  • Systemic fungicides viz., Bavistin and Beyleton are reported to have curative effect against the infection of Beauveria bassiana in silkworm Bombyx mori L. To understand the influence of the systemic fungicides on the disease suppression/development, hematological studies were carried out. There was an increase in the percent total hemocyte count, granulocyte and plasmatocyte in silkworm treated with the systemic fungicides. It possibly indicates the influence of systemic fungicide on the hemocyte mediated defense system leading to the higher resistance and suppression of disease development.

  • The effect of topical application with androstenedione on economic parameters was analyzed following treatment of last larval stadium. The treated larvae showed significantly increased larval weight along with other enhanced larval, cocoon and adult parameters. The larval period was significantly shortened in all the treated groups with increased cocooning percentages cocoon weight and its shell weight in female and filament length, weight and denier in all the treated groups. Hatching percentage increased significantly in dose dependent manner in all the treated groups when compared with the corresponding parameters of the carrier control group. This suggests that androstenedione can be used effectively for commercial silkworm rearing.

  • The collagen growth effects in rats using B. mori fibroin sponge sheet, pure fibroin solution and chitosan sponge sheet were investigated. Histopathological inspection of the wound 12 days later showed the increse of a vascular ingrowth and the absence of inflammatory cells. Wound healing effects were accelerated in the order of Fibroin sponge sheet$\geq$Fibroin dressing solution〉Chitosan sponge sheet〉Control. The mean percentage of collagen production in rats after 12 days was 46.12$\pm$4.58% and 42.11$\pm$5.67% in fibroin sponge sheet and dressing solution-treated rats, respectively. These values were higher than the relative content in the chitosan sponge sheet and control groups, which was 23.87$\pm$3.24 and 2.42$\pm$0.32%, respectively.

  • Parthenogenesis in mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori L. acquires immense use in the development of outstanding homozygous lines with higher viability, hybrid vigour, combining ability and less phenotypic variability. It can serve as a powerful tool in controlling sex of the offsprings as well as a useful tool in selection. In fact India is the second largest silk producing country in the world next only to China and all the five types of natural silks viz., mulberry, oak tasar, tropical tasar, muga and eri are produced in India. However, little information is available on the role of artificial parthenogenesis in the development of superior silkworm breeds. This paper overviews some important studies carried out on artificial parthenogenesis, and outline of different types of parthenogenesis, methods of induction of artificial parthenogenesis, factors responsible for successful parthenogenetic development, cytogenetics of artificial parthenogenesis and role of artificial parthenogenesis in silkworm breeding. Besides, an attempt is made to describe briefly about parthenogenetic engineering which includes cloning in silkworm, artificial insemination, chimeras, hybridization, chromosomal substitution and recombinant DNA in silkworm.

  • Twelve pure silkworm lines identified based in higher G.C.A values from a line${\times}$Tecter crossing programme, were crossed with twelve breeds showing cocoon shell ratio>22% and hybrids prepared, evaluated in a Multiple index method. Seven hydrids showing average index value>50 in all the 10 economic characters were seclcted and evaluated in the laboratory. However, two hybrids viz., A3${\times}$935E and A3${\times}$916B were finally selected based on the superiority of the breeds in one day shorter larval duration and with and with higher reeling characters compared to control KA${\times}$NB4D2. The breeding procedure involed in evolution hybrids are discussed.

  • Three strains (KW-1, KW-14, KW-15) of Bacillus thuringiensis were isolated from soil in Wonju area and characterized. The three strains produced parasporal inclusion bodies (crystals) and spores in their cells. The KW-1 strain produces spherical crystals. The crystals of strain KW-14 are bipyramidal crystal. The KW-15 strain harbors irregular crystals. Only minor biochemical characteristics of the three isolates were different and distinctive, however general characteristics were similar to the known serotypes of B. thuringiensis. Three strains were resistant to penicilin G, oxacillin and cephalothin. Three strains were highly toxic to Bombyx mori larvae, but not to the Culex pipiens larvae.

  • The effect of topical application with naphthoxyacetic acid on economic parameters was analyzed following treatment of fifth instar larvae. Larvae treated during the fifth instar showed significant increase in larval weight along with other enhanced larval, cocoon and adult parameters. The larval period was significantly shortened in all the treated groups with increased cocoon and shell weights in male and shell weight in female in 400 ${\mu}g$/ml treated group and filament length in all the treated groups. Fecundity increased significantly in dose dependent manner in all the treated groups, when compared to that of the carrier control group. This suggests that naphthoxyacetic acid, in addition to affecting larval growth, also affect silk production and reproductive performance.

  • The effect of supplementation with potassium nitrate on economic parameters was analysed following treatment of last larval stadium. The treated larvae showed a significant increase in larval weight at 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and silk gland weight in all the treated groups along with other enhanced larval, cocoon and adult parameters. The larval period was significantly decreased in all the treated groups with increased female and male cocoon weights its shell weights filament lengths at 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. The denier was significantly decreased in all the groups. The filament weight moth emergence percentaged length of the ovariole were unaffected. However, eggs per ovariole, fecundity and hatching percentage significantly decreased compared with the corresponding parameters of the carrier control.
