It is important to completely understand heat/mass transfer from a flat plate because it is a basic element of heat/mass transfer. In the present study, local heat/mass transfer coefficient is obtained for two flow conditions to investigate the effect of boundary layer using the naphthalene sublimation technique. Obtained local heat/mass transfer coefficient is converted to dimensionless parameters such as Sherwood number, Stanton number and Colburn j-factor. These also are compared with correlations of laminar and turbulent heat/mass transfer from a flat plate. According to experimental results, local Sherwood number and local Stanton number are in much better agreement with the correlation of turbulent region rather than laminar region, which means analogy between heat/mass transfer and momentum transfer is more suitable for turbulent boundary layer. But average Sherwood number and average Colburn j-factor representing analogy between heat/mass transfer and momentum transfer are consistent with the correlation of laminar boundary layer as well as turbulent boundary layer.

Evaporation heat transfer characteristics were studied in a horizontal tube using R22/R114 non-azotropic refrigerant mixture. the heat transfer coefficient was high in the upper part for pure refrigerants, and heat transfer coefficient was low in the lower part for refrigerant mixtures. In the low quality region where nucleate boiling was dominant, the average heat transfer coefficient was low. In the region where forced convection was dominant, heat transfer coefficient was high. Results show that the heat transfer coefficient for pure refrigerants obtained by experiments were lower than those of Yoshida et al. but agreed well with Jung et al., and Chen et al. data. But the heat transfer coefficients for refrigerant mixtures were lower about 20% than those predicted by the equation for pure refrigerant.
A series of experiments have been carried out to investigate the effects of non-condensable gas on the direct contact film condensation of vapor mixture under an adiabatic wall condition. The average heat transfer coefficient of the direct contact condensation was obtained at the atmospheric pressure with four main parameters ; air-mass fraction, mixture velocity, film Reynolds number, and the degree of water film subcooling having an influence on the condensation heat transfer coefficient. With the analysis of 88 experiments, a correlation of the average Nusselt number for direct contact film condensation of steam/air mixture at an adiabatic vertical wall was proposed as functions of film Reynolds number, mixture Reynolds number, air mass fraction, and Jacob number. The average heat transfer coefficient for steam/air mixture condensation decreased significantly while air mass fraction increased. The average heat transfer coefficients also decreased as the Jacob number increased, and were scarcely affected by the film Reynolds number below a mixture Reynolds number of about 245,000.
The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside the rib-roughened cooling passage of the gas turbine blades. A square duct with rectangular ribs is used and $\wedge-$ and V-shape ribs with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle are installed on the test plate surfaces. Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The ribs disturb the main flow resulting in the recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wall and the vortices near the side-wall. The local heat transfer and the secondary flow in the duct are changed largely according to the rib orientation. A square duct with $\wedge$ and V-shape ribs has two pairs of secondary flow because of the rib arrangement. So, the duct has complex heat/mass transfer distribution. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $\wedge-$ and V-shape ribs are higher than those with $90^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ attack angles. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient on the $\wedge-shape$ ribs is higher than that on the V-shape ribs. Also, the uniformity of heat/mass transfer coefficient on discrete ribs is higher than that on continuous rib.

The present work experimentally investigated the effects of mass flux, heat flux, inlet quality on the heat transfer performance inside the U-bend of smooth and microfin tube using R-22 and R-407C refrigerants. The parameters were 200 and 400 kg/m$^{2}$ s for mass flux, 6 and 12 kw/m$^{2}$ for heat flux, 0.1 and 0.2 for inlet quality under the pressure of 0.65 MPa. The apparatus consisted of the test section of four straight sections and three U-bends, preheater, condenser, refrigerant pump, mass flow meter etc. The average heat transfer coefficient at the downstream straight section after U-bend was affected by U-bend due to the centrifugal force and mixing of two-phase flow in the U-bend. The average heat transfer coefficient at the U-bend was 4 ~ 33 % higher than that at the straight section. The average heat transfer coefficients were affected in the order of mass flux, heat flux and inlet quality. The average heat transfer coefficients in the microfin tube were lager by 19 ~ 49% and 33 ~ 69% than that in the smooth tube at the straight section and at the U-bend separately. The average heat transfer coefficients for R-407C were larger by 33 ~ 41% and 17 ~ 29% than that for R-22 in the smooth tube and the microfin tube separately.

An experimental study is performed to obtain an average heat transfer coefficient around the perimeter of a near horizontal tube. For the test a stainless steel tube of 50.8 mm diameter submerged in water at atmospheric pressure is used. Both subcooled and saturated pool boiling conditions are considered and the inclination angle of the tube is changed from the horizontal position to $9^{\circ}$ in steps of $3^{\circ}$. In saturated water, the local boiling heat transfer coefficient at the azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$ from the tube bottom can be regarded as the average of the coefficients regardless of the tube inclination angles. However, when the water is subcooled the location for the average heat transfer coefficient depends on the inclination angle and the heat flux. It is explained that the major mechanisms changing the heat transfer are closely related with the intensity of the liquid agitation and the generation of big size bubbles through bubble coalescence.

A heat pump system is constructed to evaluate its performance and heat transfer characteristics with mixtures of R22/R142b as working fluids. The heat transfer in the evaporator and the overall performance are measured and analyzed in terms of the compositions and relevant variables. Possibility of capacity modulation by changing composition is observed without degradation of heat transfer coefficients and coefficient of performance. The cooling capacity is varied continuously within 200 percent based on minimum capacity at constant compressor speed. For similar cooling capacity, COP is improved by mixing two refrigerants and shows maximum value at 60% mass fraction of R22. Average heat transfer coefficients of mixtures decrease in comparison with pure refrigerants at similar cooling capacity and mass flow rate. However, the overall heat transfer coefficients decrease moderately. A cycle simulation is performed in order to manifest the advantages of using refrigerant mixtures, considering experimentally observed heat transfer characteristics.

Soft icecream is made by scraping an ice formed on the inside of the cylindrical evaporator, where R-404A is evaporating in the annulus. The heat transfer characteristics of the refrigerant evaporation and those during icecream formation were experimentally investigated. Results show that the refrigerant-side heat transfer coefficients are highly dependent on the location in the evaporator due to the complex annulus configuration. The heat transfer coefficient at the inlet is generally lower than those of other locations. The average heat transfer coefficient increases as heat flux increases or saturation temperature decreases. A correlation is developed to predict the refrigerant-side heat transfer coefficient. The icecream-side heat transfer coefficient oscillates continuously due to the periodic removal of ice formed on the surface. The average heat transfer coefficient during icecream formation is approximately 280 W/$m^2K$, and that during single-phase cooling increased from 150 W/$m^2K$ to 250 W/$m^2K$.
The overarching objective of this study is to predict the convective heat transfer around a human body under forced strong airflow conditions assuming a strong wind blowing through high-rise buildings or an air shower system in an enclosed space. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of the flow field and temperature distributions around a human body were carried out to estimate the convective heat transfer coefficient for a whole human body assuming adult male geometry under forced convective airflow conditions between 15 m/s and 25 m/s. A total of 45 CFD analyses were analyzed with boundary conditions that included differences in the air velocity, wind direction and turbulence intensity. In the case of approach air velocity $U_{in}=25m/s$ and turbulent intensity TI = 10%, average convective heat transfer coefficient was estimated at approximately $100W/m^2/K$ for the whole body, and strong dependence on air velocity and turbulence intensity was confirmed. Finally, the formula for the mean convective heat transfer coefficient as a function of approaching average velocity and turbulence intensity was approximated by using the concept of equivalent steady wind speed ($U_{eq}$).
The structural analysis of a reactor coolant pump(RCP) of a nuclear power plant is very important for the safety assessment of the plant. Accurate boundary conditions for the heat transfer coefficient are required for reliable thermal stress analysis of the pump casing, especially in transient operations of the pump since the coolant properties are largely dependent on operational conditions. In the present study, a 3D mixed flow type coolant pump was modeled from the RCP drawings and analyzed in the steady state and number of transient flow conditions by using a commercial code STAR-CD. From the result of the computation, it is seem that the average heat transfer coefficients for the cases considered are found to be the suggested values of the manufacturer, Westinghouse Energy System. The unevenness in local heat transfer coefficients, however, is found to be considerable so that the use of average heat transfer coefficients in all boundaries might not give reliable thermal stresses.
