  • This paper proposes a new soft switching single stage AC/DC full bridge converter with unit power factor and isolated output. This circuit shows that it is possible to combine the boost converter which is for PFC(Power Factor Correction) and full bridge converter which is for DC/DC converter. A simple auxiliary circuit which includes neither lossy components nor active switches eliminates ringing of secondary side of the transformer. The characteristics of the proposed circuit are investigated and the validity is verified by the simulation results.

  • Small gas turbine engines are used in aircraft as an auxiliary power unit (APU) to supply compressed air to start the main engine and for emergency electricity. When an aircraft is operating in an environment in which sand and dust is present in the ambient air, the engines as well as the APU ingest the sand and dust. This causes erosion of the engine and a degradation in its performance. The present study investigated the effect of sand and dust ingestion on small gas turbine engines. The concentration of sand and dust was $4.4{\times}10^{-5}kg$ per unit kg of air, which follows the specification in MIL-E-8593. The test was conducted for 10 h, and the engine performance before and after the test was compared. In addition, a tear-down inspection was conducted to examine the erosion patterns of sub-components such as the impeller and turbine wheel.

  • The performance test of a centrifugal compressor for APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) which is developed by the collaborative research of KARI and Samsung TechWin has been conducted. The investigated compressor consists of a curved inlet, a centrifugal impeller, a channel diffuser and a plenum chamber. The experiments were carried out in an open-loop centrifugal compressor test rig driven by a turbine. For three different diffusers, overall performance data were obtained at 80%, 90% and 97% of design speed. For the initially designed wedge-type diffuser, test results showed that the compressor was operated at a higher mass flow rate than the design requirement. By reducing the diffuser throat area, the compressor operating range was shifted to lower mass flow rate range. The test result of redesigned wedge-type diffuser showed high pressure loss. To reduce the diffuser loss, diffuser inlet radius was increased and airfoil-type of diffuser was adopted. This airfoil-type diffuser showed reasonal results in terms of design requirement.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to lighten the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) structure of the KAAV (Korea Assault Amphibious Vehicle) through structural analysis. Methods: Commercially-available program (MIDAS.NFX) was used for finite element analysis. Frequency response analysis was performed through linear static and mode analyses to verify the structural stability according to the change of the structural materials. Results: Numerical simulation (linear static, mode and frequency response analyses) results showed that the safety factor of the APU was over 1.5 even under the worst case conditions. The APU made by aluminum structures was expected to be available in the military field, since every requirements in the KDS (Korean Defense Specifications) was fulfilled during the various tests and evaluations. Conclusion: The structural analysis was verified that the structural stability of the APU structure of the KAAV after change of the structural material.

  • Although the APU combustors were developed successfully, it could face many unexpected hardships in an engine or a system operating under the severe environments. But, it is not easy to change the combustion field or combustor structure at the engine/system development stage. So we must suggest practical ways to optimize the value quantitatively by engine test and flow analysis, and verify those by the cyclic test. This paper describes reverse-annular type combustor troubleshooting processes for verifying and settling of the problems and issues occurred in various engine and system operation tests by experiment and analysis.

  • It is very difficult to understand and estimate the heat transfer and flow characteristics in the combustor, which is one of main components in the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), because its flow filed has very complex structure. In this paper, specified is characteristics of injection and flow through different air goles in the liner, which consist of large circular holes film cooling holes, and tangential air swirl holes. The durability of the liner depends on whether the surface of the liner is exposed to the hot gas over 1000 $^{\circ}C$ of a temperature or net. It is proved that the locations of hot spots estimated from the calculation using CFD are matched well with that from the test. In this study, CFD simulations were performed to examine the heat transfer and temperature distributions in and about a liner wall with film cooling on the wall. This computational study is based on the ensemble average continuity, compressible Navier-Stokes, energy, and PDF combustion equations closed by the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with standard wall functions for the gas phase and the Fourier equations for conduction in the solid phase.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the vibration characteristics and develop a mounting which can improve the strength safety factor to replace the high failure rate APU(auxiliary power unit) imported metal mounts with rubber mount that can be domestically produced. For this study, we analyzed in 3 kinds of rubber mounts hardness for the natural frequency to avoid the average excited frequency of the APU. In addition, allowed vibration acceleration of rubber mount confirmed to 90.8 g by adding a strength safety factor. To assure the validity of the design, we measure the vibration acceleration equipped with a metal mount and rubber mount 2 species(Hs 50 and 60). As a result, the proposed design method in this study is reasonable because the rubber mounts is excellent strength safety factor and vibration transmissibility than metal mounts.

  • In the electrode fabrication of unit cell, it was ascertained that electrochemical characteristics were greatly increased with 90 wt.% of BP-20, 5 wt.% of Super P and 5 wt.% of mixed binder [P(VdF-co-HFP) : PVP =7 : 3] The self-discharge of unit cell showed that diffusion process was controlled by the ion concentration difference of initial electrolyte due to the characteristics of Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) charged by ion adsorption in the beginning, but this by current leakage through the double-layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface had a minor effect and voltages of curves were remained constant regardless of electrode material. The electrochemical characteristics of 2.3 V/3,000 F grade EDLC were as follows: 0.35 m of DC-ESR (100 A discharge), 0.14 mof AC-ESR (AC amplitude 100 mV), 2.80 Wh/kg (3.73 Wh/L) of energy density and 4.64 kW /kg (6.19 kW/L) of power density. Power output was compatible with electric vehicle applications, uninterrupted power supply and engine starter, in due consideration of Ragone relations.

  • Korea Utility Helicopter(KUH) is a project to replace the aging helicopter presently being operated by the military with a domestic helicopter. The auxiliary power unit is a device that supplies emergency power to the system by an alternator installed when the main generator fails and the start motor converts the electrical energy of the battery into mechanical rotational energy to rotate the auxiliary power unit engine. With continuing power and operation, defects of the starting motor were found and improvements were carried out to solve it. In the failure mode analysis, the causes of possible defects were classified into 5 categories. Analysis of the 5 factors revealed that the main cause of defects is mechanical wear, which was found to be related to spring pressure. 250 tests were conducted through the theoretically determined pressure and regression analysis was performed with 4 sampling. The results showed that pressure was related to wear rate. In conclusion, early wear and breakage due to wear can be controlled through spring force and test showed the prediction of wear and the validity of the result were confirmed.
