  • When Building Information Modeling (BIM) was introduced at the early stage, it was only utilized as a three-dimensional visualization tool. Nowadays, however, BIM is being studied for increasing design productivity and managing enormous information on building life cycle. One of the representative research is developing 'common prototype BIM libraries'. BIM data made of common prototype libraries should be utilized in various ways, quantity takeoff, code checking, energy analysis and so on. However, common prototype BIM libraries are not enough to estimate accurate cost. For example, composite wall libraries should be divided into several single objects, wall structure and finishes, for the quantity takeoff and construction cost calculation. In this paper, we are suggesting an automated division algorithm of composite wall and developing a system prototype for it. This study is expected to reduce extra modeling work and contribute to fast and accurate cost calculation in the construction.

  • BIM has been a reliable construction project management tool to handle various kinds of construction information generated in the facility life cycle. To take these advantages, researchers have been promoted numerous studies in a residential, a commercial, and an educational facilities with a large number of on-going projects. However, despite running as the role of essential energy supplier, power plant related BIM research is relatively insufficient than others. In particular, due to the extending of the facility service period and the requirement of the complicated construction project management for 'overhaul' and 'repowering' in the power plant maintenance phase, the needs for using BIM have been increased gradually. For using BIM based maintenance, it is needed to consider an information collecting methods and necessary to develop an appropriate breakdown structure to share information. Therefore, 'EBS' is produced by reviewing the previous research related to BIM and analyzing the repair activities in the maintenance phase. Proposed 'EBS' must be useful not only a judgment between capital expenditure versus revenue expenditure but also appropriate maintenance strategies development for property management.

  • Roof structure of the traditional buildings in the Northeast Asia region including Korea contains the most complicated and crucial components of the building and therefore the issues such as cost down, productivity and the attempt to combine the traditional building methodology with contemporary building technology turn out to be vital to the survival of the old yet disconnected traditional building industry. One of the distinctive modern building technologies is handling life-cycle building information by constructing virtual buildings using BIM, building information modeling tools. In this paper we follow a procedure to implement some of the design modules to be applied in BIM tools which are platforms for constructing virtual building models. We focus on Gong-po components namely the bracket-sets which are the essential part that connects the middle parts to the top parts (the roof structure) which are considered to be the most elaborate parts of the traditional buildings. The target building to work with in this paper is the Sung-Rye-Moon which has special cultural and social meanings nowadays and we tested our understanding and the design modules such as the bracket-sets by constructing a virtual building model of Sung-Rye-Moon.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for converting the existing 2D processes in the design and construction phase of civil engineering, to the future BIM-based processes. First, we compare and analyze the actual application processes of the outputs of the existing 2D method and the outputs of the 3D BIM method, for the whole process of BIM design of earthworks and road structures and integrated utilization of quantity, process(4D) and construction cost(5D), in view of life-cycle. The proposed method acquire the outputs of the design phase integrating IFC international common standard file information and CBS/OBS/WBS standard classification scheme information, and acquire the outputs of the construction stage by using an integrated utilization module for quantity, process(4D) and construction cost(5D). Ultimately, we intend to commercialize the step by step technologies for BIM design and construction in civil engineering by using the proposed method.

  • The construction projects are recently having changes in their magnitude and complexity. Therefore, the amount of information created and managed by participants over project phases is enormous and this may cause difficulties in consistent and integrated data management. Because of the change in construction projects, there is a need to apply more logical and systematic ways to deal integrated data management. For the solution to this, BIM(Building Information Modeling), a new paradigm for integrated management of the information over project life-cycle, has been seriously considered. Also, the Korean Public Procurement Service announced that project over 50 billion Korean Won should introduce BIM into procurement starting from 2012. However, the studies and development have lack on studies of applying BIM and managing the data made using BIM in pre-design and maintenance stage. In pre-design stage, the concept of schematic design model is made to support for making major decisions concerning the size, shape and cost of the project. To decide the cost for the building in this stage by making use of BIM, estimating the amount of building materials used for constructing should be preceded. In this study, the pre-design BIM is explained to gain a better understanding of its process, since this paper focused on space programming stage. Finally, the paper suggests the concept process of estimating the amount of materials in building interior finishing from selecting the type for the elements of each space made to support the client for making decisions in space programming stage based on pre-design BIM.
