Relative to the outer surface of the mastic coating, the reliability of the available waterproofing resource is determined by the ability to stabilize the structural characteristics in difficult climatic conditions. Organic components of mastic as a result of solar radiation, elevated temperatures and their alternating change, atmospheric oxidants, especially in industrial areas, have a tendency to self-polymerization and loss of low molecular weight components. This is the gradual loss of deformability and the transition to brittleness with its tendency to crack as the reasons for the gradual transition from normal to emergency operating condition. The presented mechanism of functioning of the coating surface indicates the expediency of increasing its components, able to stabilize the structure and prevent changes in deformability.Durability, hydrophobicity, water displacement, water absorption are accepted as estimating indicators. The main dependences of the influence of the lost additional components of mastic on the operational properties of the formed coating characterize the ability to provide successful resistance to environmental influences and longer stability. As a result, mastic acquires additional service life.
Korean agriculture experienced rapid changes in its production structure to respond fluctuations on external conditions, and these changes have increased the dependence between agricultural resources and negative environmental externalities from agricultural production. As a tool for managing agricultural resources and reducing negative environmental effects from agricultural production, this study employs water-energy-food nexus for integrated resource management. To show the necessity of an integrated approach, this study evaluated three policy scenarios including changes in capital interest, water capacity, and energy cost. The results show that three scenarios have unintended consequences for farmers' incomes and their use of resources. Also the unintended consequences of government policies also affected farms' vulnerability to environmental changes. In particular, the expansion of financing for the establishment of non-circulating water curtain facilities did not have a significant effect on the crop switching of farms. In addition, increasing the amount of available water through the aquifer recharge project leads to the installation of non-circulating water curtain facilities in zucchini farm. It raises dependence on groundwater in agricultural production, thereby increasing farmers' vulnerability to groundwater shortages. These results imply that the agricultural sector needs to consider the interrelationship between agricultural resources when designing or evaluating policies.
In this study, Kajiyama equation and SWAT model were used to estimate the available water resources from 1967 to 2003 at the small scale watershed, located in Dongnae-Myeon, Chunchen, Gangwon. The annual average streamflow for dry years estimated using the Kajiyama equation and the SWAT model were $2,593,779m^3$ and $2,579,162m^3$. The annual average streamflow for wet years were $7,223,804m^3$ and $7,035,253m^3$, respectively. The annual arrange streamflow for the entire 36 year period were $14,868,601m^3$ and $14,214,292m^3$, respectively. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient for comparison between Kajiyama and SWAT were 0.90 and 0.79, respectively. The comparison indicates that the Kajiyama equation and the SWAT model can be used to estimate the streamflow at th study watershed with reasonable accuracy, although the estimated values were not compared with measured streamflow data, which is not available at the small scale study watershed. However, the Kajiyama equation is recommended for estimating available water resources at Dongnae-Myeon watershed because of its ease-of-use and reasonable accuracy compared with the SWAT model, requiring numerous model input and expensive GIS software in operating the model

The concept of virtual water has been largely applied in the study of regional, national, and global water flows with particular emphasis on water scarcity. Despite water traditionally being managed locally, certain global forces influence the local water resource scarcity/availability and hence virtual water exchanges worldwide. It is therefore of necessity that the significant forces be examined to understand the relationship between available water in a region and the variability and trends in environmental, social, and economic factors that are of utmost importance in the formulation of water resources management policies. This study therefore reviewed recent literature from 2003 - 2019 to determine the significant indicators of virtual water trade at different spatiotemporal levels. The study examined and compared the major approaches to virtual water trade flows accounting, and also identified and discussed policy implications and future research options concerning the analysis of virtual water trade. Available information has shown that virtual water trade is significantly influenced by economic (GDP, Demand-Supply of goods and services), geographical (Distance), institutional (population) and environmental (water availability, arable land, precipitation) factors. Reports further show that the selection of a given approach for virtual water trade flows accounting will depend on the scope of the study, the available datasets, and other research preferences. Accordingly, this study suggests that the adoption of multidisciplinary approaches to virtual water trade, taking into consideration the spatial and temporal variations in water resources availability and the complexity of environmental and socioeconomic factors will be pivotal for establishing the basis for the conservation of water resources worldwide.
Various types of karst topographies are found worldwide. Owing to their global distribution, karst areas have been extensively studied by scientists who investigate new discoveries by linking the characteristics of karst topographies with their own research fields. However, there have been only a few studies on karsts in the Republic of Korea, and little research exists on their hydrogeology. Fragmentary studies have been conducted on the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in limestone areas, the causes of high arsenic concentrations in groundwater, and the hydraulic conductivity of limestone areas. Research on hydrogeological characterization and flow mechanisms in these areas has only began recently. Identification and the proper management of available groundwater resources in karst (limestone) areas is essential as their unique geological characteristics render it difficult to construct reservoirs or dams at appropriate scales. We have reviewed prior work on karsts in the Republic of Korea to provide information that supports water resource security in the karst areas, to improve the understanding of the equitable use of water resources, and to identify the best management practices for groundwater resource resilience improvement.

Globally, agriculture is one of the largest consumers and polluters of water resources, contributing to the unsustainable use of limited water resources. To reduce the resource use and environmental footprints associated with current and future food systems, researchers and policy makers have recommended the transition to sustainable and healthier diets and the reduction of food loss and waste along the food supply chain. However, there is limited information on the synergistic effects and trade-offs of adopting the two measures. In this study, we assessed the water-saving potential of the two measures in South Korea using environmentally extended input-output relying on the EXIOBASE database for the reference year 2020, along with scenario analysis to model the potential outcomes. Specifically, we analyzed scenarios where meat consumption was reduced by 30% and 50% and in combination with a 50% reduction in food waste at the consumption stage for each scenario. According to our findings, by considering individual measures of dietary change and food waste reduction, shifting to a diet with 30% and 50% less meat consumption could lead to reduction in water footprint by 6.9% and 7.5%, respectively, while 50% reduction in food waste at the consumption stage could save about 14% of water footprint. However, the synergistic effects of the two measures such as 30% less meat consumption and 50% food waste reduction, and 50% less meat consumption and 50% food waste reduction result to 20% and 24% reductions in water footprint, respectively. Moreover, our findings also showed that increasing food consumption with high environmental impacts could promote resources use inefficiency when waste occurs. Thus, policy strategies that address synergistic effects of both dietary change and food waste reduction should be strengthened to achieve sustainable food system. International and national policies can increase resource efficiency by utilizing all available reduction potentials while considering strategies interactions.

Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus is a new holistic resources management concept that considers the interconnections among resources for sustainable resources planning and management. The current challenge is to fulfill the required demand in the lack of available resources. A traditional way to provide more available resource is by increase in production, but it caused increment of indirect demand of other interlinked resources. Importing resources from other area (where local supply is redundant) is another option to secure local resources with additional economic expenditure. The WEF nexus-trading model adapts the previously developed nationwide nexus simulation model with additional input parameters and functions to simulate trading scenarios. In general, the analysis starts with the quantification of local resources deficit (potential importing amount) and redundancy (potential exporting amount) of each area. Then, a trade module is initiated by determining possible donor area and importation amount. Finally, the nexus simulation for all area is re-run to determine final resources supply-demand results including the trading amount. The trade option provides an opportunity to meet local demands without draining local resources. However, the production capability of donor area may limit the importation amount. The newly developed trade option allows more alternatives for stakeholders to determine resources management plans.

Calcined clay granules (pellet) have been used as a soil conditioner. The space among the pellets can secure drainage of water in soil and, simultaneously, can keep water for plants in the inner pore of that. However, the usage of the pellet has been restrained because fabrication of that requires a high energy and cost for heating over the temperate of $1000^{\circ}C$. Recently, SCS(Self-propagating Combustion and Sintering) method was developed and this method use the combustion energy of the preliminary mixed combustible. The SCS method is suitable to fabrication of small porous aggregate and requires a very low cost. This research applied the SCS method to coal refuses for fabrication of soil conditioner pellets. The coal refuses were pulverized under the size of $100{\mu}m$ and the pulverized powders were pelletized to the size of 4~6mm. The pellets were heated at the temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ in the SCS furnace that was specially prepared for this research. Characteristics of the pellets were investigated and were compared with that of ordinary calcined clay pellet of kaolin; porosity, pore size distribution, bulk density, pH and etc.. Characteristics of the moisture retention in the pellets were measured by the centrifugal method: ASTM D425-88. The pellets of the coal refuses showed the higher values of the field capacity and the plant-available water than that of kaolin pellet. These results suggest the very low cost process that can utilize the coal refuses and can fabricate the lightweight porous soil conditioner of the very high plant-available water.
Daily solar radiation is essential for water resources planning and environmental impact assessment. However, radiation data is not commonly available in Korea other than in big cities, and there has been no direct measurement for rural areas where water resources planning and environmental impact assessment is usually most needed. In general, missing radiation data is estimated from nearby regional stations within a certain distance, and this study compared two dominant methods (modified Angstrom equation and transmittance interpolation method) at six stations in Nakdong River watershed area. Two methods shows a similar level of accuracy but the transmittance interpolation method is likely to be superior in that there is no need for any measurement element since the modified Angstrom equation require the sunshine hour measurement. This study will contribute to improve water resource and water quality management in Nakdong River watershed.
