Rheological, colloidal and micromeritical properties were followed to investigate aging mechanisms of hydrous aluminum oxide suspension using Zeta-meter systems, BET adsorption apparatus, Master sizer and electronmicroscope. The results indicate that hydrous aluminum oxide suspension revealed plastic flow with thixotropy. The viscosity, thixotropy and yield value were increased with increasing concentration. During aging process, the viscosity and thixotropic index were increased by an addition of glycerin, however, sorbitol stabilized aging process of the suspension being accompanied with growth of particle size and reduction in specific surface area, pore area and pore volume, and consistency. Diminution of adsorptive power of the particles was also protected by addition of sorbitol to hydrous aluminum oxide suspension. From these results, one of aging mechanism of hydrous aluminum oxide suspension assumed growth and/or crystallization of colloidal particles in aqueous suspension.
High surface carbon aerogels with hierarchical and tunable pore structure were prepared using ionic liquid as carbon precursor via a simple salt templating method. The as-prepared carbon aerogels were characterized by nitrogen sorption measurement and scanning electron microscopy. Through instant visual observation experiments, it was found that salt eutectics not only serve as solvents, porogens, and templates, but also play an important role of foaming agents in the preparation of carbon aerogels. When the pyrolyzing temperature rises from 800 to $1000^{\circ}C$, the higher temperature deepens the carbonization reaction further to form a nanoporous interconnected fractal structure and increase the contribution of super-micropores and small mesopores and improve the specific surface area and pore volume, while having few effects on the macropores. As the mass ratio of ionic liquid to salt eutectics drops from 55% to 15%, that is, the content of salt eutectics increases, the salt eutectics gradually aggregate from ion pairs, to clusters with minimal free energy, and finally to a continuous salt phase, leading to the formation of micropores, uniform mesopores, and macropores, respectively; these processes cause BET specific surface area initially to increase but subsequently to decrease. With the mass ratio of ionic liquids to salts at 35% and carbonization temperature at $900^{\circ}C$, the specific surface area of the resultant carbon aerogels reached $2309m^2g^{-1}$. By controlling the carbonization temperature and mass ratio of the raw materials, the hierarchically porous architecture of carbon aerogels can be tuned; this advantage will promote their use in the fields of electrodes and adsorption.
This paper describes the adsorption/desorpton efficiency of a modified activated carbon by irradiated microwave to treat toluene. By employing microwave energy, the regeneration time was considerably shortened compared with conventional thermal heating regeneration. New adsorbent called ACB (Activated Carbon-Bentonite) was prepared from powder activated carbon with mixing bentonite as a binder. Specific surface area, average pore size and total pore volume of ACB were calculated from the nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm. The surface of ACB was characterized with scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results showed that the specific surface area, total pore volume, average pore size of ABC was not influenced by regenerating cycle with microwave irradiation. Toluene was adsorbed onto ACB which desorbed by MW irradiation. Absorption capacity of ACB was 0.117 $g_{toluene}/g_{ACB}$. Desorption efficiency of toluene increased as higher microwave output was applied.
Short pitch fibers were prepared from petroleum based isotropic precursor pitch by melt-blown technology. The pitch fibers were stabilized in oxidizing condition, followed by steam activations at various conditions. The fiber surface and pore structures of the activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were respectively characterized by using SEM and applying BET theory from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. The weight loss of the oxidized fiber was proportional to activation temperature and activation time, independently. The adsorption isotherms of the nitrogen on the ACFs were constructed and analyzed to be as Type I consisting of micropores mainly. The specific surface area of the ACFs proportionally increased with the weight loss at a given activation temperature. The specific surface area was ranged 850~1900 $m^2/g$ with pores of narrow distribution in sizes. The average pore size was ranged 5.8~14.1 ${\AA}$ with the larger value from the more severe activation condition.

In order to lower porosity of the porous silica, titanium alkoxide solution was filled in the pore of silica in the heating-vacuum condition. The specific surface area of modified samples was decreased effectively from 900 m$^2$/g to 100 m$^2$/g. (The aggregation phenomena in modified samples were improved fairly.) Samples were heated at 600 , and then the titanium alkoxide in the pore was decomposed completely to titanium oxide from TGA-DTA measurement. From SEM result, it was evident that titanium oxide did not coat the surface of the silica. The modified samples were analyzed using SEM, DTA-TGA, BET, and UV-visible spectrometer.

This study examined the catalytic property of Ni-catalyst used in the gas purifying process to manufacture inert gases of N2 and Ar with high-purity over 9N for semiconductor industrial applications. Two types of Ni-catalysts with a cylindrical shape (C1) and churros shape structure (C2) were compared for the assessment. Optical microscopy and FESEM were used to analyze the shape and microstructure of the Ni-catalyst. EDS, XRD, and micro-Raman characterization were performed to examine the composition and properties. BET and Pulse Titration analyses were conducted to check the surface area and catalytic property of the Ni-catalyst. From the composition analysis results, C1 contained a relatively large amount of graphite as an impurity, and C2 contained higher Ni contents than C1. From specific surface area analysis, the specific surface area of C2 was approximately 1.69 times larger than that of C1. From catalytic property analysis, outstanding performance in O2 and CO impurity removal was observed at room temperature. Therefore, C2, having low-impurity and large specific surface area, is a suitable catalyst for the high-purity inert gas process in the semiconductor industry because of its outstanding performance in O2 and CO impurity removal at room temperature.
Coal tar pitch was chemically modified with 10 wt% benzoquinone (BQ) to raise the softening point of isotropic pitch precursor and the precursor was melt-spun into pitch fibers, stabilized, carbonized and activated with steam at $900^{\circ}C$. The weight loss of carbon fiber-benzoquinone (CF-BQ) increased with the increase of activation time like other fibers, but was lower than those of Kureha fiber at the same activation time in spite of larger geometric surface area. Those adsorption isotherms fitted into 'Type I' according to Brunauer, Deming, Deming and Teller classification. However, there was very thin low-pressure hysteresis that lower closure points of the hysteresis are about 0.42-0.45. From the pore size distribution curves, there might be some micropores having narrow-necked bottle; a series of interconnected pore is more likely than discrete bottles. FT-IR studies showed that the functional groups such as carboxyl, quinone, and phenol were introduced to ACFs-BQ surface after steam activation. Methylene blue decolorization and iodine adsorption capacity of ACF-BQ increased linearly with the increase of specific surface area and was larger than that of ACF-Kureha at the same specific surface area.
In this study activated carbon fibers were prepared from PAN-based carbon fibers by physical activation with steam or carbon dioxide. The variations in specific surface area amount of iodine adsorption and pore size distribution of the activated carbon fibers after the activation process were discussed. in steam activation BET surface area of about 1019 m2/g was obtained after 77% burn-off while carbn dioxide activation produced ACF with 694m2/g of BET surface area after 52% burn-off. However carbon dioxide activation produced at a similar degree of activation higher micropore volume(0.37 cc/g) and amount of iodine adsorption (1589mg/g) than steam activation. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms for (PAN based activated carbon fibers that prepared by physical activation were of type I in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller classification
lanthanum chromite(LaCrO3) powder was synthesized by the combustion of a solution of metal nitrates La(NO3).6H2O and Cr(NO3)3.9H2O and urea. The pH of solution affected a yield of the combustion products but did not influence the morphology of the products. When the pH of the solution was in the range of 0.7-4, the yield of the combustion products was more than 90% The morphology of the combustion products was af-fected by heating methods for the solution. The hot-plate induced heating of the solution yielded powders hav-ing two-dimensionally interconnected agglomerates whereas microwave-induced heating produced a fine and non-agglomerated powders. The specific surface area(BET) of the combustion products using microwave-in-non-agglomerated powders. The specific surface area(BET) of the combustion products using microwave-in-duced heating method were larger(25~32m2/g) than that of hot plate heating method(10-14m2/g)
In this work, the adsorption characteristics and mechanical interfacial properties of treated silicas by silane coupling agents, such as, ${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (MPS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane (GPS), and ${\gamma}$-mercapto propyl trimethoxy silane (MCPS), were investigated. The equilibrium spreading pressure ($pi_e$), surface free energy ($gamma_s$ s/), and specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) were studied by the BET method with $N_2$/77 K adsorption. The developments of nonpolar functional groups of the silica surfaces treated by silane coupling agents led to the increase in the $S_{BET}$, $pi_e$, and $gamma_s$, resulting in the improved tearing energy ($G_{mc}$)of the silica/rubber composites. The composites treated by MPS showed the superior mechanical interfacial properties in these systems. These results explained by changing of crystalline size, dispersion, agglomerate, and surface functional group of silica/rubber composites.
