This paper introduces conceptual design of scroll expander-compressor unit for fuel cell. Since air discharged out of the fuel cell stack after reaction has still high pressure energy, some power can be extracted out of it by directing it to pass through an expanding device so that the extracted power can be used to drive an auxiliary compressor. For this purpose, a scroll type expander coupled to a scroll type compressor was designed: orbiting scroll of the expander and that of the compressor were made to share three of common drive pins installed in the mid frame plate, and central cavity in the mid-plate was used as a back pressure chamber to provide axial compliance for both orbiting scrolls. Performance analysis for the expander showed that the shaft power of the expander could reduce the auxiliary power consumption in the fuel cell by about one third at the scroll clearance of $10{\mu}m$.
One of effective utilization method of rice husk is to utilize it as culture material by carbonizing the rice husk. As a second part of a series to investigate the effective and continuous production of carbonized rice husk by a cyclone combustor, a non-slagging vertical cyclone combustor without vortex collector pocket was introduced. Isothermal and mixed firing with LPG and rice husk were undertaken in order to characterize the system. Inert rice husk was used during the isothermal test to find mass of rice husk collected. It was impossible to ignite rice husk itself over the experimental conditions considered in this experiment. Cyclone combustor was operated at temperatures of 1,273~1,473K. Detailed combustion data were obtained from a pilot unit with the air flow rate of 70m$^3$/h and rice husk feed of 2kg. The equivalence ratio ranged from 0.66 to 3.48. The auxiliary gas flow rate was varied from 3.22 to 12.86$\ell$/min. The weight reduction, pH and particle size distribution of carbonized rice husk were measured to evaluate the quality of carbonized rice husk. An analysis of exhaust gas emission was conducted to characterize the combustor. The required carbonized rice husk could be obtained at equivalence ratio of 1.68~2.17, combustor temperature of 1,273~1,373K and auxiliary gas flow rate of 3.22~6.43$\ell$/min. A method to reduce CO emissions should be employed.

Recently, the condensation and mold problems of apartment buildings has been growing due to high insulation and high air-tightness performance for energy saving. Most of all, occupants in residential buildings has suffered from property damages due to the condensation and mold of built-in furniture. Condensation at built-in furniture were generally found in winter at the of furniture's back panels, adjacent surfaces of wall, floor and ceiling. The aim of paper is to analyze the characteristics of adjacent area around built-in furniture's condensation problem and the thermal environment around the built-in furniture in winter through the field measurements at apartment buildings. In this research, the thermal conditions and surface temperature around the built-in furniture were measured during winter season. In this research, we analyzed thermal conditions for built-in furniture which were applied and not applied auxiliary heating device. In results, it is important to consider increasing surface temperature for using heater and decreasing absolute humidity due to the occupants' behavior around built-in furniture for preventing condensation.
This paper proposes the hybrid fuel cell system that can solve disadvantages of existing fuel cell system and ensure high reliability and high stability. The system consists of PEM fuel cell, Ni-MH battery and power management system. In this system, when the power provided from the fuel cell is higher than the load power, the extra energy may be used to charge the Ni-MH battery. When the fuel cell can not provide enough energy to the load, the shortage of energy will be supplied by the Ni-MH battery. Experimental results show that the output voltage is regulated well during load variations. Also, high system efficiency is achieved.

Noise reduction is an important issue in auxiliary power unit(APU) of tracking equipments for using military. In this study, we designed and tested reduction methods of structure borne noise and airborne source noise at the auxiliary power unit. From the bench test results, it is found that the effect of noise reduction is about 22 dB(A) if the silencer is redesigned, which is the rescue structure. However, the influence of noise reduction by air is insufficient. In addition, it is confirmed that the effect of noise reduction is excellent when structure borne noise reduction is applied to the vehicle. We expected that the test results of this study are used as basic data to reduce the noise of other tracking equipment developed later.

The leakage characteristic is an important factor in power plant. However, most of power plant have efficiency problem which is occurred leaking between high pressure steam turbine axle and stator. The labyrinth seal which is used between the main turbine axle and stator in the power plant. Because it is able to be non-contact seal and it is minimize clearance to decrease the leakage. But its actual system is too huge to experiment. Therefore, most steam turbine seal performance tests were conducted by air similarity test. This paper described a test facility and program for air similarity test of high pressure steam turbine seal. A test facility has been designed and built to evaluate leakage verification of labyrinth seal. The test facility consist of air compressor, anti-swirl labyrinth seal for 1/3 air similarity model, pressure transducer, air flow measure system, instrumentation and auxiliary system. For evaluation of steam turbine seal performance, the air similarity test of labyrinth seal leakage verification was conducted and we compared experiment data and analysis result.

This study is to compare energy consumption of air-source, ground-source and dual-source heat pump systems during intermediate season using dynamic simulation. Ground-source heat pump has higher COP than that of air-source but requires additional power consumption of auxiliary equipment such as circulation pump. During intermediate season when the outdoor air temperature is favorable, total COP of air-source heat pump may be greater than that of ground-source when circulation pump power consumption is included. Dual-source heat pump which selects the more favorable heat source is compared with air-source only and ground-source only heat pumps for total power consumption. Results show that power consumption of dual-source heat pump is lower than that of ground-source only by 0.73%.

The air-cooled passive decay heat removal system (APDHR) was proposed to provide the ultimate heat sink for non-LOCA accidents. The APDHR is a modified one of Passive Auxiliary Feed-water system (PAFS) installed in APR+. The PAFS has a heat exchanger in the Passive Condensate Cooling Tank (PCCT) and can remove decay heat for 8 h. After that, the heat transfer rate through the PAFS drastically decreases because the heat transfer condition changes from water to air. The APDHR with a vertical heat exchanger in PCCT will be able to remove the decay heat by air if it has sufficient natural convection in PCCT. We conducted the thermal-hydraulic simulation by the MARS code to investigate the behavior of the APR + selected as a reference plant for the simulation. The simulation contains two phases based on water depletion: the early phase and the late phase. In the early phase, the volume of water in PCCT was determined to avoid the water depletion in three days after shutdown. In the late phase, when the number of the HXs is greater than 4089 per PCCT, the MARS simulation confirmed the long-term cooling by air is possible under extended Station Blackout (SBO).

Small gas turbine engines are used in aircraft as an auxiliary power unit (APU) to supply compressed air to start the main engine and for emergency electricity. When an aircraft is operating in an environment in which sand and dust is present in the ambient air, the engines as well as the APU ingest the sand and dust. This causes erosion of the engine and a degradation in its performance. The present study investigated the effect of sand and dust ingestion on small gas turbine engines. The concentration of sand and dust was $4.4{\times}10^{-5}kg$ per unit kg of air, which follows the specification in MIL-E-8593. The test was conducted for 10 h, and the engine performance before and after the test was compared. In addition, a tear-down inspection was conducted to examine the erosion patterns of sub-components such as the impeller and turbine wheel.

To improve heating performance of the heat pump in winter season, refrigerant heating device was applied to conventional heat pump. The refrigerant heating device operates at the heating capacity does not enough to the heating load requirement of the conditioning space. When the discharge air temperature of the indoor heat exchanger goes down to below $40^{\circ}C$ which is criterion for comfort of the occupants in the conditioning space, the system also starts. The refrigerant heating system has new concept of auxiliary heating device for heat pump in winter. In this study, the system performance was analyzed through experiments and parametric study was conducted to improve the COP and control strategies.
