  • By changing the bulky monolithic services architecture to a microservices-based architecture, industries are managing the rising complexity of Autonomous Vehicles. However, the underlying communication mechanisms for the utilization and distribution of these microservices are incapable of fulfilling the requirements of the futuristic AV, because of the stringent latency requirements along with intermittent and short-lived connectivity issues. This paper proposes to tackle these challenges by employing the revolutionary information-centric networking (ICN) paradigm as an underlying communication architecture. This paper argues that a microservice approach to building autonomous vehicle systems should utilize ICN to achieve effective service utilization, efficient distribution, and uniform service discovery. This research claims that the vision of an information-centric microservices will help to focus on research that can fill in current communication gaps preventing more effective, and lightweight autonomous vehicle services and communication protocols.

  • Currently, the Republic of Korea is facing the problem of a decrease in military service resources due to the demographic cliff, and is pursuing military restructuring and changes in the military force structure in order to respond to this. In this situation, the Army is pushing forward the deployment of a drone-bot combat system that will lead the future battlefield. The battlefield of the future will be changed into an integrated battlefield concept that combines command and control, surveillance and reconnaissance, and precision strike. According to these changes, unmanned combat system, including dronebots, will be widely applied to combat situations that are high risk and difficult for humans to perform in actual combat. In this paper, as one of the countermeasures to these changes, autonomous behavior software with a BDI architecture-based decision-making system was developed. The autonomous behavior software applied a framework structure to improve applicability to multiple models. Its function was verified in a PC-based environment by assuming that the target UAV is a battalion-level surveillance and reconnaissance UAV.

  • This paper deals with the global path planning problem for AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) in a tidal current field. The previous researches in the field were unsuccessful at simultaneously addressing the two issues of obstacle avoidance and tidal current-based optimization. The use of a genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper to move past this limitation and solve both issues at once. Simulation results showed that the genetic algorithm could be applied to generate an optimal path in the field of a tidal current with multiple obstacles.

  • This paper proposes a novel safety autonomous platform (SAP) architecture that can automatically and precisely manage on-site safety through ensemble artificial intelligence models generated from video information, worker's biometric information, and the safety rule to estimate the risk index. We practically designed the proposed SAP architecture by the Hadoop ecosystem with Kafka/NiFi, Spark/Hive, Hue, ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana), Ansible, etc., and confirmed that it worked well with safety mobility gateways for providing various safety applications.

  • This paper presents a conceptual design for a plant-wide autonomous operation system that uses artificial intelligence techniques. The autonomous operation system has the power and ability to perform the control functions needed for the emergency operation of a nuclear power plant (NPP) with reduced operator intervention. This paper discusses the emergency operation and level of automation in an NPP and presents the design requirements for an autonomous emergency operation system (A-EOS). Then, an architecture that consists of several modules is proposed, with descriptions of the functions. Finally, this paper introduces a prototype of the suggested autonomous system that integrates the authors' previous works.

  • Unmanned ground vehicles have important military, reconnaissance, and materials handling application. Many of these applications require the UGVs to move at high speeds through uneven, natural terrain with various compositions and physical parameters. This paper presents a framework for high speed autonomous navigation based on the integrated real time traversability. Specifically, the proposed system performs real-time dynamic simulation and calculate maximum traversing velocity guaranteeing safe motion over rough terrain. The architecture of autonomous navigation is firstly presented for high-speed autonomous navigation. Then, the integrated real time traversability, which is composed of initial velocity profiling step, dynamic analysis step, road classification step and stable velocity profiling step, is introduced. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the method for a $6{\times}6$ autonomous vehicle moving on flat terrain with bump.

  • Holonic manufacturing system is a new approachto the organization and architecture of decentralized, autonomous and cooperative manufacturing system. The new paradigm combines the concepts of hierarchical systems and the integration of autonomous elements in distributed system. Today's scheduling and control techniques are mostly based on a centralized structure. Only little work has been done on scheduling and control of decentralized, autonomous and cooperative manufacturing system. This paper proposes a new approach IPM(Interactive Prediction Method) for scheduling and control of holonic manufacturing system.

  • In various industrial sites, piping systems play an essential role in stable fluid supply and pressure maintenance. However, these systems are constantly exposed to risks of earthquakes, explosions, fires, and leaks, which can result in casualties or serious economic losses. With rapid advancements in the industry, different-sized piping systems have been launched; however, there are not enough maintenance personnel for troubleshooting and responding to situations where damages occur to piping systems. This increases the need for introducing autonomous damage management systems. In this study, a lab-based piping system was designed and manufactured by referring to the piping system of a naval ship to analyze the effectiveness of autonomous damage management systems. By using this testbed, a representative algorithm, the hydraulic resistance control algorithm, was realized and examinedIn addition, the difference between the averaged pressure and normalized pressure was introduced to improve the performance of the existing algorithm, which faces some limitations with regard to sensor noise and back pressure from the rupture-simulated pipeline part.

  • In the 21st century, the rapid development of automation and artificial intelligence technologies is driving innovative changes in various industrial sectors. In the transportation industry, this is evident with the commercialization of autonomous vehicles. Moreover research into autonomous navigation technologies is actively underway in the aviation and maritime sectors. Consequently, for the practical implementation of autonomous ships, an effective collision avoidance algorithm has become a crucial element. Therefore, this study proposes a collision avoidance algorithm based on the Obstacle Zone by Target(OZT), which visually represents areas with a high likelihood of collisions with other ships or obstacles. The A-star algorithm was utilized to represent obstacles on a grid and assess collision risks. Subsequently, a collision avoidance algorithm was developed that performs fuzzy control based on calculated waypoints, allowing the vessel to return to its original course after avoiding the collision. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm was verified through collision avoidance simulations in various encounter scenarios.
