  • Regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins regulate certain G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)-mediated signaling pathways. The GABAB receptor ($GABA_BR$) is a GPCR that plays a role in the stress response. Previous studies indicate that acute immobilization stress (AIS) decreases RGS4 in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hypothalamus (HY) and suggest the possibility of a signal complex composed of RGS4 and $GABA_BR$. Therefore, in the present study, we tested whether RGS4 associates with $GABA_BR$ in these brain regions. We found the co-localization of RGS4 and $GABA_BR$ subtypes in the PFC and HY using double immunohistochemistry and confirmed a direct association between $GABA_{B2}R$ and RGS4 proteins using co-immunoprecipitation. Furthermore, we found that AIS decreased the amount of RGS4 bound to $GABA_{B2}R$ and the number of double-positive cells. These results indicate that $GABA_BR$ forms a signal complex with RGS4 and suggests that RGS4 is a regulator of $GABA_BR$.

  • The collecting duct endothelin (ET) system, which involves ET-1 and its two receptors, may play a role in the regulation of renal sodium in association with the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) system. We determined whether sodium retention is associated with changes in the endothelin and NOS systems at different stages (i.e., a sodium retaining stage and a compensatory stage) of nephrotic syndromes. On day 7 after puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) injection, urinary sodium excretion was decreased, ascites had developed, and there was a positive sodium balance. ET-1 mRNA expression was increased in the inner medulla of the kidney, whereas protein expression of ET receptor type B ($ET_BR$) was unchanged. The expression of neuronal NOS (nNOS) was decreased in the inner medulla. On day 14, urinary sodium excretion was unchanged compared with controls. The expression of $ET_BR$ increased, while nNOS expression in the inner medulla was comparable to controls. These findings suggest that decreased nNOS plays a role in the development of sodium retention in the nephrotic syndrome. Recovery of nNOS and increased renal $ET_BR$ synthesis may promote sodium excretion in later stages of the nephrotic syndrome (on day 14).

  • Comparative effects of gamma irradiation and methyl bromide (MeBr) fumigation on disinfestation and physicochemical attributes of mung bean were investigated. Insects in domestic mung bean were identified to be Collosobruchus chinensis Linne. Ina disinfestation test, MeBr showed 100% disinfestation effect on Larva and adult at 5th day after treatments, while irradiation dose above 3 kGy was effective for disinfesting all larva at that time. Adults were more sensitive to radiation than larva. Around 1 kGy was enough to control larva and adult in mung bean following 10 to 15 days of irradiation. In physicochemical properties of treated sampels, nitrogen solubility, TBA value, amino acid and fatty acid compositions were not different among the control, 2.5 kGy-irradiated and MeBr-fumigated samples. MeBr fumigation caused the decrease in lightness (Hunter's L value) and the increase in redness (a value) and yellowness (b value), thereby resulting in overall color difference (${\Delta}E$) in a noticeable level (NBS 2.61~2.94).

  • A total of six crossbred barrows ($Duroc{\times}Landrace{\times}Large$ White, $44.17{\pm}1.94kg$ BW) were housed conducted to evaluate apparent fecal digestibilities of Brown Rice (BR) as an alternative energy source in growing pigs. Pigs were housed individually on metabolism crate on the basis of body weight. Four treatments contained: 1) 100% of corn-soybean meal (C100; Control diet), 2) 75% of corn-soybean meal diet plus 25% of corn meal (C25), 3) 100% of brown rice-soybean meal diet (BR100), 4) 75% of brown rice-soybean meal diet plus 25% of brown rice meal (BR25). Brown rice has an excellent gross energy and crude protein composition compared to corn. The BR used had 3,801 kcal of gross energy/kg, 8.0% crude protein, 2.6% of ether extract, 0.035% calcium and 0.35% total phosphorus. The best digestibilities of energy (87.75%), DM (81.71%) and CP (78.57%) were observed in BR 100 group and the worst were found in Corn 25 group. The nutrient digestibility was not significantly different in most nutrients. Through this experiment, BR appeared a good alternative energy source that can replace corn yellow to 100% in growing pigs. Therefore, the price relationship between corn and BR may provide an excellent opportunity for pork producers to use BR in order to reduce feed costs provided that diet has been balanced for digestible amino acids.

  • A method for calulation of the magnetic moments for both octahedral and distorted octahedral $[V(III)A_3B_3]$ type complexes, all with $t^2_2$ configuration, has been developed [A and B = O, Cl, N, F or Br]. The calculated magnetic moments by this method are in reasonable agreements with the experimental values. The calculated magnetic moments for distorted octahedral $[V(III)A_3B_3]$/TEX> type complexes decrease as the extent of tetragonal distortion increases. The effects of k (orbital reduction faction factor), $\xi'$/TEX> and temperature on the magnetic moments are also investigated.A new method for calculation of the contribution of $^3T_1$ molecular orbitals to the dipole moment and polarizability has also developed. The calculated contribution of $^3T_1$ molecular orbitals falls in the reasonable range of values.

  • Using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), polystyrene macroinitiators and polystyrene-b-poly(t-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-P(tBA) block copolymers were synthesized by CuBr/PMDETA catalyst system in solution. After hydrolysis, polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid), amphiphilic block copolymers, were formed. Subsequent neutralization of polyacid block led to the block ionomers. The molecular weight of the synthesized PS-b-P(tBA) block copolymers was easily-controlled to 5000-10000 and their distributions were less than 1.2. The chemical structures of the synthesized block copolymers were characterized by $^1$H-NMR and FT-IR. In the DSC thermograms, $T_g$ appeared in the vicinity of 100 $^{\circ}C$ because of higher styrene content. In addition, the phase separation of the block ionomers was observed by TEM.

  • The Homeobox B13 (HOXB13):Interleukin 17 Receptor B (IL17BR) index of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer (ER (+) BC) patients may be a potential biomarker of recurrence/ metastasis. However, effects of microRNA (miRNA) binding to the 3' untranslated region (3' UTR) of HOXB13 and IL17BR and its function on recurrence/metastasis in ER (+) BC remains elusive. The aims of this study were to determine the expression of miRNAs that bind to 3' UTR of HOXB13 and IL17BR in ER (+) BC patients and asess the effects of these miRNAs on recurrence/metastasis. The expression profiles of HOXB13 and IL17BR were evaluated using RT-PCR in tumors and normal tissue samples from 40 ER (+) BC patients. The expression level of 4 miRNAs, which were predicted to bind the 3' UTR of HOXB13 and IL17BR using TargetScan, microRNA.org and miRDB online databases, were further evaluated with RT-PCR. Our findings demonstrated that high miR-1266 levels might be significant prognostic factor for recurrence/metastasis occurrence (3.05 fold p=0.004) and tamoxifen response (3.90 fold; p=0.2514) in ER (+) BC cases. Although we suggest that modulation of miR-1266 expression may be an important mechanism underlying the chemoresistance of ER (+) BC, advanced studies and validation are required.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of light sources and explant types on in vitro shoot multiplication and rooting of a rare and endangered plant Abeliophyllum distichum. Both apical buds and axillary buds were used as explants under 4 different light sources, cool white florescent light (F), 100% blue light-emitting diode (LED) (B), 50% blue and 50% red LED mixture (BR), and 100% red LED (R). Clear difference was observed in terms of shoot proliferation by light sources types but not by position-dependent explant types. Multiple shoot induction rates were enhanced under both B and BR light sources. Spontaneous rooting was induced in shoot induction medium under B light source. Both the rates of rooting and numbers of roots per explant were higher in apical bud explants compared to axillary bud explants. Interestingly R light source stimulated shoot elongation but inhibited root development. Therefore, our results suggest that the use of apical bud explants under B or BR light sources is suitable for in vitro micropropagation of a rare and endangered plant species, Abeliophyllum distichum.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the groundwater and surface water contamination, to interpret the attenuation mechanism of contaminant transport, and to find the appropriate contamination indicator. at the two big landfill sites : Nanjido Landfill and Hwasung Landfill. Leachate from the Nanjido, th, Hwasung and the Kimpo waste disposal sites is characterized by high temperature (31.7-40.1$^{\circ}C$), high electric conductivity (14,650-32,800 ${\mu}$S/cm), somewhat higher pH(7.58-8.45) and low Eh (-119.4-20.4 mV), and is enriched in both major (Na$^{+}$, K$^{+}$, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$, HC $O_3$$^{-}$, Cl$^{-}$) and minor (Mn, Sr$^{2+}$, Ba$^{2+}$, Li$^{+}$, F$^{-}$, Br$^{-}$) ions. Municipal solid waste leachate and industrial waste leachate are effectively discriminated by the content of S $O_4$$^{2-}$, Fe, and heavy metals. The attenuation mechanism of each component was assessed using the chemical analysis. Cl-normalizing process, WATEQ4F simulation, and preceding flownet analysis. Based on the calculation of Contamination Factor, K, Na, Ca, Mg, B, Zn, HC $O_3$, Cl, F, Br and TOC are effective contamination indicators in the Nanjido landfill site, and K, Na, Ca, Mg, B, S $O_4$, HC $O_3$, Cl, F, Br and TOC in the Habsburg landfill site Particularly, TOC is the best contamination indicator in landfill sites influenced by sea water.

  • Spinosyns A and D are potent ingredient for insect control with exceptional safety to non-target organisms. It consists of a 21-carbon tetracyclic lactone with forosamine and tri-Omethylated rhamnose which are derived from S-adenosyl-methionine. Although previous studies have revealed the involvement of metK1 (S-adenosylmethionine synthetase), rmbA (glucose-1-phosphate thymidylyltransferase), and rmbB (TDP-D-glucose-4, 6-dehydratase) in the biosynthesis of spinosad, expression of these genes into rational screened Saccharopolyspora spinosa (S. spinosa MUV) has not been elucidated till date. In the present study, S. spinosa MUV was developed to utilize for metabolic engineering. The yield of spinosyns A and D in S. spinosa MUV was $244mgL^{-1}$ and $129mgL^{-1}$, which was 4.88-fold and 4.77-fold higher than that in the wild-type ($50mgL^{-1}$ and $27mgL^{-1}$), respectively. To achieve the better production; positive regulator metK1-sp, rmbA and rmbB genes from Streptomyces peucetius, were expressed and co-expressed in S. spinosa MUV under the control of strong $ermE^*$ promoter, using an integration vector pSET152 and expression vector pIBR25, respectively. Here-with, the genetically engineered strain of S. spinosa MUV, produce spinosyns A and D up to $372/217mgL^{-1}$ that is 7.44/8.03-fold greater than that of wild type. This result demonstrates the use of metabolic engineering on rationally developed high producing natural variants for the production.
