  • We evaluated the effects of heat stress on physiological responses and milk production in Holstein and Jersey cows reared in Korea. The mean average temperature-humidity index (THI) increased significantly from May to August and then decreased until October. The mean average rectal temperature (RT) was increased in Holstein cows compared with Jersey cows, as the THI values increased from 61 to 85. The average respiratory rate (RR) was increased in Jersey cows compared with Holstein cows when the THI value increased from 61 to 85. The average surface temperature of the rumen and udder was higher in Jersey cows than in Holstein cows when the THI value increased from 61 to 85. No significant difference was noted with respect to relative serum volumes between the breeds and THI ranges, but we measured significant changes in serum pH in Holstein and Jersey cows when the THI value increased from 61 to 85. Milk production was not significantly changed in Holstein cows when the THI increased from 61 to 85, but milk production and milk protein content were significantly altered in Jersey cows when the THI increased from 61 to 85. Current study suggests that Holstein cows still have an advantage in terms of the economic returns of dairy farms in Korea. Therefore, further research is required regarding the heat tolerance of Jersey cows in Korean climatic conditions.

  • Due to the frequent emergence of global abnormal climates, related studies on meteorological change is being actively proceed. However, the research on trend analysis using weather data accumulated over a long period of time was insufficient. In this study, the trend of temperature time series data accumulated from automated surface observing system (ASOS) for 40 years was analyzed by using a non-parametric analysis method. As a result of the Mann-Kendall test on the annual average temperature and seasonal average temperature time series data in South Korea, it has shown that an upward trend exists. In addition, the result of calculating the Sen's slope, which can determine the degree of tendency before and after the searched change point by applying the Pettitt test, recent data after the fluctuation point confirmed that the tendency of temperature rise was even greater.

  • According to the 2020 Global Climate Report released by the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature of the Earth in 2019 was measured 1.1℃ higher on average than the temperature measured between 1850 and 1900 before industrialization. The change in average temperature affects the distribution of plants, and according to the vulnerability analysis paper, it can be seen that there is a change in the distribution area of plants when the average temperature rises. In this paper, to cope with these environmental changes, we propose a method of fabricating intermittent flow hydroponic smart farms using Arduino and sensors and controlling them through PCs and applications. The manufactured hydroponic smart farm identifies the farm's temperature and humidity, positive pH concentration, illumination, and water quality to check the amount of pumping, supplement LED control, sensor condition, overall management and cultivation of the farm, and grows in an appropriate environment.

  • Temperatures of blood and skin, respiratory rate and plasma cortisol concentration in sheep at a warm (average ambient temperature of $15.3^{\circ}C$) and a hot (average ambient temperature of $27.0^{\circ}C$ environment were measured to investigate the effect of hot environment on the physiological responses in ruminant. Temperatures of core, mean skin and mean body in sheep were tended to increase at day time and to decrease at night time at both warm and hot environment, while 24-hr average for those temperatures were significantly higher at hot environment than at warm environment (P<0.05). The calculated body heat content was higher in sheep at hot environment than at warm environment (P<0.05). Respiratory rate and plasma cortisol concentration had no significant differences between warm and hot environment, suggesting that sheep were not stress by the hot environment in this experiment. It is, therefore, suggested that sheep were well adopted to hot environment by increasing body heat content against heat stress.

  • Ultrafine silicon dioxide($SiO_2$) powder was prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS) by the gas-phase reaction. The effects of reaction temperature, flow rate of gas, TEOS concentration, and preheating temperature of reactants on the particle size were investigated. As the reaction temperature increased, average particle size of the silicone dioxide powder became smaller. Smaller particles were also obtained with decreasing the residence time of reactants in the reaction zone. Larger particles having narrow size distribution were produced with the high concentrations of the reactants. The effect of the preheating temperature was not considerable on the average particle size. The range of average particle size was from 30 nm to 58 nm depending on experimental conditions.

  • This study was peformed to investigate the phase change temperature, the supercooling, the maintenance time of liquid phase and the change rate of volume of TMA 30 $wt\% clathrate compound with additives. TMA 30 $wt\% clathrate compound with additive was cooled at heat source temperature of $-6^{circ}C$. The additives are ethylene glycol and chloroform. Their concentration are 0.1$wt\% respectively. The experimental results showed that the phase change temperature was not affected by additives and this was average $5.3^{circ}C$. Also the supercooling and the maintenance time of liquid phase were decreased by additives. Especially, the average value of supercooling showed by $8.8^{circ}C$ and the maintenance time of liquid phase was by 19 minutes in the case of chloroform 0.1$wt\%. Additionally, the average change rate of volume showed by $1.26{\~}1.31\%$ according to additives and the volume was decreased by the phase change from liquid to solid.

  • Stress triaxiality is recognized as one of the most important factors for predicting the failure strain of ductile metals. This study dealt with the effect of the average stress triaxiality on the failure strain of a typical low-temperature high-strength marine structural steel, EH36. Tensile tests were carried out on flat specimens with different notches, from relatively smooth to very sharp levels. Numerical simulations of each specimen were performed by using ABAQUS. The failure initiation points in numerical simulations were identified from a comparison of the engineering stress vs. strain curves obtained from experiments with simulated ones. The failure strain curves for various dimensionless critical energy levels were established in the average stress triaxiality domain and compared with the identified failure strain points. It was observed that most of the failure initiation points were approximated with a 100% dimensionless critical energy curve. It was concluded that the failure strains were well expressed as a function of the average stress triaxiality.

  • This study carried out to determine control factors for the improvement of productivity of laying hens suffering heat stress during hot weather. A total of 48,451 ISA Brown layers were housed in a farm located in Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea. Five thermo-hydrometer loggers were installed inside the house to collect data of dry-bulb temperature and relative humidity. The experiment continued for 81 days when the summer season begins from 19th June to 7th September, 2018. This study analyzed the correlations among layers' production index and daily average, highest, and lowest temperature; daily average, highest, and lowest relative humidity; and daily average, minimum, and maximum THI. The result indicated that feed consumption, hen-day egg production, egg weight, and FCR decreased as the daily average, highest and lowest dry-bulb temperature and THI rise (p<0.01). On the other hand, water intake increased as the daily average, highest and lowest dry-bulb temperature and THI rise (p<0.001). The relative humidity was not considered to have direct correlations to the layers' production index (p>0.05). However, it was noticeable that the mortality did not have significant relations with daily average and highest temperature; THI; or daily average, highest and lowest relative humidity while it was relevant to the daily lowest temperature and THI (p<0.05). In conclusion, to enhance the productivity of laying hens in a hot climate, it is recommended that daily average, highest, and lowest dry-bulb temperature and THI are maintained as low as possible. Especially, the daily lowest temperature is needed to lower to 20℃, which is the lowest critical temperature for layers.

  • To reconstruct the paleo-temperature quantitatively and to overcome limitation of traditional qualitative pollen analysis, this study was performed pollen analysis using the modern surface soil at Yulha-dong, Gimhae-si of southeastern part of Korean peninsula. Canonical Correspondence Analysis(CCA) was done to identify the most important environment variable about composition of modern surface pollen sample. Also, Weighted Average-Partial Least Square(WA-PLS) was analyzed to obtain modern surface pollen-temperature transfer function. The transfer function was applied to the results of qualitative fossil pollen analysis at Yulha-dong, Gimhae-si, Sampyung-ri, Ulsan-si and Taewha-dong, Ulsan-si. Therefore, the paleo-temperature was reconstructed during the Holocene since 6,200 yr BP. According to the results of the research, it is $1{\sim}2^{\circ}C$ lower than the current average annual temperature at the study area in 6,200 yr BP, since then it increased to the same level to the current temperature and decreased again until 2,600 yr BP. From the 2,600 yr BP, the temperature was fluctuated to the present.

  • This study which is the fundamental work to investigate the property of urban climate compared the property of thermal environment in the downtown location and the outskirt site based on the field observation in the summer. We analysed thermal environment in the downtown location mainly by distributional characteristics during day and night with changes and correlation analysis of the air temperature, the globe temperature and the surface temperature through the simultaneous observation of the property of thermal environment at two places in real time. The summary of finding in this study is as follows. (1)It is observed on the day chosen by sample that diurnal air temperature range in the downtown location is $22.3{\sim}34.9^{\circ}C$, and diurnal air temperature range in the Outskirt site is $20.0{\sim}34.3^{\circ}C$, so, we found that the diurnal air temperature range in the outskirt site is $1.7^{\circ}C$ higher than in the downtown location. (2)In comparison of the globe temperature after sunset, we found the change of more sudden temperature drops in the outskirt site than in the downtown location. (3)It is observed on the days chosen by sample that the average of globe temperature range is $1.1^{\circ}C$, the average of surface temperature range is $1.0^{\circ}C$, and air temperature range is $2.0^{\circ}C$, thus, the we found that the average of air temperature is $1.0^{\circ}C$ higher than globe temperature and the surface temperature. (4)After the consideration of air temperature and globe temperature distribution, the highest temperature reaching time of globe temperature is one hour earlier than air temperature in the downtown location, on the other hand, although the highest temperature reaching time of globe temperature in the outskirt sites is one hour later than in the downtown location, the timelag found in the downtown location was not found in the outskirt site.
