  • Biomass to Liquid (BTL) is an attractive option for using biomass as an renewable energy. A syngas supplying system has been designed for BTL system, based on the Fischer-Tropsche (FT) process, and long-term operation test was conducted. The syngas supplying system is composed of a fluidized bed gasifier, gas cleaning and compression system, and methanol absorption system. Stable operation of more than hundred hours was achieved with several champaigns. In addition, a pilot scale biomass gasifier has been developed for 1 bbl/day BTL system and its performance was evaluated. Some preliminary results and current status of the development of BTL system will be presented.

  • Diversification of combustion fuel is the demands of the times and biomass is the most attractive option since it can contribute to the prevention of global warming at the same time. Due to the national renewable obligation, generally called Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), many power companies are considering direct combustion of biomass or co-firing with coal. In order to use biomass as a fuel, informations of its combustion characteristics and ash related problems should be investigated. In this study, combustion performance of biomass was assessed in a bubbling fluidized bed combustor, and ash characteristics of various biomass fuels were studied with standard test method.

  • The focus of this study was to observe the growth of Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii under mixotrophic conditions (i.e., added acorn) with the aim of increasing biomass and triacylglycerols (TAGs) content. The result of investigation indicated that the acorn contains a lot of carbonate (87.29%) and glucose (97.99 mg%). A significant growth of biomass was obtained when grown in acorn rich environment comparing to autotrophic conditions. 3 g/L acorn yielded the highest biomass concentration for these strains. Thus, the biomass productivity with 3 g/L acorn was obtained 2.31 times and 2.10 times higher than that of authotrophic conditions for Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, respectively. The maximum amount of TAGs was reached 14.35% and 18.41% for Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, respectively, in the growth medium with 5 g/L acorn. The effect of acorn could enhance the investigated microalgae growth, biomass productivity and TAGs content. This provides a feasible way to reduce the cost of bioenergy production from microalgae.

  • Utilization of biomass as a substitute fuel for conventional energy systems have been grown larger everyday in the world. In particular, co-firing of biomass in a large coal power plant are common in Korea after the introduction of RPS since 2012, and the application of biomass-derived fuel is now spreading to district heating and power, industrial energy supply, and transportation sectors. For biomass to energy, appropriate conversion process is needed to satisfy the fuel requirements of a specific energy system. In this study, various kinds of thermochemical conversion technologies will be presented for renewable fuel productions from biomass.

  • Recently, many researches on the biomass of the agricultural and livestock wastes are being conducted in several respects. The use of biomass is of benefit to the curtailment of oil import, environmental pollution decrease, global warming mitigation and so on. And, in the agricultural sphere, making use of agricultural byproducts can contribute to the revitalization of the agricultural industry and rural community. In other words, making new products or energy by using biomass have a possibility to be developed as a new industry. The industry can create new businesses and job opportunities for rural dwellers. Also, major 3 positive effects of market formation for the agricultural wastes, increase of the idle land use and creation of the new business are expected. However, the use of biomass may be difficult to secure a proper right as a market good in the autonomic market economy. It is necessary to establish or amend related laws or systematic tools for the revitalization of the biomass use. Also, it is required for the government to bear partial costs of the facilities and others in the beginning stage.

  • We Investigated minutely how the biosorption technology using algal biomass is opened in Canadian technology society. Making comparative study for relative technologies in views of overall unit operation cost, we could grasp next facts. - Algal biomass plays the competitive performance for various metals. - Algal biomass biosorbent is regenerated. - Reactor system is not and involved one. This means that algal biomass occupies the strong position as biosorbent. Especially, in North America, for the purpose of metal bearing wastewater treatment, 20 hundred million US dollars was appropriated a sum for the purchase of ion exchange resin. But it is only thirty million US dollars if algal biomass biosorbent is used on behalf of ion exchange resin. Furthermore, the expenses for same treatment can be cut down additively through metal recovery.

  • The high costs for ethanol production with lignocellulosic biomass as a second generation energy materials currently deter commercialization of lignocellulosic biomass, especially wood biomass which is considered as the most recalcitrant material for enzymatic hydrolysis mainly due to the high lignified structure and the nature of the lignin component. Therefore, overcoming recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass for converting carbohydrates into sugar that can subsequently be converted into biobased fuels and biobased products is the primary technical and economic challenge for bioconversion process. This study was mainly reviewed on the research trend of the enhancement of enzymatic hydrolysis for lignocellulosic biomass after pretreatment in bioethanol production process.

  • In compare with a major developed countries, Korea consumes much energy, but also eliminates much carbon dioxide. Agricultural sector eliminate much carbon dioxide than industrial sector. In Kyoto protocol, Korea needs to reduce carbon dioxide. One way to reduce carbon dioxide is utilization of biomass in rural area. This paper focus on utilization of biomass in rural area. If use 20% potential amount of biomass, it obtain 50% of TPES on agricultural sector. The condition of utilization biomass is connected with agricultural policy, environmental policy, and energy policy. And environmental restriction keep pace with economical incentive.

  • Elemental data was collected for agricultural biomass such as pruned branches with respect to unit area production and heating values. The results indicated that higher heating values for the biomass was comparable to those of woody biomass. Approximate estimations of power generation from biomass showed that over 100kW power plants could be installed in some districts.

  • The terminology of bioenergy means the biomass. The urge to make biomass more Quantitative has led to the wide spread Inclusion of plants, grains and all organic substances. Biomass for nonelectrical uses In the our country accounts for approximately 2∼3% of the total energy consumption In 1999. Biomass also generally produces lower gas pollutant omission than fossil energies and to attractive because It's a renewable energy source .
