materials. Four 3-dimensional finite element models were fabricated. Model 1 - 5 standard fixtures (13mm long and 3.75mm in diameter) & superstructure consisted of type IV gold alloy and resin Model 2- 3 wide diameter fixtures (13mm long and 5.0mm in diameter) & superstructure consisted of type IV gold alloy and resin Model 3-3 wide diameter fixtures (13mm long and 5.0mm in diameter) & superstructure consisted of titanium and resin Model 4-3 wide diameter fixtures (13mm long and 5.0mm in diameter) & superstructure consisted of titanium and porcelain A 150N occlusal force was applied on the 1st molar of each model in 3 directions - vertical($90^{\circ}$), horizontal($0^{\circ}$) and oblique($120^{\circ}$). After analyzing the stresses and displacements, following results were obtained. 1. There were no significant difference in stress distribution among experimental models. 2. Model 2, 3, 4 showed less amount of compressive stress than that of model 1. However, tensile stress was similar. 3. Veneer material with a high modulus of elasticity demonstrated less stress accumulation in the superstructure. Within the limites of this study, $Br{\aa}nemark\;Novum^{(R)}$ protocol demonstrated comparable biomechanical properties to conventional protocol.

  • This study was carried out in order to find out the pattern of the root resorption following maxillary incisor retraction after maxillary 1st bicuspid extration in maxillary protrusion patients. For this study, thirty two patient who received orthodontic treatment were chosen. The results were as follows; 1. Of the total 192 teeth, 61 teeth(31.77%) showed no apical root loss, 64 teeth(33.33%) fell into the class "slight", 46 teeth(23.96%) fell into the class "moderate". Only 21 teeth(10.94%) were classified as "excessive". 2. No correlation was noted between the amount of apical root loss and the types of tooth movement of the maxillary central incisors. 3. The patients who were treated with standard brackets had more changes in tooth axis and less movement of root apexes, but the patients with straight brackets had less changes in tooth axis and more movement of root apexes. 4. Comparing the degree of root resorption between bracket types, patients who had used standard brackets showed more apical root loss than patients who had used straight brackets. 5. The most frequent degree of root resorption observed in standard bracket patients was second degree, followed by first degree and third degree. The most frequent degree of root resorption observed in straight bracket patients was zero degree, followed by first, second degree and third degree.

  • The predictable outcome of implant placement in the atrophic maxilla with sinus floor elevation procedure(osteotome sinus floor elevation technique and window opening technique) is well documented. Aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite implant system and ITI SLA implant system placed in the atrophic posterior maxilla with sinus floor elevation procedure. Eighty patients received placement of $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite implants(195 implants) in their atrophic posterior Maxilla with sinus floor elevation procedure(153 osteotome sinus floor elevation technique and 42 window opening procedure). Fifty patients received placement of ITI SLA implants(83 implants) in their atrophic posterior Maxilla with sinus floor elevation procedure(77 osteotome sinus floor elevation technique and 6 window opening procedure). Chart review were taken from each patient. The total failed implants were seven and the total implant survival rate was 96.4% in $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite system. The total failed implants were one and the total implant survival rate was 98.8% in ITI SLA system. The implant survival rate with osteotome technique was 96% and 97.6% with window opening in $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite system. The implant survival rate with osteotome technique was 98.7% and 100% with window opening. The implant survival rate with osteotome technique was 96% and 97.6% with window opening in ITI SLA system. The results of this evaluation show that the placement of $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite system as well as ITI SLA system is a reasonable treatment option for patients with the atrophic posterior maxillary area.

  • Neutral red5 (BR 5) adsorption from aqueous solution was investigated. New solid adsorbent was prepared from paper sludge incinerated at $250^{\circ}C$ during 2 hours. Experiments were carried out, in batch system, to remove RB5 dye from the synthetic waste water. Maximum adsorption of 374.98 mg/g at pH 5, at room temperature and contact time of 80 min was obtained. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to interpret the equilibrium isotherm. The Freundlich isotherm fits quite well with the experimental data (with highly regression coefficient $R^2$). The incinerated sludge solid samples untreated and treated with BR5 dye were characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometer.

  • This research investigates the effect of the Crataegus pinnatifida BGE. var. major N.E. BR(CPVM) on Alzheimer's disease. The CPVM extract suppressed the expression of IL-1 β, IL-6, APP, AChE mRNA in PC-12 cells treated with CT105. The CPVM extract suppressed the AChE activity, and the production of APP significantly in PC-12 cells treated with CT105. The CPVM extract group showed a significant inhibitory effect on the memory deficit for the mice with Alzheimer's disease induced by CT105 in the Morris water maze experiment. The CPVM extract suppressed the over-expression of IL-1 β, TNF- α and ROS in the mice with Alzheimer's disease induced by CT105. This study suggests that CPVM may be effective for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

  • The chromosomal DNA of Klebsiella penumoniae KNF1 was partially digested with HindIII. pBR322 was completely digested with same enzyme with additional alkaline phosphatase treatment. Both DNA samples were ligated and transformed into E. coli KO60. Single coloneis of the transformed cells were isolated on N0free agar media. These colonies were ampicillin-resistant and tetracycline-sensitive. When the plasmids in transformants were cured, nitrogen-fixing activities were lost. Therefore, these transformants harbored recombinant plasmid including nif genes of K. pneumoniae. Nitrogenase activity of transformant was higher than or the same as that of K. pneumoniae KNF1.

  • There has been some evidence concerning the fact that trihalomethanes(THMs), toxic chlorinated compounds, may be present in drinking water. One of the important methodologies to evaluate the toxicity of THMs is to determine enzyme alteration in experimental animal tissues after treatment. This study was intended to investigate how lactic dehydrogenase(LDH) of rat tissues is affected by administration of chloroform($CHCl_3$) and dichloromonobromomethane($CHCl_2\;Br$). THMs, high dose(1/10 LD50) or low dose(1/50 LD50) of $CHCl_3$ or $CHCl_{2}Br$ were administered orally to experimental rats for 4 or 8 weeks. The treated groups of rats were sacrificed to determine LDH specific activity and isozyme pattern in various organs which were liver, thigh muscle, kidney and brain. The conclusions were obtained as follows: 1. Alteration of LDH activities and isozyme patterns were revealed before morphologic changes in tissues. 2. The LDH specific activities were increased significantly in liver and brain after administration of high concentrations of $CHCl_3$ and $CHCl_{2}Br$ for 4 weeks respectively. Otherwise, they were decreased significantly in liver, muscle and kidney after administration for 8 weeks. 3. The isozyme activities of LDH-4 and LDH-5 were increased in muscle, brain, and especially the liver. 4. It was more distinct for the decrement of LDH H-type isozyme than the increment of M-type isozyme in muscle.

  • The effect of die upset and heat treatment on the magnetic properties of mechanically ground $Nd_{16}Fe_{78}B_{6}$ alloys has been studied. Although stripe domain patterns parallel to the compression direction were observed after die upset, it was found that crystallographic c-axes of a specimen were not completely aligned along the compression direction' which resulted in the decrease of Br. The average grain size of a die-upset specimen annealed for 5 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$ was about $20\mu\textrm{m}$, resulting in reduced values of Br and $_{i}H_{c}$. The maximum magnetic properties (Br=7.8 kG and $(_{i}H_{c}=14\;kOe) were obtained from the magnet die-upset at $750^{\circ}C$ using the alloy powder ground for 13 hours.

  • Background: Among the factors reported to determine the quality of life of breast cancer patients are socio-demographic background, clinical stage, type of treatment received, and the duration since diagnosis. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the quality of life (QOL) scores among breast cancer patients at a Malaysian public hospital. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study of breast cancer patients was conducted between March to June 2013. QOL scores were determined using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and its breast cancer supplementary measure (QLQ-BR23). Both the QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 assess items from functional and symptom scales. The QLQ-C30 in addition also measures the Global Health Status (GHS). Systematic random sampling was used to recruit patients. Results: 223 breast cancer patients were recruited with a response rate of 92.1%. The mean age of the patients was 52.4 years (95% CI = 51.0, 53.7, SD=10.3). Majority of respondents are Malays (60.5%), followed by Chinese (19.3%), Indians (18.4%), and others (1.8%). More than 50% of respondents are at stage III and stage IV of malignancy. The mean Global Health Status was 65.7 (SD = 21.4). From the QLQ-C30, the mean score in the functioning scale was highest for 'cognitive functioning' (84.1, SD=18.0), while the mean score in the symptom scale was highest for 'financial difficulties' (40.1, SD=31.6). From the QLQ-BR23, the mean score for functioning scale was highest for 'body image' (80.0, SD=24.6) while the mean score in the symptom scale was highest for 'upset by hair loss' (36.2, SD=29.4). Two significant predictors for Global Health Status were age and employment. The predictors explained 10.6% of the variation of global health status ($R^2=0.106$). Conclusions: Age and employment were found to be significant predictors for Global Health Status (GHS). The Quality of Life among breast cancer patients reflected by the GHS improves as age and employment increases.
