  • Four Tertiary basins are distributed on the eastern coast of the southern Korean Peninsula, that is, Bugpyeong, Yeonghae, Pohang and Yangnam basins from north to south. The Yangnam and Pohang basins are the largest ones and have been well studied on their stratigraphies, paleoenvironments and geologic ages, and their tectonic history is representative on the tectogenesis of the Tertiary basins of the southern Korean Peninsula. The geologic events occurred in the Yangnam and Pohang basins from the Early-Middle Eocene through the Middle Miocene suggest that the Yangnam and Pohang basins resulted from the volcanism and rifting caused by the uprising magma, that is, by the diapiric tectogenesis.

  • In this study Window interface to Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was applied to the upstream of Namgang watershed to estimate its applicability for estimating Delivery Ratio (DR) of water pollutants for Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). BASINS/HSPF which is selected in this study, is found to be appropriate for simulation of daily flow and water quality in target basins. DR was estimated utilizing discharge loads of unobserved sub-basin and delivery load of unobserved locations obtained not by actual evaluation but by simulation through validation and verification. Annual average DR of BOD, TN and TP were 0.97 ~ 1.50, 2.23 ~ 3.21, and 0.81 ~ 1.09 respectively. Net DR of dependent basins excluding influence of upstream basin was 1.50 ~ 1.70, 0.55 ~ 0.69, and 0.24 ~ 0.31, all of which are lower than those of independent basins area. Utilizing the model selected by this research, DR and Net DR of unobserved basins will be estimated, which will help determine priorities in management of basin areas.

  • After the legal foundation for the Total Load Control System (TLCS) process is embedded in integrated water management counterplan for 4 major river basins (1998), Kyunggido Kwangju City prepared the implementation plan of TLCS at first time. There is little difference between TLCS and TMDL(Total Daily Maxium Loading; U.S.A). TMDL is applied only when mandatory effluent limitations are not stringent enough to attain any water quality standard. But object of TLCS not only attain water quality standard at distributed watershed but also consider development of area at non-distributed watershed. For applying of systematic and consistent TLCS, we need to establish a system integrated watershed and point source, non-point source and assessed massive database easily. Now we are study on applicable possibility of BASINS on Korea, we think that BASINS's tool and many models are more easily apply to TLCS, so we recommend TLCS will be applied using BASINS.

  • Active young back-arc basin such as Mariana, Havre, Lau, Manus, East Scotia basins have asymmetric topography of two types in respect to the spreading axis. The arc-trench wing of Mariana Trough, Lau basin and Havre Trough are shallower toward the active arc, whereas those Manus and East Scotia basins are nearly symmetric to the opposite wings. The other asymmetry which shows the spreading axis deviated from the geographic axis toward the active arc is observed in each basin. Active young back-arc basins show a large variety of asymmetry rates ranging from the lowest East Scotia Basin to the highest Mariana Trough. The asymmetric topography of these young back-arc basins seems to be caused by the rollback rate of downgoing slab under the basin. As the rollback rate increases, the asymmetry rate systematically decreases.

  • HEC-HMS model should be calibrated to be applied to these basins in Gangwon-do unlike the general basins. In the study, it is investigated whether the HEC-HMS model may be applied or not to Naerinchon basin where is the typical basin of Gangwon-do Additionally, the straightforword module of HEC-HMS for simulating the hydrologic characteristic of Gangwon-do basins well will be suggested by comparison of the numerical results with the observed data. The hydrologic results estimated by several modules such as Clark, SCS and Snyder methods in HEC-HMS model have been compared with the observed data for 1999~2000 storm events. It is concluded that Clark method are relatively applicable to the basins in Gangwon-do rather than the others methods. The parametric studies for HEC-HMS model should be studied further in order to apply to Gangwon-do basins more accurately.

  • The soil erosion processes have estimated using spatial distribution of 137Cs radionuclide in Granite and Sedimentary Hillslopes in South Korea. The local variability of 137Cs inventory indicates that was related positively to organic matter content, clay content and water content and negatively to hydraulic permeability and slope gradient for bulk samples in different landforms within Granite and Sedimentary rock basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventory shows that most of 137Cs concentration and organic matter were accumulated between 0 and 2cms and gradually decrease with soil depth in incremental samples in both basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventories shows that 137Csinventories increase as we go to toward downslope in both basins. Finally, the soil loss values indicate that hillslope erosion processes are more intensive in Granite rock basin than those in Sedimentary rock basin.

  • Monitoring the land cover changes in Nakdong River Basins using the multi-temporal remote sensing datasets is necessary for preserving properties in the river basins and monitoring the environmental changes in the river basins after the 4 major river restoration project. This research aims to monitor the land cover changes using the multi-temporal Landsat imageries and the airborne topographic LiDAR data. Firstly, the river basin boundaries are determined by using the LiDAR data, and the multiple river basin imageries are generated from the multi-temporal Landsat imageries by using the river basin boundaries. Next the classification method is employed to identify the multiple land covers in the generated river basin imageries. Finally, monitoring the land cover changes is implemented by comparing the differences of the same clusters in the multi-temporal river basin imageries.

  • Parameters for the Synthetic Unit Hydrograph(SUH) using SCS and v methods(including modified type) are derived by regression analysis of the Representative Unit Hydrograph(RUH) of 22 basins in Korea. These derived SUHs were compared with the RUHs and those of Snyder and HYMO given by the Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) for selected 4 basins. In SCS method, when correlated with the lag time of SUHs based on the whole basin rather than on the riverwise basins the peak discharge(excluding Bocheng stream) is close to that of RUH. BUt the peak time given by riverwise basins agrees closer to the RUH than by the whole basins. The modified Nakayasu type SUH(excluding Wi stream) associated with lag time based on riverwise basins gives better agreements to the RUH than that of Nakayasu method. And the modified Nakayasu type SUH gives much better agreement to the RUH than that of Nakayasu method for the case of both whole and riverwise basins.

  • A mathematical modeling program called Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was applied to Hwaseong watershed. It was run under BASINS (Better Assessment Science for Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources) program, and the model was validated using monitoring data of $2002{\sim}2005$. The model efficiency of runoff ranged from good to fair in comparison between simulated and observed data, while it was from very good to poor in the water quality parameters. But its reliability and performance were within the expectation considering complexity of the watershed and pollutant sources. The nonpoint source (NPS) loading for T-N and T-P during the monsoon rainy season (June to September) was about 80% of total NPS loading, and runoff volume was also in a similar range. However, NPS loading for BOD ($55{\sim}60%$) didn't depend on rainfall because BOD was mostly discharged from point source (more than 70%). And water quality was not necessarily high during the rainy season, and showed a decreasing trend with increasing water flow. BASINS/HSPF was applied to the Hwaseong watershed successfully without difficulty, and it was found that the model could be used conveniently to assess watershed characteristics and to estimate pollutant loading including point and nonpoint sources in watershed scale.

  • Large scale projects of sea-land reclamation have been practiced mainly to enlarge farmland in Korea. Most projects produced estuarine reservoir with dike construction, which might result in water quality problems due to block of natural flowing of stream water to the sea. Applicability of a widely accepted watershed-based water quality assessment tool (BASINS) and its associated watershed model was evaluated on the Hwaong watershed in Korea. BASINS was found to be a convenient and powerful tool for assessment of watershed characteristics, and provided various tools to delineate the watershed into land segments and river reaches, reclassify land use, and parameterize for HSPF simulation. WASP5 is a general purpose modeling system for assessing the fate and transport of conventional and toxic pollutants in surface water bodies. This study involved selection and linkage of available models to be used as a tool in evaluating the effects of BMPs for control on reservoir water quality. Overall,.Linkage of BASINS/HSPF and WASP5 was applicable and found to be a powerful tool in pollutant loading estimation from the watershed and reservoir, and its use is recommended.
