Experimental Study of Strength Degradation according to Fixed Knot Method and Outdoor Exposure Environment of Auxiliary Rope for High Altitude Work (추락 방지용 보조로프의 고정 매듭법과 옥외 노출 환경에 따른 강도저하 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Fall accidents account for the highest accident fatality rate in the construction industry. In addition, wearing and using a safety belt is the most realistic and important preventive measure to reduce fall accidents. Safety belts are protective devices worn by individual workers; they prevent workers from falling and allow for time to rescue the workers. However, the legal standards for safety belts only stipulate the materials, specifications, and strength of parts; there is no provision for an auxiliary rope fixing method to fix the safety belts safely. Due to this reason, workers in industrial sites arbitrarily fix and use the auxiliary rope. Currently, the most used method to fix the auxiliary rope is to tie a knot, which significantly lowers the strength of the material compared to the standard strength. Moreover, many construction sites are located outdoors, so the strength of the materials used in the auxiliary rope is inevitably reduced due to various external environmental conditions. Therefore, to solve this problem, this study was conducted to evaluate the strength of the material of the auxiliary rope for fixing the safety belt and the knot-tying method for the auxiliary rope. In this study, the exposure conditions for the effects of temperature and moisture were set to reflect the characteristics of the construction industry. The results of this study are expected to be used for standards establishment and the safe use of the auxiliary rope for safety belts in actual field applications.

  • Yard cranes are very useful equipments for handling of heavy containers. But rope-driven yard cranes must have a little of sway and skew motion because ropes are passive mechanical device. So many researches have been concentrated on anti-sway algorithm controlling trolley speed. But control algorithm of trolley speed is not practical in windy weather. In this paper, we are going to propose a new structure for anti-sway. This structure uses aux. ropes. The control strategy with auxiliary rope is very useful to sway control of yard crane because rope length is shorter than quay-side container cranes. In this paper, we derive equations of motion of trolley system which have anti-sway controller to use auxiliary rope. And main schemes are introduced and explained briefly.

  • The development of automated container terminal has been a hot issue for recent years. It's very natural because it's very important how many containers, how soon, and how precisely a container terminal can treat. A crane treats a very heavy container, maybe, no less than 20∼40 tons, thus most cranes use ropes to take up and land containers. But rope causes the sway of a container and this phenomenon is not avoided. On the ground of this, in most case how much skillful a driver is may affect the productivity of a yard or quay crane. Thus many researches have been concentrated on the development of the control algorithm for a crane which may be useful and robust enough to drive a crane without any human driver. Authors of this paper also are interested in this kind of research but we have been much more interested for years in the development of a mechanical structure which may cause much less sway than the existing cranes do. In this paper, we may introduce the basic structure of the developed anti-sway system.

  • In general, the swing motion of the crane is controlled and suppressed by activating the trolley motion. In this paper, we suggest a new type of anti-sway control system of the crane. In the proposed control system, a small auxiliary mass(moving-mass) is installed on the spreader and the swing motion is controlled by moving the auxiliary mass. The actuator reaction against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container in order to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. In this paper, we apply the $H_{\infty}$ based control technique to the anti-sway control system design problem. And the experimental result shows that the proposed control system is useful and robust to disturbances like winds and initial sway motion.

  • The sway control problem of the pendulum motion of the container crane hanging on the trolley, which transports containers from the container ship to the truck, is considered in this paper. In the container crane control problem, the main issue is to suppress the residual swing motion of the container at the end of the acceleration, deceleration or the case of that the unexpected disturbance input exists. For this problem, in general, the trolley motion control strategy is introduced and applied to real plants. In this paper, we suggest a new type of swing motion control system for a crane system in which a small auxiliary mass is installed on the spreader. The actuator reacting against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the spreader of the container crane to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. In this paper, we consider that the length of the rope varies is we design the anti-sway control system based on LMI(linear matrix inequality) approach. And, it will be shown that the proposed control strategy is useful and it can be easily applicable to the real world. So, in this study, we investigate usefulness of the proposed anti-sway system and evaluate system performance from simulation and experimental studies.

  • The sway motion control problem of a container hanging on the trolly is considered in the paper. In the container crane control problem, suppressing the residual swing motion of the container at the end of acceleration, deceleration or the case of that the unexpected disturbance input exists is main issue. For this problem, in general, many trolley motion control strategies are introduced and applied. In this paper, we introduce and synthesize a swing motion control system in which a small auxiliary mass is installed on the spreader made by ourselves. In this control system, the actuator reacting against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. Especially, we apply the $H_{\infty}$ based gain-scheduling control technique the anti-sway control system design problem of the controlled plant. In this control system, the controller dynamics are adjusted in real-time according to time-varying plant parameters. And the simulation result shows that the proposed control strategy is shown to be useful to the case of time-varying system and, robust to disturbances like winds and initial sway motion.
