This study investigated the utilization of detoxified Rhus verniciflua (RV) extract as a natural antioxidant to extend the shelf life of chicken breast meat during storage. Pre-heating at (35℃, 100℃, 120℃, and 140℃) was conducted on heartwood of RV prior to extraction to improve its antioxidant activity and remove the allergenic compound urushiol. The antioxidant activity was the highest when RV pre-heated at 120℃ with the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) scavenging activity observed at 62.29 EC50 ㎍/mL and 12.11 IC50 mg/mL, respectively. Pre-heating also significantly increased the total phenolic content (TPC), with the highest improvement was seen at 120℃, 100℃, and 140℃ respectively, wherein 35℃ shared no difference with the raw RV (RRV). Urushiol content was vanished following pre-heating at 120℃ and 140℃. With respect to these result, pre-heating treatment at 120℃ was applied before the extraction of the heartwood of RV. Prepared breast meat sample was dipped into distilled water as a negative control, 0.02% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) as positive control, and a solution containing detoxified RV extract (0.10%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 1.00%) at 4℃ for 60 min. Treatment group with 0.50% and 1.00% addition increased the redness and yellowness value on day 6 and day 3 of storage respectively (p < 0.05). The pH value of breast meat was also increased in treatment of 0.50% and 1.00% on day 0, but subsequently lower until end of storge day compared to control negative (p < 0.05). Furthermore, 0.50% treatment exhibited a higher antioxidant activity, stronger inhibition of the microbial growth evaluated by total viable count and maintaining a lower total volatile basic nitrogen among treatments (p < 0.05), unless for BHT and 1.00% treatment groups (p > 0.05). It indicates a similar efficacy of detoxified RV extract with that of positive control treated with BHT. The results of this study suggested that dipping chicken breast meat into a solution containing 0.50% of previously pre-heated RV heartwood at 120℃ could be a promising natural antioxidant for extending the shelf life, and at the same time improve its quality during storage.

Objective : Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) patients using antithrombotic agents (AT) at high risk for cardiovascular disease are increasing. The authors aimed to analyze the factors influencing outcome by targeting patients using AT and to establish a desirable treatment strategy. Methods : A retrospective analysis was performed on data from 462 patients who underwent burr hole trephination (BHT) surgery for CSDH at five hospitals from March 2010 to June 2021. Outcomes included incidence of postoperative acute bleeding, recurrence rate, and morbidity or mortality rate. Patients were divided into the following four groups based on their history of AT use : no AT. Only antiplatelet agents (AP), only anticoagulants (AC), both of AP and AC. In addition, a concurrent literature review was conducted alongside our cohort study. Results : Of 462 patients, 119 (119/462, 25.76%) were using AT. AP prescription did not significantly delay surgery (p=0.318), but AC prescription led to a significant increase in the time interval from admission to operation (p=0.048). After BHT, AP or AC intake significantly increased the period required for an in-dwelling drain (p=0.026 and p=0.037). The use of AC was significantly related to acute bleeding (p=0.044), while the use of AP was not (p=0.808). Use of AP or AC had no significant effect on CSDH recurrence (p=0.517 and p=1.000) or reoperation (p=0.924 and p=1.000). Morbidity was not statistically correlated with use of either AP or AC (p=0.795 and p=0.557, respectively), and there was no significant correlation with mortality for use of these medications (p=0.470 and p=1.000). Conclusion : Elderly CSDH patients may benefit from maintenance of AT therapy during BHT due to reduced thromboembolic risk. However, the use of AC necessitates individualized due to potential postoperative bleeding. Careful post-operative monitoring could mitigate prognosis and recurrence impacts.
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activity of the water extract from Coptis chinensis Franch. Coptis chinensis Franch. exhibited antioxidative activity at all concentration tested. The extract was as good as antioxidative action of the synthetic antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene and ascorbic acid; Also, the one was superior to that of natural antioxidant, $\alpha$ -tocopherol. With heavy metal ions (Fe3+, Zn2+) present, Coptis chinensis Franch. showed strong antioxidative effect.

Thirty plants were screened for their antioxidative activity. The extracts of Agastache rugosa, Schizonepeta tenuifolia and Lycopus lucidus had high free radical(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging activities. Methanol extract of Agastache rugosa was fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity in the DPPH test. The ethyl acetate fraction was applied to Sephadex LH-20 column, and the fractions showing antioxidative activity were collected and used for identification of the substance. The purified substance was applied to mass, IR, UV and NMR spectroscopy. The spectra of mass, IR, UV and NMR implied that the substance is a rosmarinic acids as a kind of phenolic compound. The rosmarinic acid has more antioxidative effect than those of BHT and ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ in the Rancimat test.

This paper deals with the antioxidative activities of some spices on the autoxidation of refined sardine oil. The various spices powders(120mesh) were added into the refined sardine oil at the level of $0.1\%$ (w/w), and then incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ Among spices tested, herb spices showed higher antioxidative activities than spicy and seed spices. Especially, the antioxidative activities of herb spices on peroxidation of refined sardine oil were most effective in rosemary and sage. Furthermore, the available antioxidative compounds of rosemary and sage were fractionated into petroleum ether-soluble and -insolubles. Petroleum ether-soluble fractions(PESF) obtained from rosemary and sage on the autoxidation of refined sardine oil had a great antioxidative activities. The yields of PESF obtained from rosemary and sage were $10.3\%\;and\;12.6\%$, respectively. The PESF of rosemary and sage showed higher antioxidative effects than butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT), and indicated predominant metal ion-scavenging effect in PESF-refined sardine oil systems.
Maple tree is a useful medical plant for obtaining bioactive materials such as pharmaceutics, cosmetics, food additive, etc., and there are 16 species of native maple trees in Korea. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant activity of sap and crude extracts of Acer mono Max, a representative maple species. The crude extracts were obtained by solvent extraction (water, ethanol, and ethyl acetate) from its branches (bark and xylem). The phenolic contents and radical scavenging capacities of the extracts and the sap were evaluated in terms of half maximal effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) and kinetics by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The ethanol extracts showed the highest extraction yield, phenolic contents and antioxidant activity, and bark extracts showed better antioxidant activity than xylem extracts. The antioxidant activity of the sap was very low, but the $EC_{50}$ of ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts ranged from 68 to $79{\mu}g/mL$, similar to that ($60{\mu}g/mL$) of the control, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The DPPH radical scavenging rate ($220{\sim}760{\mu}M/min$) and the second-order reaction rate constant ($6.48{\sim}7.04L/g{\cdot}min$) of these extracts were better than those of BHT ($55{\sim}370{\mu}M/min$ and $3.60L/g{\cdot}min$). These results suggest that A. mono Max. is one of the useful bioresources for obtaining antioxidant biologically active substances, and it is possible to obtain physiologically active substances from by-product of its pruning while minimizing the effect on the growth of the tree.
Hot water soluble extract from sporophyll of Undaria pinnatifida was examined for antioxidant activity using l,l-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and lipid peroxidation assay. The $IC_{50}$ value (7.6 mg/ml) of hot water extract from sporophyll of U. pinnatifida was more higher than ascorbic acid (0.025 mg/ml) and BHT (0.25 mg/ml). The hot water extract from sporoof U. pinnatifida was stable from pH 2 to pH 7 but decreased at alkali pH. The heat stability of hot water extract from sporophyll of U. pinnatifida was stable from $0^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. An effect on an antioxidant activity of hot water extract from sporophyll of U. pinnatifida was studied with various metal ions and EDTA. Antioxiactvity of hot water extract from sporophyll of U. pinnatifida was inhibited by EDTA but increased by adding $Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$, respectively.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the antioxidative activity of crackers made with a guava(Psidium guajava Linn.) leaf extract harvested in Korea. Guava leaf extraction using boiling water showed significantly higher antioxidative activities than extracting using 70% ethanol based on the higher total phenolic contents, FRAP, and ABTS assays(p<0.05). The crackers containing 1% guava leaf extract, and 0.075% BHT were stored at $63^{\circ}C$ for 7 days for the Schaal oven test, and the oxidative stability(AV, POV), antioxidative activity(DPPH, FRAP, ABTS assay), and sensory evaluation were compared. The crackers containing 1% guava leaf extract were found to have a higher oxidative stability than the control due to a lower acid value and peroxide value after 7 days of storage. The antioxidative activities of the crackers containing 1% guava leaf extract was the highest after 7 days as determined in the DPPH and ABTS assay, and was lower than crackers containing 0.075% BHT after 4 days as assessed by the FRAP assay. In the sensory evaluation, the crackers containing the 1% guava leaf extract had the highest scores in terms of taste, texture, and overall palatability than others at increasing storage time. As a result, the addition of 1% guava leaf extract harvested in Korea increased the antioxidative effect as well as the sensory acceptability of crackers.

This study was performed to investigate the antioxidative activity of soybean products extracts using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method for application of animal products. All three extracts (natto, soybean paste, soybean milk extract) were found to have an ability to donate hydrogen to DPPH. Especially, natto and soybean paste extract were more effective than that of soybean milk on the antioxidative activities. Natto and soybean paste extract were stronger than butylhydroxy toluene (BHT), butyl hydroxyl anisole (BHA) (5${\times}$10$^{-4}$ M) and ascorbic acid (5.7${\times}$10$^{-3}$ M) previously well known as antioxidants. These extracts also showed a synergistic effect. TBA values of natto (45.8%) and soybean paste extract (45.2%) were stronger than that of soybean milk extract (33.6%). These results suggest that soybean product extracts have antioxidative activities and synergistic effects.
In this study, the antioxidant and antimutagenic activities of Cuscutae semen ethanol extract were evaluated. Antioxidant activity was measured by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and the Ames test was employed to determine the inhibition effect on mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium TA100. The extract showed significant free radical-scavenging activity towards the DPPH radical, and at a concentration of 400 ppm, its free radical-scavenging activity was similar to that of BHT. The $IC_{50}$ value of the extract was 89 ppm, indicating good antioxidant capacity. Moreover, at 5 mg/mL, the extract presented inhibitions of approximately 98.0% and 49.2% on mutagenicity induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide and sodium azide, respectively. The total polyphenols and flavonoid contents of the extract were 20.1 mg/g and 1.9 mg/g, respectively. Therefore, this study indicates that the ethanolic extract of Cuscutae semen has excellent antioxidative and antimutagenic potential.
