The purpose of this study was to compare mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA; Dentsply, Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK, USA), which is widely used as root-end filling material, with DiaRoot BioAggregate (DB; Innovative BioCaramix Inc, Vancouver, BC, Canada), newly developed product, by using MG63 osteoblast-like cells. MTA, DB, and Intermediate Restorative Material (IRM; Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE, USA) were used for root-end filling material while tissue culture plastic was used for control group. Each material was mixed and, the mixtures were left to set for 24 hours. MG63 cells were seeded to each group and then they were cultured for attachment for 4 hours. Following the attachment of cells to the root-end filling material, early cellular response was observed. After another 12 hours'culture, the level of attachment between cells and material was observed and in order to identify the effect of each material to bone formation, transforming growth factor beta1 ($TGF{\beta}1$) and osteocalin (OC) were estimated by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the amount of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was also measured. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. As a result, only at OC and the number of cells which were attached to materials, there was no statistical difference between MTA and DB. At other items, there was statistically significant difference in all groups. Although DB has not shown exactly the same cellular response like that of MTA, the number of attached cells shows that biocompatibility of the material and OC indicates bone formation rate. Therefore, if DB is used for root end filling material, it is expected to lead to similar results to MTA.
Groundwater in small islands is used as main water resource but the overuse of groundwater may cause seawater intrusion and temperature decrease in geothermal wells. This study aimed to characterize the hydrogeology of Maeum-ri area in Seokmo Island of Ganghwagun using long-term monitoring at groundwater wells and geothermal wells. In the monitoring period seasonal water level change, consistent drop or increase of water levels are not detected. The groundwater temperature about 10m below ground surface shows year cycle variation having two to five months difference with ambient temperature cycle. The storativity was calculated by tidal method. The storativity estimated by adapting tidal efficiency factor showed some larger values than that by using tidal time lag. The result suggested that the tidal method assuming several assumptions on aquifer condition may produce broad ranges but the calculated ranges at this application are reasonable. The similar shape of groundwater level change and tidal effects was observed at several wells clustered east-south-east direction which may implicate the distribution of vertical fracture system strongly related with groundwater flow channels. The applied methodology and study results will bc valuable to evaluate optimal pumping rate for the preservation of groundwater resources, and to manage geothermal development.
The residence space has been in the trend of being expanded with the J'l'cent economic growth Therefore PAC may be said to have [wen from business use to home US(: the progressed living standard as the goods ior Uw "ummel' S('dSOn rest'ntly though sold in Uw fast for mainly buslTw"s use. PAC has been in the demand day ;lner day and in the tn'nd on the bc,ing the necessJty of the n'sent wf',lther warming phenomenon This study is the case study nf the products development and design process of PAC which has bpcn llrivcn and developed by Gold Star Co. ,Ltd. Which .is the firm for home electric appliances representing Korea. This studies for the development and the design of the products by the firm thus emphasizing the visulizing it based on this study. For example as they being the goods for the summer season I have tried to know the physical quakity and the characters of koreans by the weather conditions and estimated the demand by setting up the target customers of the PAC as the customers' environment. And I analyzed the acts in the living room in the apartments as the living envinorment which has the direct relation with PAC and also became a help to the moulding work of PAC by analyzing the complete interior image in the living room. In the practical moulding work the Design concept was classified into the envinorment of customer, living and products to drive as the below. Firstly - New shape (Round slim) has been realized which leads the minimizing the moulding space and visul sense of opening as its being spacious. The 2nd - the high class sense of the products which are harmonious with the atmosphere of the living room by making it interiorized has been visible. The 3rd - The shape stimulating the sensitivity of the users and surface treatment are emphasized by making it be touched. The 4th - During inviting use of technology image which appears in the electronics products are attemptedby making it be high quality.king it be high quality.
This study was intended to validate and develop the driving stress coping behavior scale. In a preliminary investigation, literature studies on the driving stress and open questionnaire were administered and examined in four regions in Korea. As a result, 64 items driving stress questionnaire were developed. In the study, this Driving Stress Coping Behavior Scale(DS-CBS) was examined to 372 drivers located seven regions in Korea. The factors analysis revealed 2 meaningful factors[(Good Coping: GC), (Bad Coping: BC) with 24 items. When internal consistency for each 2 factor was calculated, all sub-scale revealed a satisfactory level of Cronbach's α. Also, correlations with Driver Coping Questionnaire(DCQ) and risk driving behaviors(speed driving, drunken driving, traffic violation, offence accident, defence accident) supported consistently validity of the Driving Stress Coping Behavior Scale(DS-CBS). Also, We investigated the influences of 'Good Coping', 'Bad Coping' consisting of driving stress coping behavior, on traffic accidents risk. As a result, 'Good Coping' and 'Bad Coping' influenced traffic accidents risk. 'Good Coping' had decreased effects, the other side 'Bad Coping' had increased effects on traffic accidents risk(TARI).
Field resistance is defined as the resistance that allows effective control of a parasite under natural field condition and is durable when exposed to new races of that parasite. To identify the genes for field resistance to rice blast, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) conferring the resistance for races and blast nursery screening in japonica rice cultivars were detected and mapped using SSR markers. QTL analysis was carried out in 190 RILs population from the cross between Suweon365 (moderately resistant) and Chucheong (highly susceptible). Twelve QTLs against nine blast races inoculated were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 11 and 12. They explained from 5.1% to 34.9% of total phenotypic variation. Eight QTLs against blast nursery screening in four regions for three years were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 11 and 12. The phenotypic variation explained by each QTL ranged from 4.3% to 37.7%. Three chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) of $BC_2F_6$ by backcross method were developed to transfer the QTLs into the susceptible cultivar Chucheong as a recurrent parent. A CSSL4-1 containing two QTLs qLB6.2 and qLB7 against blast races showed to the reaction of 6 to 7 at blast nursery in two regions for two years. The CSSL4-2 and CSSL93 containing QTLs, qLB11.2 and qLB12.1 of the resistance against leaf blast in blast nursery screening, respectively, had enhanced the resistance for blast nursery screening across two regions and in two years.
'Manbaek' is a bacterial blight resistant mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality. 'Manbeak' was derived from anther culture using the backcross combination, $Hopum^*2/SR30075$. 'Hopum' is a mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality and 'SR30075' is a pyramid line carrying three bacterial blight resistance genes. 'Manbaek' was selected through the pedigree method, yield trials, and local adaptability tests. 'Manbeak' carrying two bacterial blight resistance gene Xa3 and xa5 showed high-level and broad-spectrum resistance against bacterial blight. 'Manbaek' was resistant to K3a, mostly virulent race in Korea, and exhibited resistance reaction against 16 Korean bacterial blight isolates. 'Manbaek' was a mid-late maturing rice. The heading date of 'Manbaek' was August 19th, which was 5 days later than that of 'Nampyeong'. Manbaek' was a lodging-tolerant rice with short culm and dark green leaf. Due to the low viviparous germination, 'Manbaek' could be a useful material to prevent pre-harvest sprouting. 'Mabeak' was resistant to bacterial blight and rice stripe virus, but susceptible to other virus diseases and insect pests. The yield of 'Manbaek' was similar to 'Nampyeong'. 'Manbaek' showed excellent grain appearance and good tastes of cooked rice, so that it could contribute to improving the quality of bacterial blight resistant cultivars. 'Manbaek', bacterial blight resistant cultivar with high grain quality, is suitable for the cultivation at bacterial blight prone area and has been utilized in the breeding programs for enhancing the resistance against bacterial blight (Registration No. 6069).
The water extract of Omija-tang(OMJT) has been traditionally used for treatment of ischemic heart and brain damage in oriental medicine. However, little is known about the mechanism by which the water extract of OMJT protects cells from such damage. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the protective mechanisms of OMJT on $H_2O_2$-induced toxicity in H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells. Treatment of $H_2O_2$ markedly induced death of H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells in a dose-dependent manner. The characteristics of $H_2O_2$-induced death of H9c2 showed apparent apoptotic features, such as DNA fragmentation. However, OMJT significantly reduced both $H_2O_2$-induced cell death and chromatin fragmentation. The decrease of Bcl-XL expression by $H_2O_2$ was inhibited by OMJT. In addition, the increase of Bcl-XS and Bax expression were also inhibited by OMJT. In particular, Fas expression, which is generally recognized as cell death inducing signal by Fas/FasL interaction, was markedly increased by $H_2O_2$ in a time-dependent manner, whereas this increase was completely prevented by OMJT. The combined treatment of OMJT and $H_2O_2$ in H9c2 cells also reduced activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 like protease. Taken together, this study indicates that the protective effects of the water extract of OMJT against oxidative damage may be mediated by the modulation of BcI-XL/S and Bax expression by way of the regulation of mitochondrial membrane potential and caspase cascades.
These experiments were conducted to study the relationship among agronomic traits, varietal variation of grain-filling periods and the effect of environmental conditions on the grain-filling in the ten selected barley cultivars. The varietal variation of grain-filling periods was of significance: Tokak had the similar increment in both greenhouse and field plot, Suweon two row was believed to be an cultivar with short grainfilling period. Cultivars with higher grain-filling rates tended to. have significantly lower ash content. Ash content of a cultivar tended to be lower when grown under favorable condition. At maturity, the time of development of yellow or dark pigment at the crease base could be a possible criterion for physiological maturity determination. However, this requires further study. Average grain-filling period in the different conditions was constant, but varietal differences were 9 days in the greenhouse and 5 days in the field. The grain moisture content was not constant in accordance to both cultivars and growing conditions. Average accelerated days for heading and ripening periods were very constant in comparision with field and vinyl mulching suggests that the selected materials will be useful for genetic study on grain-filling periods. The cultivars and grown conditions with higher accumulated temperature per $100^{\circ}C$ from early grain-filling had larger grain-filling rates and heavier 1000 grain weight. This study showed that if the variation among and within cultivars is to be minimized, the greenhouse and vinyl mulching plots could be useful for genetic study on grain-filling periods in $BC_1$ and $F_2$ segregation.
Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of of intravenous iron sucrose ($Venoferrum^{(R)}$) for treating the perioperative anemic gastrectomy patients. Materials and Methods: From September 2006 to February 2007 at Seoul National University Hospital, the gastrectomy patients who displayed perioperative anemia (7.0 g/dl $\leq$ hemoglobin levels (Hb) < 11.0 g/dl) and who were admitted or visited the outpatient clinic of the Department of surgery, were divided into two groups. The preoperative (${\leq}\;2{\sim}3$ weeks before gastrectomy) or postoperative ($\geq$ 1 month after gastrectomy) patients without evidence of acute bleeding were included into Group 1. The immediate postoperative (< 1 month after gastrectomy) patients with stable vital signs were included into Group 2. The age, gender, diagnosis, Hb, hematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum ferritin (SF), total iron binding capacity (TIBC), serum iron and reticulocyte counts (RC) were evaluated before and after intravenous iron sucrose administration. The adverse effects of drugs were investigated. Results: The number of patients of group 1 and group 2 was 79 and 46, respectively. In group 1, there was a statistically significant difference in the Hb, Hct, MCV, SF, RC and TIBC with each mean change of 1.3 g/dl, 4.1%, 3.1ft, 195 ng/ml, 0.2% and -86.4 ug/dl, respectively. In group 2, there was a statistically significant difference in the Hb, Hct, MCV, SF and RC with each mean change of 1.8 g/dl, 6.1%, 3.4fl, 260 ng/ml and 0.3%, respectively. Two patients (1.6%) suffered local thrombophlebitis as an adverse effect. Conclusion: Intravenous iron sucrose for the perioperative anemia of gastrectomy patients was efficacious in the short period without significant adverse effects.
In order to substitute soybean meal for fish meal, the protein requirement of fleshy shrimp was examined and then the effect of soybean meal supplemented with cuttlefish oil was studied. Different contents of protein in prepared diet had significant effects on the survival rate and growth of fleshy shrimp (P<0.05). With regard to protein content ranging from $25\%\;to\;50\%,\;40\%$ protein showed the best survival rate and fastest growth. The percent survival rates of fleshy shrimp fed diets containing protein levels of 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and $50(\%)$ were $74.0^d,\; 82.0^{cd},\;91.0^b,\;97.0^a,\;93.0^{ab},\;and\;88.0^{bc}\%(P< 0.05).$ The optimum protein requirements for postlarvae (13-84 mg) and juvenile (0.9-8.1g) were calculated by the broken line method as $40.4\%\;and\;39.9\%$. When soybean meal was substituted $(up\;to\;76\%)$ for fish meal in the prepared diet, the performance' gradually suffered with the increase of soybean meal content, but when cuttlefish oil was added to soybean meal, survival rates were improved with $2.5\%$ cuttlefish oil supplement.
