A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the flow characteristics of 2-dimensional density currents induced by selective withdrawal, which is commonly suggested as a measure for removal of high turbid water from reservoirs. Saltwater has been used to simulate the density stratification over depth and PIV(Particel Image Velocimetry) for observing the velocity structure. Experimental conditions have been established according to Richardson number, which is the dimensionless number that expresses the ratio of potential to kinetic energy. From the experiments, the patterns of longitudinal decay of centerline axial velocity induced by the withdrawal have been distinguished from other experimental cases. The rate of longitudinal decay increase as the Richardson number increases. The variations of volumetric and momentum flux along the longitudinal axis have also shown to be dependent on Richardson number.
The twisting and extrusion process of the product with involute helical fin from the round billet is developed by the upper bound analysis. The twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted inclined die surface connecting the die enterance section and the die exit section linearly. In the analysis, the internal shear surface is defined as the curved twisted plane from the twisting of die surface and the shear work is calculated by the consumption of shear energy. The increase rate of angular velocity is determined by the minimization of plastic work. The angular velocity of die exit can be controlled by the land length and the length of inclined die. The alular velocity assums to be increased linearly by the axial distance from the die enterance to the die exit. The results of the analysis show that the angular velocity of the extruded product increases with the die twisting angle, the reduction of area, and decreases with the die length, the friction constant.
The study of swirl flow has been of technical and scientific interest because it has an internal recirculation field and its tangential velocity is related to the curvature of the streamline. The fluid flow for ducts or elbows of an internal engine has been much studied through numerical methods and experiments, but studies about swirl flow has been insufficient. Using the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution, time-mean turbulent intensity, with swirl and without swirl flow for Re=10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. In addition, axial velocity distribution is compared with that of Jeong's, Kodadadi's and Murakami's. It was found that the highest velocity of swirl and non-swirl flow occurs in the opposite position at the center of a round tube, $\phi$=45$^{\circ}$

Two dimensional velocity distributions outside a Mach 2.0 supersonic nozzle have been investigated using digital particle image velocimetry (PIV). Mean velocities, turbulence intensities, vorticity field and volume dilatation field are obtained from 300 instantaneous PIV images using 0.33 $\mu\textrm{m}$$TiO_2$ particle. The seeding particle of larger size, 1.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$$TiO_2$, is also used for the experimental measurements of velocity lag downstream of shock waves according to particle sizes. The results have been compared and analyzed with schlieren photographs and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results for the velocity distribution, the locations of shock waves and over-expanded shock structure. It was shown that the locations of normal shock and shock waves can be resolved by the axial or radial velocities, and the velocity lag is more significantly increased due to particle inertia as a particle size increases. And it was also found that over-expanded shock structures call be predicted by volume dilatation fields, and streamwise turbulence intensities are influenced significantly by normal shock waves.

In this paper an experimental investigation of characteristics of developing transitional unsteady flows in a square-sectional 180。 curved duct are presented. The experimental study using air is carried out to measure axial velocity profiles secondary flow velocity profiles and entrance length by using Laser Do ppler Velocimeter(LDV) system. The flow development is found to depend upon Dean number dimensionless angular frequency velocity amplitude ration and cur-vature ratio. Of special interest is the secondary flow generated by centrifugal effects in the plane of the cross-section of the duct. The secondary flows are strong and complicate at entrance region. The entrance length of transitional pulsating flow is obtained to 120。 of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.
A circular tube undergoes bucking behavior when it is subjected to axial loading. An upper bound analysis can be an attractive approach to predict the buckling load and energy absorption efficiently. The upper bound analysis obtains the load or energy absorption by means of assumption of the kinematically admissible velocity fields. In order to obtain an accurate solution, kinematically admissible velocity fields should be defined by considering many factors such as geometrical parameters, dynamic effect, etc. In this study, experiments and finite element analyses are carried out for circular tubes with various dimensions and loading conditions. As a result, the kinematically admissible velocity field is newly proposed in order to consider various dimensions and the strain rate effect of material. The upper bound analysis with the suggested velocity field accurately estimates the mean load and energy absorption obtained from results of experiment and finite element analysis.

An experimental study is performed on the flow characteristics of a swirl-jet diffuser for factory ventilation. Swirl number ranges from 0(nonswirl jet) to 0.6 when the angle of swirl vane is 60 degree. As swirl becomes strong, the maximum velocity in the plane perpendicular to jet axis decreases fast and the uniformity of velocity becomes good, particularly in the ventilated area. The similarity in velocity profiles has been found for axial velocity from even when swirl number equals 0.6. The flow characteristics of the swirl-jet which has the swirl number of 0.6 is thought to be the best among these three swirl numbers for factory ventilation. However, the pressure drop in the diffuser increases as the swirl becomes strong. This should be considered in the design of the total ventilation system including a duct system.
The effect of secondary flow on both methane/air and propane/air premixed flame was investigated experimentally. By changing the radius of curvature, various flame behavior was observed. In the V-bend nozzles, flame surface is deformed from axisymmetry. As the exit velocity increased, flame lifted off partially. When the radius of curvature of the V-bend increased, the region where premixed flame is entirely on the rim increased. Since the axial velocity field is changed due to the secondary flow effect, comparison of V-bend and straight tube with the same diameter shows larger V-bend nozzle exit velocity for both flash back and flame blowout. The flame characteristics are mapped with a equivalence ratio, a velocity, and a nozzle radius of curvature. To identify physical reasoning on the flame surface deformation, numerical calculations are conducted. OH radical distributions in flames are visualized by PLIF technique.

Fully developed turbulent flow through three concentric annuli with both the rough inner and outer walls was experimentally investigated for a Reynolds number range Re=15,000-85,000. Measurements were made of the pressure drop, the positions of zero shear stress and maximum velocity, and the velocity distributions in annuli of radius ratios, ${\alpha}=0.26$, 0.4 and 0.56, respectively. The experimental results showed that the positions of zero shear streess and maximum velocity were only weakly dependent on the Reynolds number. It was also found that the position of zero shear stress was not coincident with that of maximum velocity. Furthmore, the former was influenced more sensitively than the latter on the square-ribbed roughness along the axial direction.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of swirler angle and swirl chamber aspect ration of nozzle on the characteristics of single and twin spray. The performances of nozzle has been investigated by measurements of spray angle, droplet size, velocity and Weber number at a water pressure 0.4MHz. Visualization of spray was conducted to obtain the spray angle and breakup process. The spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity were measured by Phase Doppler Anemometry(PDA). It was found that the smaller swirler angle, the larger axial velocity became. It was also shown that the larger aspect ratio, the smaller droplet diameter became.
