Development of a Cross-flow Type Vertical Wind Power Generation System for Electric Energy Generation Using Convergent-Divergent Duct (축소-확대 유로에 적용한 횡류형 수직 풍력발전시스템의 개발)

  • New concept of wind energy conversion system is proposed to increase the energy density at a given working space. The quality of wind for wind power generation is depend on its direction and speed. However, the quality is not good on land because wind direction is changeable all the time and the speed as well. The most popularly operated wind turbine system is an axial-flow free turbine. But its conversion efficiency is less than 30% and even less than 20% considering the operating time. In this research, a cross-flow type wind turbine system is proposed with a convergent-divergent duct system to accelerate the low speed wind at the inlet of the wind turbine. Inlet guide vane is also introduced to the wind turbine system to have continuous power generation under the change of wind direction. In here, the availability of wind energy generation is evaluated with the change of the size of the inlet guide vane and the optimum geometry of the turbine impeller blade was found for the innovative wind power generation system.

Experimental Investigation on the Hydraulic Performance of the Regenerative Pump According to the Blade Angle (재생 펌프의 날개 각도에 따른 성능 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The regenerative pump is a kind of turbomachine which is capable of developing high pressure rise at relatively lower flow rates compared to the centrifugal and axial pumps. Although the efficiency of regenerative pumps is much lower than other turbomachines, still they have been widely used in many industrial applications for working at low specific speeds. There are some theoretical models to analysis the pump performance, however, the effect of the blade angle on the pump performance has not been covered in any model to date. In the present study, experimental study on the regenerative pump performance according to the impeller blade angle and its shape has been carried out. The straight radial blades with forward, backward and chevron blades which have inclined angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ were tested. The pump performance characteristics as the pressure head, efficiency were obtained depending on the flow rate for every impeller, and their results, expressed in appropriate non-dimensional coefficients, were compared and analysed in detail. From the experimental results, it was found that the pressure head and the efficiency depend strongly on the blade angles as well as the blade type. These experimental data has made it possible to better understand the effects of the blade angle on the pump performance, and widen the applicability of the current performance analysis and design models with including the effect of blade angles.

A Study on the Suppression of Cavitation in Inducer by J-Groove (J-그루브를 이용한 인듀서의 캐비테이션 억제에 관한 연구)

  • Cavitation is the most serious problem in developing high-speed turbopump, and inducer is often used to avoid cavitation in main impeller. Thus, inducer is always operating in the worst .cavitation condition. If it is possible to control and suppress cavitation in inducer by some new device, it might be possible to suppress cavitation occurring in any type of pumps. The purpose of present study is to develop a new effective method of controlling and suppressing cavitation in inducer using shallow grooves, which is named 'J-Groove'. J-Groove is installed on the casing wall near the blade tip to use the pressure difference between high pressure region and low pressure region of the inducer in an axial direction. The results show that proper combination of backward-swept inducer with J-Groove improves suction performance of turbopump remarkably in the range of partial flow rate as well as designed flow rate. The rotating backflow cavitation occurring in the range of low flow rate and the cavitation surge occurring in the vicinity of the best efficiency point can be almost suppressed by installing J-Groove.

Development of air supply system(Turbo blower) for 80kW PEM fuel cell (80kW급 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 공기공급계(터보 블로워) 개발)

  • Blower as an air supply system is one of the most important BOP (Balance of Plant) system fur FCV(Fuel Cell Vehicle). For generating and blowing compressed air, the motor of air blower consumes maximum 25% of net power and fuel cell demands a clean air. Considering the efficiency of whole FCV, low friction lubrication of high speed rotor is needed. For the purpose of reducing electrical power and supplying clean air to Fuel cell, oil-free air foil bearings are applied at the each side of brushless motor (BLDC) as journal bearings which diameter is 50mm. The normal power of driving motor has 1.7kW with the 30,000rpm operating range and the flow rate of air has maximum 160 SCFM. The impeller of blower was adopted a mixed type of centrifugal and axial which has several advantages for variable operating condition. The performance of turbo-blower and parameters of air foil bearings was investigated analytically and experimentally. From this study, the performance of the blower was confirmed to be suitable far 80kw PEM FC.

Experimental Investigation of the Development of a Rotor Type Slurry Pump (로터형 슬러리 펌프 개발을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to develop an advanced pump technology using tornado and axial pumping principles without priming water. The developed rotor type slurry pump consisted of an electric motor, driving shaft and coupling, a rotor, an impeller, suction and discharge pipes. For the clean water test, the experimental results are presented for the discharge flowrate, electric power input and vacuum pressure with the rotor design parameters as a function of the motor rpm. The slurry discharge characteristics with the solid concentration of the cement slurry was performed. As the rotor diameter and height increase, the discharge flowrate and electric power input increase while the vacuum pressure in the suction pipe decreases. The rotor thickness had no significant effect on the discharge flowrate and electric power input. Slurries with more than 18 % solid concentration, which is the development factor, can be pumped.

  • The durability test of turbo-blower for PEM fuel cell is very important process of BOP development. It is a major barrier to the commercialization of these systems for stationary and transportation power applications. Commercial viability depends on improving the durability of the air supply system to increase the reliability and to reduce the lifetime cost. In this study, turbo-blower supported by oil-free bearing is introduced as the air supply system used by 80kW proton exchange membrane fuel systems. The turbo-blower is a turbo machine which operates at high speed, so air foil bearings suit their purpose as bearing elements. The impeller of blower was adopted mixed type of centrifugal and axial. So, it has several advantages for variable operating condition. The turbo-blower test results show maximum parasitic power levels below 1.67kW with the 30,000 rpm rotating speed, the flow rate of air has maximum 163SCFM(@PR1.1). For proper application of FCV, these have to durability test. This paper describes the experiment for confirming endurance and stability of the turbo-blower for 500 hours.
