Damage detection through structural intensity and vibration based techniques

  • The development systems for the Structural Health Monitoring has attracted considerable interest from several engineering fields during the last decades and more specifically in the aerospace one. In fact, the introduction of those systems could allow the transition of the maintenance strategy from a scheduled basis to a condition-based approach providing cost benefits for the companies. The research presented in this paper consists of a definition and next comparison of four methods applied to numerical measurements for the extraction of damage features. The first method is based on the determination of the Structural Intensity field at the on-resonance condition in order to acquire information about the dissipation of vibrational energy throughout the structure. The Damage Quantification Indicator and the Average Integrated Global Amplitude Criterion methods need the evaluation of the Frequency Response Function for a healthy plate and a damaged one. The main difference between these two parameters is their mathematical definition and therefore the accuracy of the scalar values provided as output. The fourth and last method is based on the Mode-shape Curvature, a FRF-based technique which requires the application of particular finite-difference schemes for the derivation of the curvature of the plate. All the methods have been assessed for several damage conditions (the shape, the extension and the intensity of the damage) on two test plates: an isotropic (steel) plate and a 4-plies composite plate.

An Acoustical Study on the Syllable Structures of Korean Numeric Sounds

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the syllable structures of ten Korean numeric sounds produced by ten students. Each sound was normalized by its maximum intensity value and divided into onset, vowel, and coda sections after finding abrupt or visible changes in energy values or cumulative values of lower spectral energy at each pulse point using four Praat scripts. Then, segmental durations and cumulative intensity values of each syllable were obtained to find a statistical summary of the syllable structure. Intensity values at 100 proportional time points were also collected to compare the ten sounds. Results showed as follows: Firstly, there was not much deviation from the grand average duration and intensity for the majority of the sounds except the two diphthongal sounds on which their boundary points varied among the speakers. Secondly, the onset point for the CV or CVC category sounds and the boundary between the vowel and the nasal or lateral sound were easy to identify, which may be automatically traced later. Thirdly, there seems some tradeoff among the sections maintaining the same total duration per each syllable. Further studies on syllables with various onsets or codas would be desirable to make a general statement on the Korean syllable structure.

Monitoring of Non-point Source Pollutants Generated by a Flower Farm

  • This paper considers the effect of rainfall on non-point source (NPS) pollutant loads. The impact of runoff on the occurrence of NPS pollutants was found to be influenced by rainfall amount, rainfall intensity, and the number of antecedent dry days (ADD), both independently and in combination. The close correlation ($R^2$ = 0.9920) between rainfall and runoff amounts was demonstrated at the study site (a flower farm) over the period between January 2011 and December 2013. The relationships among pollutant levels, runoff, and rainfall was not satisfactory results except for the Biochemical Oxygen Demand ($BOD_5$). The correlation coefficients between $BOD_5$, and both runoff and rainfall, were greater than 0.92. However, the relationships of other pollutants, such as Suspended Solid (SS), Chemical Oxygen Demand ($COD_{Mn}$), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP), with runoff and rainfall had correlation coefficients of less than 0.70. The roles of rainfall was different from rainfall categories on the occurrence of runoff. Instantaneous rainfall intensity was a principle factor on the occurrence of runoff following light rainfall events (total ${\leq}30mm$). For rainfall of intermediate intensity (total precipitation 31-50 mm), the combined effect of both average rainfall intensity and ADD was found to influence runoff generation. We conclude that the control of NPS pollutants with the reflection of the climate change that makes the remarkable effect of amounts and forms on the rainfall and runoff.

밝기 정보와 곡선전개 기반의 활성 모델 (Intensity Information and Curve Evolution Based Active Contour Model)

  • 본 논문에서는 영역의 경계를 추출하기 위해 영상의 밝기 정보와 곡선전개 방식을 이용한 기하 활성 모델을 제안한다. 영역의 경계를 추출하는 문제를 추출한 영역의 평균 밝기 값과 전개중인 폐곡선 영역의 밝기 값의 차론 최소화시키는 것으로 설정한다. 최적의 해를 구하는 방법으로 레벨세트 이론을 적용한 곡선전개 방법을 이용한다. 이 방식은 일반적인 활성 모델에 비해 초기 곡선 설정에 제약이 없고 동시에 여러 영역의 경계 추출이 가능하다. 제안 모델은 에지 정보가 충분치 못한 영상의 경우에도 일반적인 에지 기반 방식에 비해 추출 결과가 양호하였다. 비등방성 확산 필터를 사용하여 영상을 전처리 함으로써 보다 나은 추출이 수행되었다. CT나 MRI 영상을 이용하여 모델의 성능을 확인하였다.

Paleostress of the Joseon and Pyeongan Supergroups in South Korea using the New Calcite Strain Gauge (NCSG)

  • Limestone bodies under the tectonic environment have experienced various tectonic processes, and also changed the stress state. In this study, calcite twins found in limestones of the Joseon Supergroup and Pyeongan Supergroup in the northeastern part of the Ogcheon Belt, South Korea were measured, then the paleostress (i.e., the maximum shortening axis) was reconstructed using the new calcite strain gauge (NCSG) technique. The average twin thickness and average twin intensity increase as the total twin strain increases. We utilize the appearance of twins, the average twin thickness and average twin intensity, and the total twin strain to estimate that the observed calcite twins were produced at temperatures of < $200^{\circ}C$ in the Joseon Supergroup and $170^{\circ}C$ in the Pyeongan Supergroup. In the Joseon Supergroup, the dominant direction of the maximum shortening axis WNW-ESE to NW-SE; NE-SW shortening is also observed. The maximum shortening axes in the Pyeongan Supergroup are oriented NW-SE and NE-SW. The NE-SW direction of maximum shortening is associated with the occurrence of the Songrim orogeny of the Paleozoic to Early Jurassic, and the NW-SE direction of maximum shortening correlates to the Daebo orogeny of the Early Jurassic to Late Jurassic. It is thus concluded that the paleostress across the study area changed from NE-SW to NW-SE during the Mesozoic.

간벌강도에 따른 낙엽송의 휨 및 종압축강도성능 (Bending and Compressive Strength Properties of Larix kaempferi According to Thinning Intensity)

  • 우리나라의 중요한 조림 수종 중에서 낙엽송을 대상으로 하여, 간벌실시에 따른 물리 역학적 성질을 비교 평가함으로써 간벌 실시가 목재의 재질에 미치는 영향과 양질재 생산 및 목재의 효율적 이용을 위한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 간벌정도에 따른 시료는 무간벌, 약도간벌, 강도간벌을 실시한 광릉시험림에서 벌채하여 사용하였다. 간벌 정도에 따른 평균 만재율은 무간벌 < 약도간벌 < 강도간벌의 경향이었고 평균 연륜폭은 무간벌 < 약도간벌 또는 강도간벌의 경향이었다. 간벌 정도에 따른 평균 휨강도는 무간벌 > 약도간벌 >강도간벌의 경향이었고 간벌 정도에 따른 평균 압축강도는 무간벌 > 약도간벌 >강도간벌의 경향이었다. 이러한 결과로 낙엽송은 간벌에 의하여 휨 및 종압축강도가 감소하는 경향이었다.

호흡동조전산화단층촬영과 콘빔전산화단층촬영의 팬텀 영상 체적비교 (Comparison of Volumes between Four-Dimensional Computed Tomography and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Images using Dynamic Phantom)

  • 목 적 : Computerized imaging reference systems 동적팬텀을이용한 cone-beamcomputed tomography(CBCT) 영상과 four-dimensionalcomputed tomography(4DCT) 영상의 체적을 비교분석 하고자 한다. 대상 및 방법 : 동적팬텀 내에 직경 1, 2, 3 cm 노드를 각각 삽입하고, CT simulator와 TruebeamSTx X-ray Imaging system을 이용하여 4DCT 영상과 CBCT 영상을 얻었다. 4DCT 영상은 maximum intensity projection(MIP), minimum intensity projection(MinIP), 그리고 average intensity projection(AVG)영상으로 재구성 하고 노드의 체적은 Eclipse system의 CT ranger tool로 CT number를 설정하여 측정하였다. 결 과 : CBCT를 기준으로 노드1, 2, 3 cm의 체적을 비교하였을 때 4DCT의 MIP는 0.54~2.33, 5.16~8.06, 9.03~20.11 ml, MinIP는 0.00~1.48, 0.00~8.47, 1.42~24.85 ml, AVG는 0.00~1.17, 0.00~2.19, 0.04~3.35 ml의 차이를 보였다. 결 론 : 노드의 체적을 비교한 결과 CBCT 영상은 4DCT의 AVG 영상과 유사한 것으로 확인되었다.

통합오염원단위 지수를 이용한 환경성과 측정 (Measure of Environmental Performance through Integrated Pollution Intensities)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 24개 광업과 제조업종을 대상으로 1995~1999년간 통합된 오염원단위 지수와 변화지수를 제시하고 이를 통하여 환경성과를 측정하고자 함이다. 본 연구는 오염원단위의 새로운 정의와 통합된 오염원단위를 측정하는 새로운 기법을 제시한다. 광업과 제조업을 경공업, 중공업 그리고 중공업내 오염산업과 여타중공업으로 구분하고 실증적으로 통합원단위 지수와 변화지수를 계측한다. 통합오염원단위 지수 기준으로 중공업내 오염산업은 가장 오염집약적인 업종인 반면, 같은 중공업내 여타 중공업에 속한 업종은 가장 오염저감에 성공적이다. 통합오염원단위 변화지수를 기준으로 산업 전체의 평균치는 1,091로서 오염배출량변화지수가 1.133으로 연간 13.3% 증가한 반면 산출량변화지수는 1.039로 연간 3.9% 증가하여 약 9.1% 상승하였다. 경공업과 중공업의 통합원단위 변화지수는 각각 1.125와 1.042였고, 오염산업의 평균이 1.287로 가장 높았음에도 중공업의 평균이 낮았던 것은 역시 여타 중공업의 평균이 0.913으로 연간 약 9% 가량 감소하였기 때문이다.

심장 CT 영상에서 밝기값 분포와 적응적 기울기 프로파일을 이용한 좌심실 내외벽 경계 검출 (Endo- and Epi-cardial Boundary Detection of the Left Ventricle Using Intensity Distribution and Adaptive Gradient Profile in Cardiac CT Images)

  • 본 논문에서는 CT 영상에서 밝기값 분포와 기울기 정보를 고려한 방사선 추적 기반의 좌심실 내외벽 자동 분할 기법을 제안한다. 첫째, 심근 내벽 경계는 임계값 기법과 영역확장법으로 분할하고, 꼭지근을 포함하는 위하여 방사형의 방사선 추적 기법을 이용하여 분할한다. 둘째, 심근 외벽 경계는 적응적 기울기 프로파일 내에 심근의 밝기값과 최대 기울기를 갖는 점을 추출한다. 마지막으로, 타원이나 원의 형태를 유지하기 위하여 내외벽의 잘못된 경계점들을 타원방정식으로 선형 보간하고 B-스플라인을 적용하여 최종 분할된 결과를 추출한다. 제안방법의 평가를 위해 육안평가와 정확성 평가, 수행시간을 측정하였다. 정확성 평가를 위하여 임상의의 수동 분할 결과와 제안 방법 분할 결과 간의 평균거리차이와 중복영역비율을 측정하였다. 실험 결과 평균거리차이는 $0.56{\pm}0.24mm$로 측정되었고, 평균 중복영역비율은 평균 $82{\pm}4.2%$로 측정되었다. 제안 방법을 적용한 수행 시간은 평균 1초로 수행을 완료하였다.

2008년 태풍 특징 (Characteristics of Tropical Cyclones over the Western North Pacific in 2008)

  • The purpose of this study is to summarize the tropical cyclone (TC) activity of 2008 over the western North Pacific including the verification of the official track and intensity forecast errors of these TCs. The TC activity - frequency, Normalized Typhoon Activity (NTA), and life span - was lower than 58-year (1951-2008) average. 22 tropical cyclones of tropical storm (TS) intensity or higher formed in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2008. The total number is less than 58-year average frequency of 26.4. Out of 22 tropical cyclones, 11 TCs reached typhoon (TY) intensity, while the rest 11 TCs only reached severe tropical storm (STS) and tropical storm (TS) intensity - six STS and five TS storms. One typhoon KALMAEGI (0807) among them affected the Korea peninsula. However, no significant impact - casualty or property damage - was reported. On average of 22 TCs in 2008, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) official track forecast error for 48 hours was 229 km. There was a big challenge for individual cyclones such as 0806 FENGSHEN and 0817 HIGOS presenting significant forecast error, with both intricate tracks and irregular moving speed. The tropical cyclone season in 2008 began in April with the formation of NEOGURI (0801). In May, four TCs formed in the western North Pacific in response to enhanced convective activity. On the other hand, the TC activity was very weak from June to August. It is found that the unusual anti-cyclonic circulation in the lower level and weak convection near the Philippines are dominant during summertime. The convection and atmospheric circulation in the western North Pacific contributed unfavorable condition for TC activity in the 2008 summertime. The 2008 TC activity has continued the below normal state since mid 1990s which is apparent the decadal variability in TC activity.
