  • In this study, it is numerically revealed that the secondary flow due to the Coriolls force in a straight duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct is analogous to that caused by the centrifugal force in a stationary curved duct. Dimensionless parameters $K_{LR}=Re/\sqrt{Ro}$ and Rossby number in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number and curvature ratio in a stationary curved duct. When the value of Rossby number and curvature ratio is large, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the `asymptotic invariance property`, that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as friction factors, flow patterns, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes for the same values of $K_{LR}$ and Dean number.

  • Mixers are used in various industrial fields where it is necessary to intimately mix two reactants in a short period of time. However, despite their widespread use, complex unsteady flow characteristics of industrial mixers are not systematic investigated. The present study aimed to clarify unsteady flow characteristics induced by various impellers in a tank. Impellers arc hydrofoil turbine and neo-hydrofoil turbine types. A high speed CCD camera and an Ar-Ion laser for illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent flow characteristics of the mixers. The rotating speed of impellers increased from 6Hz to 60Hz by 6Hz, The maximum velocity around neo-hydrofoil impeller is higher than the hydrofoil type impeller. These two types of turbine shows that typical flow characteristics of axial turbine and suitable for mixing high-viscosity materials.

  • This paper presents the results of a study conducted to improve the understanding of the characteristics of cylindrical capsule flow in a pipeline by taking into account of the effect of capsule density uniformity. The effect of capsule density variation in the axial direction was studied both experimentally and analytically. The experiments were xonducted in a 190mm diameter straight pipe 18m long. The velocity, tilt of capsules and the gap between the capsule bottom and the pipe bottom were measured under various conditions. In order to interpret the data on the various capsule density conditions, the stability index given in the dimensionless numberwas introduced. The motion of capsules in pipelines is strongly affected by the stability of the capsules characterized by the stability index. The experiments conducted proved that the stability index is a valid criterion for explaining and correlating data on the capsule motion and the capsule density uniformity.

  • The objective of this work is to analyze the atomization and evaporation characteristics of dimethyl ether(DME) fuel for the application of HCCI diesel engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior of DME fuel, the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were investigated in terms of spray development, spray tip penetration, impingement time, SMD, and axial mean velocity under the various injection timing and ambient conditions. For the illumination of spray, the spray visualization system was composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera and laser-sheet method was used. The atomization characteristics of DME fuel are analyzed by using phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system It was reveal that the spray development of DME is slower and rapidly disappeared as elapsed time after start of injection at the same injection duration. The impingement timing of diesel fuel was fester than that of DME fuel. The comparison of spray atomization characteristics in both fuels shows that diesel fuel has a large SMD value that DME.

  • The response of lightning impulse voltage was explored in dielectric liquids employing hydrodynamic modeling with three charge carriers using the finite element method. To understand the physical behavior of discharge phenomena in dielectric liquids, the response of step voltage has been extensively studied recently using numerical techniques. That of lightning impulse voltage, however, has rarely been investigated in technical literature. Therefore, in this paper, we tested impulse response with a tip-sphere electrode which is explained in IEC standard #60897 in detail. Electric field-dependent molecular ionization is a common term for the breakdown process, so two ionization factors were tested and compared for selecting a suitable coefficient with the lightning impulse voltage. To stabilize our numerical setup, the artificial diffusion technique was adopted, and finer mesh segmentation was generated along with the axial axis. We found that the velocity from the numerical result agrees with that from the experimental result on lightning impulse breakdown testing in the literature.

  • The spacer grids in nuclear fuel assembly locate and align the fuel rods with respect to each other. They provide axial and lateral restraint against an excessive rod motion mainly caused by coolant flow. It is understood that each rod Is supported by multiple spacer grid. In such a case, it is important to determine spacer grid span so as to avoid resonance between the natural frequency of the fuel rods and excitation frequency. Actually dynamic characteristics of the fuel rods can be improved by assigning adequate spacer grid locations. When a dynamic performance of the structure is to be improved, design sensitivity analysis plays an important role as like many structural redesign problems. In this work, a shape design concept, different from conventional design, was applied to the problem. According to the theory shape can be a design parameter and optimal shape design can be found. This study concentrates on eigenvalue design sensitivity of the fuel rod supported by multiple spacer grids to determine optimal spacer grids positions.

  • Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) composite materials have been widely used in various fields of engineering because of its advanced properties. Also, CFRP composite materials offer new design flexibilities, corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increased fatigue life. However CFRP composite materials are susceptible to impact damage due to their lack of through-thickness reinforcement and it causes large drops in the load-carrying capacity of a structure. Therefore, the impact damage behavior and subsequently load-carrying capacity of impacted composite materials deserve careful investigation. In this study, the residual strength and impact characteristics of plain-woven CFRP composites with impact damage are investigated under axial tensile test. By using obtained residual strength and Tan-Cheng failure criterion, residual strength of CFRP laminate with arbitrary fiber angle were evaluated.

  • Front-side members are structures with the greatest energy absorbing capability in a front-end collision of vehicles. This paper was performed to analyze initial collapse characteristics of spot welded hat and double hat-shaped section members, which are basic shape of side members, on the shift of flange weld pitches. The impact collapse tests were carried out by using home-made vertical air compression impact testing machine, and impact velocity of hat-shaped section members is 4.17m/sec and that of double hat-shaped section members is 6.54m/sec. In impact collapse tests, the collapsed length of hat-shaped section members was about 45mm and that of double hat-shaped section members was about 50mm. In consideration of these condition, axial static collapse tests(0.00017m/sec) of hat and double hat-shaped section members were carried out by using UTM which was limited displacement, about 50mm. As the experimental results, to obtain the best initial collapse characteristics, it is important that stiffness of vehicle members increases as section shapes change and the progressively folding mode induces by flange welding pitch.

  • The optimal design is needed for the blade geometry of the quad-rotor blades which is mainly used for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. To do this, it is important to analyze the wakes under the blades. In the present study, the flow around the rotating blades was analyzed using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). The maximum axial velocity was measured at about 60% position toward the radial direction of the blade. The positions of vorticities in the test section obtained by PIV and CFD were turned out to be almost alike. The values in the difference of pressure coefficients at the upper and the lower blades were increased depending on the radial direction. Then, the values were decreased at the blade tip. The data of the flow analysis in the present study are expected to be served as the design of blades and ducts for the thrust improvement in the future.
