  • BACnet is an international standard communication protocol especially designed for building automation and control systems. BACnet uses the Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP) protocol as one of its field-level networks. A BACnet MS/TP field controller prototype and MS/TP network monitoring system are developed in this study. This report introduces the design and implementation methodology of a BACnet MS/TP field controller hardware, firmware and protocol stack. • BACnet is a standard data communication protocol especially designed for building automation and control networks. BACnet uses the Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP) protocol as one of its field-level networks. In this study, the performance of the BACnet MS/TP protocol is evaluated using an experimental model. The network performance is investigated and evaluated in terms of token rotation time and round trip time. The experimental results show that the performance of the MS/TP network is heavily influenced by the network traffic load, the assignment of MS/TP node address and the network configuration parameter called $N_{max_info-frames}$. Based on the experimental results, simple practical designing guidelines for BACnet MS/TP network systems are also proposed.

  • Digital communication networks have become a core technology in advanced building automation systems. BACnet(Building Automation and Control networks) is a standard data communication protocol designed specifically for building automation and control systems. BACnet adopts Master-Slave/Token-Passing(MS/TP) protocol as one of its field level networks. In this study, we introduce a method of implementing a bandwidth allocation scheme in the MS/TP protocol. The bandwidth allocation scheme improves the capability of real-time communication of the original MS/TP protocol. The bandwidth allocation scheme introduced in this paper can be easily implemented in the existing MS/TP protocol with a slight modification. In this study, we actually developed the hardware and firmware of the modified MS/TP communication module in which the bandwidth allocation scheme is implemented. Using the modified MS/TP communication module, we developed an experimental model in order to examine the validity of the bandwidth allocation scheme in the MS/TP protocol. Experimental results show that the modified MS/TP protocol satisfies the requirements of real time communication for periodic and urgent messages of BACnet communication services.

  • BACnet is a standard data communication protocol for building automation and control systems. MS/TP is most widely used LAN protocol for data communication among field devices in the BACnet-based building automation. In this study, the performance of MS/TP protocol is investigated using a simulation model. This study evaluates the delay characteristics of MS/TP being used to deliver a BACnet application service. Analysis of the simulation results was used to identify the network parameters that influence the performance of BACnet application service and to develop recommendatioins that should be considered when designing and operating BACnet systems.

  • In network-based control system, measurement and control information is delivered by the network messages. Therefore, the performance of control system is directly affected by the performance of network system. System engineers need to evaluate the performance of network system to maintain the entire system in stable condition. BACnet is an international standard data communication protocol especially designed for building automation and control systems. In this study, experimental performance evaluation methodologies of BACnet MS/TP protocol and their practical evaluation results are presented.

  • The objective of this paper is to propose a reference model of a fire detection and monitoring system using MS/TP protocol. The reference model is designed to satisfy the requirements of response time and flexibility. The reference model is operated on the basis of BACnet, a standard communication protocol for building automation systems. Validity of the reference model was examined using a simulation model. This study also evaluated the performance of the BACnet-based fire detection and monitoring system in terms of network-induced delay. Simulation results show that the reference model satisfies the requirements of the fire detection and monitoring system.
