The magnitude of the axial force acting on turbopump bearings has a great influence on the operational reliability and service life of a turbopump. In the turbopump under current investigation the cavity vanes are introduced to the pump shroud casing to control the axial thrust of the turbopump. To investigate the effect of the cavity vanes, 3D computational flow analyses for a propellant pump stage including an inducer, impeller, volute and secondary flow passages are performed with and without the vanes. The results show that the cavity vanes are very effective in reducing the magnitude of axial thrust without notable changes on the overall performance of the turbopump.
The submersible motor pump could have much more merits than the general pump such as higher exhaustion head, narrower installahon place, lower noise due to operating in the water and so on. But, so far, hydraulic mechanism of the axial thrust at impeller was not analysed quantitatively and so it is very difficult to solve the occuring problems. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to minimize the axial thrust acting on thrust bearing of submersible motor pump through the analysis of hydraulic mechanism of thrust and design rivision of impeller. Test carried out on the pump with an impeller 92mm in diameter, 6 balacing holes 10mm in diameter, showed the thrust is reduced by about 86% at the normal operating point.

This paper deals with an analytical and experimental investigation to predict the axial thrust load that results from turbocharger operating conditions. The Axial forces acting on the turbocharger thrust bearing are caused by the unbalance between turbine wheel gas forces and compressor wheel air forces. It has a great influence on the friction losses, which reduces the efficiency and performance of high-speed turbocharger. This paper presents the calculation procedure for the axial thrust forces under operating conditions in a turbocharger. The first step is to determine the relationship between thrust forces and strains by experimental and numerical methods. The analysis results were verified by measuring the strains on a thrust bearing with the specially designed test device. And then, the operating strains and temperatures were measured to inversely calculate the thrust strains which were compensated the thermal effects. Therefore it's possible to calculate the magnitudes of the thrust forces under operating turbocharger by comparing the regenerated strains with the rig test results. It will possible to optimize the design of a thrust bearing for reducing the mechanical friction losses using the results.

Composite air spindles are appropriate for the high-speed and the high-precision machining as small hole drilling of printed circuit board (PCB) or wafer cutting for manufacturing semiconductors because of the low rotational inertia, the high damping ratio and the high fundamental natural frequency of composite shaft. The axial load and stiffness of composite air spindles fur drilling operation are determined by the thrust ben ring composed of the air supply part mounted on the housing and the rotating part mounted on the rotating shaft. At high-speed rotation, the rotating part of the thrust bearing should be designed considering the stresses induced by centrifugal force as well as the axial stiffness and the natural frequency of the rotating shaft to void the shaft from failure due to the centrifugal force and resonant vibration. In this work, the air supply part of the thrust bearing was designed considering the bending stiffness of the bearing and the applied load. The rotating part of the thrust bearing was designed through finite element analysis considering the cutting forces during manufacturing as well as the static and dynamic characteristics under both the axial and con trifugal forces during high-speed rotation.
In order to control and balance axial thrust of turbo machine, many types of balancing devices are used but most of them are complicated and sometimes cause troubles. In this study, a very simple device of using shallow grooves mounted on a casing wall, known as "J-Groove", is proposed and studied experimentally and theoretically. The result shows that 70% of axial thrust in an industrial 4-stage centrifugal pump can be reduced at the best efficiency point. Moreover, the analytical method of "interfered gap flow" is established and a simple formula which can determine the optimum dimension of groove and its location is proposed.

An automatic transmission, which consists of several decks of planetary gear sets, provides multiple speed and torque ratios by actuating brakes and clutches (mechanical friction components) for connecting central members of the planetary gear sets. The gear set consists of the sun gear, the ring gear, and the carrier supporting multiple planet gears with pin shafts. In designing a new automatic transmission, there are many steps to design and analyze: gears, brakes and clutches, shafts, and other mechanical components. Among them, selecting thrust bearings that not only allow the relative rotation of the central members and other mechanical components but also support axial forces coming from them is important; doing so yields superior driving performance and better fuel efficiency. In selecting thrust bearings, the magnitude of axial forces on them is a critical factor that affects their bearing size and performance; its results are systematically related to the direction of the helical angle of each planetary gear set (a geometric design profile). This research presents the effects of the helical angle direction on the axial forces acting on thrust bearings in an automatic transmission consisting of planetary gear sets. A model transmission was built by analyzing kinematics and power flows and by designing planetary gear sets. The results of the axial forces on thrust bearings were analyzed for all combinations of helix angle directions of the planetary gear sets.

In the present study, the imbalance in the axial-thrust and variation in the volumetric efficiency that occurred during the trimming of impeller diameter were investigated. The present study was focused on low-specific-speed multistage centrifugal pumps with a balancing piston as the balancing mechanism. The effects of impeller trimming on the axial-thrust balance in multistage pumps with horizontal and vertical axes were compared. The results showed that impeller trimming resulted in an additional axial-thrust acting in direction of pump inlet. The axial-thrust imbalance due to impeller trimming was more severe in the vertical-axis pumps than in the horizontal-axis pumps. The rate of increase in the diameter of the balancing piston, which was proportional to the rate of impeller trimming, was evaluated to maintain the axial-thrust balance. Furthermore, a simultaneous increase in the piston length and piston diameter was more effective for reducing the axial-thrust imbalance along with the volumetric efficiency drop.

Hybrid-type magnetic bearings using both permanent magnets and electromagnets have been used for rotating machinery. In the case of conventional thrust hybrid magnetic bearings supporting axial loads, radially magnetized permanent ring magnets, which have several demerits such as difficult magnetization and assembly, have been used to generate bias flux. In this study, a novel thrust hybrid magnetic bearing using an axially magnetized permanent ring magnet is presented. Because it is easy to magnetize a ring magnet in the axial direction, the segmentation of the ring magnet for magnetization is not required and the assembly process can be simplified. For verifying the performance of the proposed method, a test rig that consists of a proposed thrust magnetic bearing and variable loads is constructed. This paper presents the detailed design procedures and the obtained experimental results. The results show that the developed thrust magnetic bearing has the potential to replace conventional thrust magnetic bearings.
The performance analysis of a fuel pump for a liquid rocket engine has been performed numerically on its design condition. A commercial three-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow solver has been used for the computation. All of the fuel pump components - inducer, impeller, volute and secondary flow passages - are included in computation for the accurate estimation of the leakage flow rate which affects the performance and axial thrust. A pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was used on the boundaries among the fuel pump components to save computational time. The predicted overall performance satisfied the design requirement. However, the axial thrust exceeded a permissible limit. In order to reduce the axial thrust, the secondary flow passage design has been changed. With this change, the axial thrust level has been reduced to 30% as compared with the original value.

The increasing needs for higher cargo capacity in the container vessels' fleet has led to ship builder's demand for higher power output rating engine to meet the propulsion requirement, thus, leading to the development of super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. This large sized bore engines with more than 12 cylinders are capable of delivering power output up to more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating. The thrust variation force due to axial vibration occurring in propulsion shafting of these ships are transmitted to ship structure via thrust bearing. This force may vibrate the super structure of ship in the fore-aft direction and the fatigue strength of crank shaft can be decreased by additional bending stress increase in crank shaft pin and journal. In this paper, the axial vibration of propulsion shafting system on the 14RT-flex96C super large diesel engine with 14 cylinders is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.
