  • This study was carried out to investigate removal character of nitrogen and phosphorus with injection time of acetic acid on SBR, which is one of the biological treatment process. Wastewater used in experiment period was swine wastewater with character, relatively lower organic material concentration than nitrogen concentration. In the experiment with injection time of acetic acid, run 1 wasn't injected acetic acid during the anoxic period, and run 2 was injected intermittently acetic acid during the anoxic period of 15 hours. And run 3 was injected intermittently during the anoxic period of 3hours from end of wastewater filling. And filing time of the wastewater was 20hour from run 1 to run 3. In the study, the highest removal efficiency of organic and nitrogen were obtained by the operating condition of Run 2(the ratio of mixing/aeration time : 16.5/5.5, injection time of acetic acid : 15hours) and T-P was obtained by the operation condition of Run 3(the ratio of mixing/aeration time : 16.5/5.5, injection time of acetic acid : 3hours),and removal efficiency of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, $COD_{Cr}$, T-N and T-P in the treated water was 96.1%, 87.7%, 90.6%, 86.6% and 84.5%, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate air injection mode on stabilization of solid waste in lysimeter. For three lysimeters, one was maintained under anaerobic condition as control, and air was injected into two lysimeters in continuous mode (atmospheric pressure) and intermittent mode (high pressure of 2 bar). Distilled water was sprayed over solid waste in 1.4 l/$m^3$(solid waste)/day, supposing rainfall intensity of 1,200 mm/yr and 30% infiltration. Oxygen in landfill gas was not detected in control lysimeter during operational days. After 30 day-aeration, oxygen concentrations of continuous and intermittent modes were maintained in 14% and 6%, respectively. $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiencies of continuous and intermittent modes were about 70% and 50%, and BOD5 removal efficiencies were about 80% and 20%, respectively. In view of oxygen supply, and $COD_{Cr}$ and $BOD_5$ removal, continuous air injection mode of atmospheric pressure was more effective than intermittent mode of 2 bar. Settling degree of solid waste in case of two air injection modes was 3 times higher than that of anaerobic condition as control. Considering the above results, it was thought that air injection (especially continuous atmospheric pressure) could improve degradation of solid waste and induce preliminary stabilization in landfill site.

  • To investigate factors affecting the removal of phosphorus from the practical wastewater in the F-STEP PROCESS using a loess ball and Chromobacterium WS 2-14, first, the loess ball size and calcining temperature, initial pH, initial phosphorus concentration, working temperature, and aeration were studied. A $2\~4mm$ of loess ball made at $960^{\circ}C$ of calcining temperature was the most suitable one for the removal of phosphorus. When the initial pH was increased from 3.0 to 6.0, the removal efficiency of phosphorus was increased. Especially, at 6.0 of initial pH, the maximum removal efficiency of phosphorus was $88.7\%$. The maximum removal efficiency of phosphorous was gained, 1.8mg/h when the initial concentration of phosphorous was 5.0mg/1. When the operating temperature was $30^{\circ}C$, the maximum removal efficiency of phosphorus was obtained. In the case of aeration, when it was increased from 0.5 to 5.0L/min, the removal efficiency of phosphorus was increased. On the other hand, above 7.0 L/min, the removal efficiency of phosphorus did not increased. Using the optimum operation conditions, pilot tests for the effective removal efficiency of phosphorus were carried out for 65 days. The average removal efficiency of phosphorus was $92.0\%$. The average removal efficiency of COD, BOD, and SS were 77.1, 74.2, and $86.4\%$, respectively. from the results, it can be concluded that F-STEP PROCESS using loess ball might be useful process for phosphorus removal.

  • The rationale for the use of fungi in treating waste streams from food processing plants I~as been that of incorporating the dissolved and suspending nutrients into a macroscopic organism which can be filtered out readily. In order for a process using fungi to meet these objectives we examined a strain of fungi, Aspergillus fumigatus, which grew well on a variety of polysaccharide-containing materials and showed both efficient BOD removal and high quality protein recovery. In this experiment the fungal choice was based on the laboratory screening studies where the criteria used was BOD and COD reduction, growth response, mycelial yield, and the ability to compete with the natural flora. In the fermentation system used far the continuous culture of Aspergillus fumigatus the best combination of operating variables, inoculum ratio, temperature, initial pH, fermentation time and agitation rate was 5%(v/v), $35{\sim}40^{circ}C,\;pH\;4.5{\sim}5.0$, 2days and 150rpm, respectively. The fungus reduced BOD and COD to 94.0 and 90.4%, respectively and 3.15g of dry mycelium per liter of alcohol waste was harvested during 48hr of incubation time. The protein efficiency ratios for the control diet and the experimental diet containing the fungal protein were $3.42{\pm}0.15$ and $3.40{\pm}0.43$, respectively.

  • It is really urgent to develop wastewater treatment system which is economically efficient, occupies small area for buildup, can be easily operated, discharges small amount of sludge due to the more strict water quality standard, the expensive water and energy cost and so on. This study on treatment of wastewater including nonbiodegadable materials using white-rot fungus biofilm were designed to investigate the submerged type of biofilm, hydraulic retention times, recycle rates, and module turning times. Removal efficiencies of fully exposed biofilm type in atmosphere are similar to submerged biofilm of aeration type. The optimum conditions of white-rot fungus biofilm of fully exposed type in atmosphere are HRT 3$\sim$4 hr, recycle rate 6$\sim$10 Q, module turning times 0.5$\sim$2 times/min. At this time, removal efficiencies of organics were COD$_{Cr}$ 65.0$\sim$69.9%, NBDCOD 70.4$\sim$72.7%, BOD$_5$ 88.8$\sim$90.1%, SS 84.2$\sim$90.4%. Moreover average effluent concentration of BOD$_5$(8.9 mg/L) satisfied water quality standard of heavy water(BOD$_5$ less than 10 mg/L) but concentration of NBDCOD(29.6 mg/L) was higher than water quality standard of heavy water(NBDCOD less than 20 mg/L).

  • This study intends to evaluate the efficiency of non-point source reduction technique by using the porous lightweight and recycled aggregate which microorganism is seeded. In case of infiltration velocity 30~70 mm/hr in high concentration of influent, it is indicated that SS was 40~94%, COD 44~91%, BOD 4~91%, TN 1.2~66%, TP 7~70% of removal efficiency. Removal efficiency is good in infiltration velocity 30 > 50 > 70㎜/hr order. Therefore, the non-point source treatment facility filled with lightweight and recycled aggregate using microbial seeding shows higher removal efficiency than a conventional sand and gravel. We confirm that the function and efficiency are improved significantly and applied to treat non-point sources.

  • This study was performed to investigate the physical characteristics like compressive strength, permeability, porosity and the water quality removal characteristics of permeable concrete pavement filled with microbial-soil sheet to remove SS, organic matter and nutrients in artificial rainfall. As a result, it can show the removal efficiency is SS 90~95%, COD 85~93%, BOD 80~83%, T-N 61~75%, T-P 71~78% on WAPS I(W1) and WAPS II(W2). Therefore, permeable concrete pavement filled with microbial-soil sheet shows higher removal efficiency(SS 10%, organic matter and nutrients 30%) than a conventional porous concrete(W3). By filling microbial-soil sheet to permeable concrete pavement, we confirm that the function and efficiency are improved significantly and that a naturally-friendly facility can be developed and applied to treat non-point sources.

  • A biological anoxic-aerobic reactor filled with porous media was operated in lab scale for the advanced wastewater treatment. The experiments were conducted for 6 months with three HRTs (4, 6, 8hr) and temperature of $23{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. Some other experimental conditions were as follows; nitrification reactor (MLSS 4,500mg/L, DO 3.3mg/L, $23{\sim}28^{\circ}C$), denitrification reactor(MLSS 8,000mg/L, ORP -100mV, Temp.$19{\sim}23^{\circ}C$). Average removal efficiencies of SS, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Cr}$, T-N, and T-P were 97.8%, 95.5%, 94.5%, 80.2%, and 60.6%, respectively. The reactor filled with porosity media showed stable removal capacity for organics and nutrients. Fast and complete nitrification and denitrification were accomplished. Maintaining high MLSS with porous media in the nitrification and denitrification reactor appears to enhance the nitrogen removal process. For the higher T-P removal, some coagulant addition process will be needed.

  • Anaerobic sewage treatment is drawing attentions due to high energy consumptions and sludge production associated with aerobic treatment. This study evaluates the treatment characteristics and energy balance of a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) for treating domestic sewage at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for 245 days. Sewage fed to the FBR was a primary clarifier effluent of a domestic sewage treatment plant with COD of 99-301 mg/L and $BOD_{5}$ of 37-149 mg/L. Effluent $SBOD_{5}$ and its removal efficiency at HRT of 1~3 h were 6~15 mg/L and 73.4~85.5%, respectively, achieving high removal efficiency for soluble organic substances even at short HRTs. COD removal efficiency and its effluent concentration were 53.8~75.9% and 51~83 mg/L, respectively. The energy production potential from gaseous methane was 0.009-0.028 kWh/$m^{3}$, which satisfies the energy required for the FBR operation.
