Recently, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea) and CIAM(Central Institute of Aviation Motors, Russia) have made an effort in developing a centrifugal compressor for a small gas turbine engine as part of a collaboration program. This compressor has been designed as a sub-component for an axial-centrifugal compression system for a small turbo-shaft engine aiming adiabatic efficiency higher than 0.81. The geometrical design requirement imposes restrictions to have high inlet hub-to-tip ratio and inlet swirl flow. In this study, the compressor has been designed using the generalized experimental data established from those compressors having pressure ratio of 3.7 to 5. From this generalized empirical correlation, desirable values of design parameters could be obtained. Subsequently, quasi-3D and 3D viscous flow analyses have been performed to ensure the adopted methodology. It is expected that the centrifugal compressor provides total pressure ratio of 4.89, corrected mass flow-rate of 1.64kg/sec, and adiabatic efficiency of 0.815 with inlet hub-to-tip ratio of 0.641. These relatively high total pressure ratio and inlet hub-to-tip ratio are the main distinctive features in this design. Besides, one of the main features of this centrifugal compressor is the adoption of a double-row bladed diffuser to effectively decelerate the transonic flow leaving the impeller. The compressor has been manufactured and will be tested in the near future.
The instrumentation was studied in order to measure aerodynamic performance and efficiency of a compressor as a component of a 5MW-class gas turbine for power generation. In case of an axial compressor, the distributions of static pressure on a casing can be obtained by averaging at each stage and those of total pressure and temperature in the flow field of the compressor can be measured with a Kiel temperature probe. In case of a centrifugal compressor, the static pressures at the hub and the tip, respectively, of an impeller exit are considerably different, so the pressures need to be measured at both positions and thereafter averaged. The distributions of static pressures in a diffuser and a deswirler are measured at ten positions along five streamlines in one pitch. In addition the flow field can be measured in detail by 5-hole Pitot tube in order to analyze the flow characteristics of the core flow region and wake region and the rotor-stator interaction of the compressor.

The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.

A computational study on the performance prediction of a two-stage axial compressor has been performed. A quasi-steady mixing-plane method is used on the rotor/stator interface to simulate the unsteady interaction phenomena. Detail flow mechanisms, for example, choke, stall, shock/boundary interaction, etc., have been observed and discussed in conjunction with performance characteristics. Calculational data agree reasonably well with the experimental data in terms of the performance characteristics showing the applicability of computational methods to the design validation of multistage axial compressors instead of experimental methods. But it is found that the stall margin of the original compressor was rather small, thus the design modification adopting a simple 1D/2D method has been conducted and its corresponding computations are also carried out. As a result of the redesign process, the stall margin becomes wide enough, but the overall performance is unsatisfactory, therefore, it seems that the redesign of the blades using 3-D methods is needed in the future work.

Generally the variable guide vane is used to secure the sufficient operating point in the off-design condition. In this study the inlet guide vane, 1st and 2nd stators in a multi-stage axial compressor are movable to obtain the operating range. So the effects of variable guide vane setting angle on the performance of 2.5 stage axial compressor were investigated at 70 % and 90 % conditions of nominal rotating speed in this paper. The steady-state and unsteady numerical analyses were conducted at each operating condition. The performance map, lost efficiency and flow fields were compared.
The performance of a centrifugal compressor composed of an impeller, tandem diffuser rows and axial guide vanes has been predicted numerically and compared with available experimental results on its design rotational speed. The pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was employed for the boundaries between rotor and stator to obtain steady state solutions. The overall characteristics showed differently according to the relative positions of tandem diffuser rows while the characteristics of impeller showed almost identical. The numerical results agree with the measured data in respect of their tendency. It turned out that 0% of relative positions is the worst case in terms of static pressure recovery and efficiency. According to the experimental results, some pressure fluctuations and malfunction of the compressor were observed for 75% case. However, this numerical calculation using mixing plane method did not capture any of those phenomena. Thus, unsteady flow calculation should be performed to investigate the stability of the compressor caused by different diffuser configuration.

The noise of a refrigerator is consisted of the various flow noises of a refrigerator fan, a compressor and a condenser fan. The demands of high flow rate, compact space and low noise are to be accommodated, especially, in the case of a premium refrigerator. In this study, flow field, noise sources and flow noise are analyzed numerically and compared to the measured data. The flow field is calculated with 3-dimensional CFD solver - SC/Tetra, and the noise source and aeroacoustic noise is analyzed with FlowNoise S/W. Low noise axial fan can be developed by controlling the dominant noise source area.
It has been indicated that the rotor/stator interaction has distinct causes of unsteadiness, such as the viscous vortex shedding, wake/stator interaction and potential rotor/stator interaction. In this paper, the mechanism of unsteady potential interaction in one stage axial compressor is numerically investigated for blade row ratio 1:1 and 2:3 at design point and for blade row ratio 2:3 at off-design point in two-dimensional view point. The numerical technique used is the upwind scheme of Van-Leer's Flux Vector Splitting(FVS) and Cubic spline interpolation is applied on zonal interface. In this study the flow unsteadiness due to potential interaction are found to be larger in blade row ratio 2:3 than in 1:1. The total pressure rise in blade row ratio 2:3 is closer to the real value in design point than that in 1:1. The change of unsteady pressure amplitude according to the variation of stator exit pressure is very small.

A numerical calculation is carried out for the analysis of 3-dimensional compressible flow field in axial-flow rotating blades by using finite element method. The calculation of flow in impellers plays a dominant role in the theoretical research and design of turbomachines. Three-dimensional flow fields can be obtained by the quasi-three-dimensional iterative calculation of the flows both on blade-to-blade stream surfaces and hub-to-shroud stream surfaces with the introduction of viscous loss model in order to consider a loss due to viscosity of fluid. In devising the loss model, four primary sources of losses were identified: (1) blade profile loss (2) end wall loss (3) secondary flow loss (4) tip-leakage loss. For the consideration of an axially parabolic distribution of loss, the results of present calcullation are well agreed with the results by experiment, thus the introduction of loss model is proved to be valid.

Three-dimensional flow analysis is implemented to investigate the flow through transonic axial-flow compressor rotor(NASA R67) and to evaluate the performances of Abid's low-Reynolds-number k-$\omega$ and Baldwin-Lomax turbulence models. A finite volume method is used fur spatial discretization. The equations are solved implicitly in time by the use of approximate factorization. The upwind difference scheme is used for inviscid terms and viscous terms are approximated with central difference. The flux-difference-splitting method of Roe is used to obtain fluxes at the cell faces. Numerical analysis is performed near peak efficiency and near stall. The results are compared with the experimental data for NASA R67 rotor. Blade-to-Blade Mach number distributions are compared to confirm the accuracy of the code. From the results, it is concluded that Abid'k-$\omega$ model is better for the calculation of flow rate and efficiency than Baldwin-Lomax model. But, the predictions for Mach number and shock structure are almost the same.
