  • A flow modeling method has been developed to analyze the flow in the annular base (rear- facing surface) of a circular engine nacelle flying at subsonic speed but with a supersonic exhaust jet. Real values of exhaust gas properties and temperature at an altitude of 30, 000 feet are employed. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conserva- tion of mass, momentum and energy for the wake flow field is achieved by multiple iterations with modest computer requirements.

  • Numerical Analysis has been done for the supersonic off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference between the jet and the ambient fluid. The difference of pressure generates an oblique shock or an expansion wave at the nozzle exit, The waves reflect repeatedly at the center axis and on the sonic surface in the shear layer, and the pressure difference is resolved across these waves interacted with the turbulence mixing layer. In this paper, the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation has been used with two equation $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure model. The second order TVD scheme with flux limiters, based on the flux vector split by the smooth eigenvalue split, has been used to capture internal shocks and other discontinuities. The correction term for the compressible flow and the damping function are used in the turbulence model. Numerical calculations have been done to analyze the off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference. The variation of pressure along the flow axis is compared with an experimental result and other numerical result. The characteristics of the interaction between the shock cell and the turbulence mixing layer have been analyzed.

  • Motion of a bubble inside narrow tube is numerically studied. The numerical code assumes axi-symmetric incompressible flow field. The surface of the bubble is captured by VOF (Volume Of Fluid) method, and it is advected by MARS (Multiphase Advection and Reconstruction Scheme). Air bubble inside water is first studied, and it was found that a strong vortex, which is induced by the pressure difference caused by the surface tension, is formed at the rear part of the bubble. Then flow parameters are parametrically varied to understand the correlation between the bubble shape, the bubble velocity, and the flow parameters. The parametric study revealed that the aspect ratio of the bubble mainly depends on We number, and the oscillation of the bubble speeds is dependent on Re number.

  • The Computer code KAIST-ADD LUFUNS has been developed to solve 3D compressible turbluent flow. This method employs Harten-Yee's modified upwind scheme in the explicit part and Steger-Warming Splitting in the implicit part. Flow past RAE wing-body aircraft has been computed for three different flow conditions. The result have shown good comparision with the experimental data. Baldwin-Lomax turbluence model is used for this computer code.

  • The motive gas of a supersonic ejector is supplied from different sources depending on the application. The performance of an ejector that is represented by the secondary flow pressure, starting and unstarting pressures heavily depends on the molecular properties of the motive gas. The effects of specific heat ratio of the motive gas were investigated experimentally for an axi-symmetric annular injection type supersonic ejector. Both the starting pressure and unstarting pressure, however, decreased with the increase of the specific heat ratio of the motive gas. It was discovered that the secondary flow pressure increased as the specific heat ratio of the motive gas decreased even if the stagnation pressure of the motive flow was invariant. However, when the motive gas flow nozzle area ratio is large enough for the motive gas to be condensed, different tendency was observed.

  • Recent years have witnessed the use of micro shock tube in various engineering applications like micro combustion, micro propulsion, particle delivery systems etc. The flow characteristics occurring in the micro shock tube shows a considerable deviation from that of well established conventional macro shock tube due to very low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number effects. Also the diaphragm rupture process, which is considered to be instantaneous process in many of the conventional shock tubes, will be crucial for micro shock tubes in determining the near diaphragm flow field and shock formation. In the present study, an axi-symmetric CFD method has been applied to simulate the micro shock tube, with Maxwell's slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. The effects of finite diaphragm rupture process on the flow field and the shock formation was investigated, in detail. The results show that the shock strength attenuates rapidly as it propagates through micro shock tubes.

  • The die design for hot forging was investigated for manufacturing precisely of scroll rotor made with Al-Si alloy. A scroll rotor is a non-symmetric 3-D shape part, having involute wraps. Disk-shaped billet of Al-Si alloy was extruded to wraps and boss simultaneously. Because the involute wraps is not axi-symmetric, the flow velocity and the stress of die is very much different at each portion. Moreover, the die in wraps portion is a cantilever beam and fractured. In this paper, the analysis of forming and die stress is investigated using the FEM tool, DEFORM-3D. The tensile strength of tool material is $250kg/mm^{2}$. From the analysis results, we can find the maximum principal stress of die is over the fracture strength and redesign the die. The prototype forged part is superior in net shaping and microstructure.

  • Unsteady compressible Euler equation is solved and the high-order, high-resolution numerical solver, physical boundary condition, adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model and conformal mapping are applied to computation of steady transonic flow and unsteady acoustics. The acoustic characteristics of axi-symmetric duct and two dimensional straight/S channel are studied and the computation results shows good agreements with linear analysis. In transonic case, local time stepping and canceling-the-residual techniques are used for convergence acceleration. The aspect of flow and acoustics in S-channel and the Pattern of noise radiation is changed by inflow Mach no. and static pressure at fan-face.

  • An investigation of the ejector-jets focusing on its flow properties was carried out by varying the geometric parameters. The area ratio of the primary nozzle, AR that was tested in the present measurement was 2.17 and 3.18, while the ratio of the length to the diameter of the duct downstream the primary nozzle inlet, L/D had values of 3.41, 6.82, and 10.23. For the frame work of flow characteristics, the wall pressures distribution of ejector-jet was investigated by experiment for basic study of ejector-jet performance. In result, terminal shock location and existence of series of oblique shocks are recognized. In this study, CFD analysis was conducted at the same time. And as a result of comparison experiment data with CFD analysis, the physical phenomena of ejector-jets were estimated.

  • Three kinds of jet flows encountered in the practical airframe design phase are discussed in this paper. Firstly, the side jet effect on the cavity flow over the flat plate was investigated. Secondly, the aerodynamic modeling of side jet influence on body-tail configuration was presented. Computational study of the similarity parameters was done to minimize the wind tunnel test. Lastly, supersonic jet impingement on a flat plate surrounded by solid walls was simulated numerically for both axi-symmetric and three-dimensional calculations with moving body method.
