The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex in a reacting and non-reacting methane-air jet flow were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. After fuel and air were developed entirely in computational domain, the single vortex was generated by an axisymmetric jet that was impulsed to emit a cold fuel. Through comparisons of single vortex in reacting and non-reacting jet flow, it was found that global dynamic behaviors and the mechanisms leading to the formation, transport processes of vortex ring were influenced significantly by heat release from reaction. In addition, the interaction between a single vortex and flame bulge generated by buoyance effect in a reacting jet flow was found.
For the measurement of mass flow rate at a wide range of operation conditions, it is required that the critical nozzle gas different diameters, since the mass flow rate through the critical nozzle depends on the nozzle supply conditions and the nozzle throat diameter. In the present study, both computational and experimental investigations are performed to explore the variable critical nozzle. Computational work using the 2-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are carried out to simulate the gas flow through variable critical nozzle. In experimnet, a cylinder with several different diameters is inserted into the critical nozzle to vary the nozzle throat diameter. Computational results are compared with the experimented ones. The computed results are in close agreement with experiment. It is found that the displacement and momentum thickness of variable critical nozzle are given as a function of Reynolds numbers. The discharge coefficient of the variable critical nozzle is predicted using an empirical equation.

An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in the cylindrical annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid. By using the particle image velocimetry method. this study has found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re=20,000. 30.000. 50.000. and 70,000 along longitudinal sections. The results appear to be physically reasonable. Other experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling air flow in axisymmetric annuli. The static pressure. the local air flow temperature, and the wall temperature with decaying swirl were measured by using thermocouples and the friction factor and the local Nusselt number were calculated for Re=30,000. 50,000 and 70000. The local Nusselt number was compared with that obtained from the Dittus-Boelter equation with swirl and without swirl, respectively. The results showed that the swirl enhances the heat transfer at the inlet and the outlet of the test tube.
Discharge flows from a centrifugal pump impeller with a specific speed of 150 [rpm, m$^3$/min, m] were experimentally investigated. A large axisymmetric collector instead of a volute casing was installed to obtain circumferentially uniform flow, i.e. without interaction of the impeller and the volute. The unsteady flow was measured at the impeller exit and vaneless diffuser using a hot film probe and a pressure transducer. The flow at impeller exit showed pronounced jet-wake flow patterns. The wake, which was on the suction/hub side at high flow rate, became enlarged pitchwisely on both the hub and the shroud side as the flow rate decreases. The pitchwise non-uniformity of the flow rapidly decreased along the downstream and the non-uniformity almost disappeared at radius ratio of 1.18 for medium flow rate. The mean vaneless diffuser flow was reasonably predicted using a one dimensional analysis when an empirical constant was used to specify the skin friction coefficient. The data can be used for a centrifugal pump impeller design and validation of CFD codes and flow modeling.

For the numerical computation of three-dimensional compressible flow field within a blade row in a centrifugal compressor, a quasi 3-dimensional solver which combines a reversible B-B flow and an irreversible H-S flow using finite element methods was developed. In a reversible B-B flow, the governing coordinates are modified in order to be applied to any type of turbomachinery, and two kinds of stream functions are introduced in order to make the Kutta condition exactly satisfied. In an irreversible H-S flow, the changes of entropy in the irreversible governing equations are determined not by empirical source but by the theoretical treatment of dissipation forces. The dissipation forces are obtained from the distribution of shear stresses in the flow passage which are given from the wall shear stresses using the exponential functions. A more accurate quasi-3-dimensional solver is established where the effect of body forces is involved in the non-axisymmetric H-S flow. Some numerical results obtained from authors' previous studies for axial flow machines assure that the present method is able to predict well as long as the flow is subsonic and not under strong viscous effect.
The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the κ-εturbidence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on an unstructured adaptive grid system. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies are boattailing, base bleed, base combustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, turbulence flow and pressure charateristics have been studied for geometries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by step number, length and height. The flow over multistep aftoerbodies or base have many kinds of compressible flow characteristics including expansion waves at the trailing edge, recompression waves, separation and recirculating flow in the base region, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental data. The flow characteristics have been clearly shown.
The purpose of the present work is to develop a compressed air discharging system to eject a projectile from the underwater. For the flow analysis of compressed air tank, projectile ejection tube, and pipe system, the air is assumed as an ideal gas, undergoing 1-dimensional axisymmetric, compressible flow, the Fanno flow analysis was applied. The commercial Fluent code was used to solve 3-D Navier-Stokes equation of the internal flow within the valve. The dynamics of the projectile within the ejection tube was assumed 1-degree of freedom. The calculations were performed to four cases of valve opening area ratio, i.e., 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% opening area, at both depths of 10m and 50m. The results were shown as the figures of time variation of pressure of the compressed air tank and projectile ejection tube. The velocity and distance of the projectile were also predicted.
Present study simulates oscillatory supersonic impinging jet flows using the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. To capture the salient features of flow oscillation and overcome the divergence during the initial transient period, several tests have been conducted for the grid and time step sizes. The results also show that the effects of the inlet flow condition at the nozzle exit and turbulence on the oscillatory behavior of supersonic impinging jets are negligible. Frequencies of the surface pressure oscillation obtained by the selected numerical method are in good accord with the measured impinging tones for various cases of nozzle-to-plate distance. Two seemingly different staging behaviors with nozzle-to-plate distance and nozzle pressure variations are found to correlate well if the frequency and distance are normalized by the length of the first shock cell.
Super-cavitating flows around under-water bodies are being studied for drag reduction and dramatic speed increase. In this paper, high speed super-cavitating flow around a two-dimensional symmetric wedge-shaped body were studied using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. To verify the computational method, flow over a hemispherical head-form body was simulated and validated against existing experimental data. Various computational conditions, such as different wedge angles and caviation numbers, were considered for the super-cavitating flow around the wedge-shaped body. Super-cavity begins to form in the low pressure region and propagates along the wedge body. The computed cavity lengths and velocities on the cavity boundary with varying cavitation number were validated by comparing with analytic solution.
The impingement of a weak shock wane discharged from the open end of a shock tube upon a flat plate was investigated using shock tube experiments and numerical simulations. Harten-Yee Total Variation Diminishing method was used to solve axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible flow governing equations. Experiments were carried out to validate the present computations. The effects of the flat plate and baffle plate sizes on the impinging flow field over the flat plate were investigated. Shock Mach number was varied in the range from 1.05 to 1.20. The distance between the plate and shock tube was changed to investigate the effect on the peak pressure. From both the results of experiments and computations we obtained a good empirical equation to predict the peak pressure on the flat plate.
