  • Optimal design of panel with trapezoidal type stiffeners was studied using linear and nonlinear deformation theories. Also analysis method was using closed-form analysis and finite difference energy methods, respectively. Various bucking load factors are obatined for stiffened laminated composite panel with trapezoidal type stiffeners and various aspect ratios, which are made from Carbon/Epoxy USN 125 prepreg and are simply-supported on four edges under uniaxial compression. Optimal design analyses are carried out by the nonlinear search optimizer, ADS.

  • Tests of cylindrical concrete specimens under lateral confining pressure of up to 5,000 psi were conducted for two different axial loading cases: monotonic compression and monotonic tension. The purpose of this experimental investigation is to provide stress-strain characteristics of plain concrete in triaxial stress conditions. Lateral confining pressure levels, loading rates, and strength of concrete specimens are varied as parameters. The loading rates are $34.75$\times$10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for fast, $\times$$6.95x10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for normal. and $0.579$\times$10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for slow loading cases. The concrete specimens used in the experiment have compressive strength of 3,500 psi and 6,500 psi, respectively. Findings of this experiment include dependency of the stress-strain behavior of concrete on the above parameters under two different types of loading conditions. The parametric study includes a series of 106 triaxial tests.

  • The change of the structure of homogeneous turbulence subject to irrotational strains has been studied in an anti-Morel type diffuser (center matched cubic contour) using the hot wire anemometry. It was observed that the profiles of mean velocities and turbulence velocities along the center line were stable at the entrance region but rapidly changed near the matching point. The wall induced turbulence at the entrance region grows fast and was diffused toward the center at downstream. It was also observed that the axial turbulence grows faster than the radial one in the middle region of the diffusing flow and that the diffusing process has the vortex compression mechanism due to the conservation of angular momentum. These phenomena are frequently observed at the initial flow region of the free jet.

  • This study is to investigate the energy absorption characteristics of CFRP(Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tubes on static and dynamic tests. Axial static compression tests have been carried out using the static testing machine(Shin-gang buckling testing machine) and dynamic compression tests have been utilized using an vertical crushing testing machine. When such tubes are subjected to crushing loads, the response is complex and depends on the interaction between the different mechanisms that could control the crushing process. The collapse characteristics and energy absorption have been examined for various tubes. Energy absorption of the tubes are increased as changes in the lay-up which may increase the modulus of tubes. The results have been varied significantly as a function of ply orientation and interlaminar number.

  • Composites have wide applications in aerospace vehicles and automobiles because of the inherent flexibility in their design for improved material properties. Composite tribes in particular, are potential candidates for their use as energy absorbing elements in crashworthiness applications due to their high specific energy absorbing capacity and the stroke efficiency. Their failure mechanism however is highly complicated and rather difficult to analyze. This includes fracture in fibres, in the matrix and in the fibre-matrix interface in tension, compression and shear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the energy absorption characteristics of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tubes on static and impact tests. Static compression tests have been carried out using the static testing machine and impact tests have been carried out using the vertical crushing testing machine. Interlaminar number affect the energy absorption capability of CFRP tubes. Also, theoretical and experimental have the same value.

  • A laboratory investigation was carried out into effects of strain rate on undrained shear behavior of Holocene clay underneath Kobe Airport with an objective to evaluate the factor of safety of the retaining structure built on it. It was examined in a series of triaxial compression and extension tests performed using different rate of axial straining. A comparative compression test in which the strain rate was changed in steps was also carried out. Similar tests were performed in constant-volume direct shear box (DSB) test. And, the deformation characteristics of the clay were also examined in order to evaluate the variation of stiffness during undrained shearing. It was found that the undrained strength increased with not only the shear rate but also the consolidation period. ISOTACH properties seemed a key to govern the undrained shear behavior.

  • Densification behavior of various metal and ceramic powder was investigated under cold compaction. The Cap model was proposed based on the parameters obtained from axial and radial deformation of sintered metal powder compacts under uniaxial compression and volumetric strain evolution. For ceramic powder, the parameters were obtained from deformation of green powder compacts under triaxial compression. The Cap model was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification behavior of various metal and ceramic powder under cold compaction.

  • In this study, the supercavitating flow of a high-velocity moving body near air-water surface is calculated and analyzed based on a commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent. The effect of regular wave parameters including both wave height and wavelength on the cavitating flow and force characteristics of a body at different velocities is investigated. It is found that the cavity shape, lift coefficient and drag coefficient of the body vary periodically with wave fluctuation, and the variation period is basically consistent with wave period. When the wavelength is much greater than the cavity length, the effect of wave on supercavitation is the alternating effect of axial compression and radial compression. However, when the wavelength varies around the cavity length, the cavity often crosses two adjacent troughs and is compressed periodically by the two wave troughs. With the variation of wavelength, the average area of cavity shows a different trend with the change of wave height.
