  • This study investigate the effects of starter cultures on the color stability of Chinese-style sausage. The samples were inoculated with $10^7cfu\;g^{-1}$ meat of either Staphylococcus carnosus or Staphylococcus xylosus. After mixing, curing at either $4^{\circ}C$ or $20^{\circ}C$ for 20 h and then drying at $50^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, the samples were then either vacuum packed or hung at $4^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ (85% R. H.). The pH, nitrite content, nitrosyl pigment content, metmyoglobin and L-, a-, b- values were measured. The pH value still remained above 6.0 during storage. Nitrite residue of all samples decreased after storage at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The samples inoculated with S. carnosus and S. xylosus had higher nitrite content (20.9-34.7 ppm) than the control (p<0.05). Samples inoculated with S. carnosus and S. xylosus had higher nitrosyl pigment content and lower metmyoglobin content than those of the control. The L- and b- values of all samples decreased but the a- values increased with storage time. The result suggested that S. carnosus and S. xylosus starter cultures be used to improve color stability of Chinese-style sausage.

  • Pexa-Vec (JX-594) is a specific cancer-targeted oncolytic and immunotherapeutic vaccinia virus. The purpose of this study was to develop methods to maximize the stability of Pexa-Vec. In short-term instability testing, viral activity was rapidly decreased both at 4℃ and at room temperature (RT), but it was completely restored after sonication followed by vortex. Long-term stability testing of Pexa-Vec in the following liquid formulations was performed: (A) 30 mM Tris/pH 7.6, (B) 30 mM Tris/pH 8.6, (C) 30 mM Tris/pH 7.6, 150 mM NaCl, 15% sucrose, (D) 30 mM Tris/pH 7.6, 15% sucrose, and (E) 30 mM Tris/pH 8.6, 15% sucrose. Viral activity decreased less than 2 log10 at 4℃, and RT was observed in 3 days in B, while viral activity was not decreased even after 4–8 weeks at 4℃ and at 1 week in RT in A, suggesting that neutral pH may be essential to maintain virus stability. The addition of 15% sucrose into A (D) significantly increased viral stability at −20℃, 4℃, or RT, and it was also observed at pH 8.6 (E). The addition of 150 mM NaCl into D (C) significantly increased viral stability in addition to the sucrose effect at 4℃ or RT. Accordingly, the viral activity in formulation C was maintained for 1.5 years at 4℃, and for 1-2 weeks in RT. In conclusion, we propose that formulation C can provide the most adequate condition for the proper storage of vaccinia oncolytic virus.

  • Numerical simulations of freely propagating flames burning stoichiometric C $H_4$/CHC1$_3$/ $O_2$/$N_2$ mixtures are performed at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of the $O_2$ enrichment level and the CHC1$_3$/C $H_4$ molar ratio. A chemical kinetic mechanism is developed, which involves 69 gas-phase species and 379 forward and 364 backward reactions. The calculated flame speeds are compared with the experiments for the flames established at several CHC1$_3$/C $H_4$ molar ratio (R<1), the results of which is in excellent agreement. As a results of the increased $O_2$ enrichment level from 0.21 to 1, the flame speed and the temperature in the burned gas are increased. At high CHC1$_3$/C $H_4$ molar ratio two peak values appear on the $O_2$ consumption rate, which are affected by CC1$_2$$O_2$$_{-}$>C1O+CC1O and H+ $O_2$$_{-}$>O+OH.+OH.

  • New electron deficient acceptor-acceptor-acceptor type of monomer unit composed of weak electron accepting benzimidazole and relatively strong electron accepting benzothiadiazole derivatives namely 4,7-bis(6-bromo-1-(2-ethylhexyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BBB) was synthesized. The Stille polycondensation of the newly synthesized BBB monomer with electron donating 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) afforded donor-acceptor-acceptor-acceptor type of polymer namely 2,6-(4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7-bis(1-(2-ethylhexyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (PBDTBBB). The opto-electrical studies revealed that the absorption band of PBDTBBB appeared in the range of 300 nm-525 nm and its highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels were positioned at -5.18 eV and -2.84 eV, respectively. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the polymer solar cell (PSC) prepared from PBDTBBB:PC71BM (1:2 wt %) blend was 1.90%.

  • The author obtained the oblique lateral trans cranial radiograms from 376 patients (114 of male, and 262 of female) with temporomandibular joint arthrosis. After tracing each film, the author analyzed the dimensional changes of the condylar heads with pain, clicking, mouth opening limitation, and masticatory difficulty respectively, which were the chief complaints of the TMJ arthrosis and compared these data with control group. The results were as follows; 1. There was a great predilection for occurrence of the TMJ arthrosis in female (262 cases) over male (114 cases). But there was no significant difference in ratio between the sexes on each symptom. In male, 60 patients (52.6%) had pain, 28 patients (24.6%) had clicking, 21 patients (18.4%) had mouth opening limitation, and 5 patients (4.4%) had masticatory difficulty. In female, 148 parients (56.5%) had pain, 57 patients (21.8%) had clicking, 47 patients (17.9%) had mouth opening limitation, and 10 patients (3.8%) had masticatory difficulty. 2. Examined controlled group, the author analyzed the dimension of W-W', 0-H, 0-A, 0-B on the right side first, and left side second. In male, the dimension of W-W' was 14.52㎜, 14.13㎜; 0-H was 13.92㎜, 13. 71㎜' 0-A was 8.91㎜, 9.0㎜ and 0-B was 8.67㎜, 8.78㎜.
