  • This study conducts the flow analysis on the basis of the impeller RPM of water measuring valve and differential pressure at valve inlet and outlet. The software used for the flow analysis is STAR-CCM+. In terms of the structure of the measuring valve, it has an impeller installed inside, and a metering chamber has inlet and outlet holes. The flow analysis on the water measuring valve drew the following conclusions: The flow rate and flow coefficient distribution according to the impeller RPM and differential pressure were on the linear increase. Regarding the flow field in the valve, the increased differential pressure had the highest velocity distribution, and complex flow field was generated in the measuring chamber. In particular, since the path between the inlet and outlet holes in the measuring chamber and the valve body was narrow, there was a section that had flow field interference. Given that, it showed the feature of the valve used for water measuring on the basis of the impeller RPM.

  • This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for the journal bearings on a stripped-down single-cylinder engine during start-up and coast-down by motoring. A journal bearing is in the mixed elastohydrodynamic (EHL) lubrication region when the shaft speed is less than the corresponding lift-off speed. Below the lift-off speed, a wear scar can form on bearing surfaces. In part 1 of this paper, we develop the appropriate formulations and the calculation procedure for the analysis. Specifically, we formulate an equation for modified film thickness in a journal bearing considering the additional wear volume. In order to obtain the modified specific wear rate induced by the modified Archard’s wear coefficient, we utilized the extended non-dimensional diagram for the specific wear rate, k, the fractional film defect coefficient, Ψ and the asperity load sharing factor, γ2. This asperity load sharing factor is newly calculated by setting the Zhao-Maietta-Chang (ZMC) asperity contact pressure equation coupled with the central film thickness equation derived by using the ZMC asperity contact model equal to the modified central contact pressure derived by using the central (or maximum) contact pressure at the dry rough line-contact configuration. We can use the procedure introduced in this paper to determine the lifetime (or longterm) linear wear in radial journal bearings that is a result of repeated stop-start cycles.

  • Heat exchanger tube array in a heat recovery steam generator is exposed to the hot exhaust gas flow and it could cause the flow induced vibration, which could damage the heat exchanger tube array. It is needed to establish the characteristics of flow induced vibration in the tube array for the structural safe operation of the heat exchanger. Several researches for the flow induced vibration of typical heat exchangers had been conducted and the nondimensional PSD(Power Spectral Density) function with the Strouhal number, fD/U, had been derived by experimental method. The present study examined the results of the previous experimental researches for the nondimensional PSD characteristics by CFD analysis and the basis for the application of flow induced vibration to the heat recovery steam generator tube array would be prepared from the present CFD analysis. For the previous mentioned purpose, the present CFD analysis introduced circular cylinder tube array and calculated with the unsteady laminar flow for the tube array. The characteristics of lift fluctuation over the cylinder tube array was investigated. The derived nondimensional PSD was compared with the results of the previous experimental researches and the characteristics of lift PSD for circular cylinder tube array was established from the present CFD study.

  • Flow induced vibration in a heat exchanger may cause damage to piping. The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of vortex shedding behavior through the circular tube banks at several tube locations, No.1, No. 10, and No. 19, with respect to time when the flow velocity of the inlet is constantly and periodically fluctuating.(60) The time characteristics of lift and the PSD characteristics were also investigated. In the case of periodic inlet flow velocity, strong vortex occurred at some time and after that time, a weak vortex was generated through the tube banks simultaneously. In the case of constant inlet flow velocity, the lift fluctuating frequency was 37.25Hz and that at the No. 19 tube was 18.63Hz and near 50Hz. In the case of periodic inlet flow velocity, the lift fluctuating frequency was 37.25Hz and 18.63Hz. The lift fluctuating frequency at No. 19 tube was observed broadly from 20Hz and 50Hz.

  • The flow-induced vibration in a heat exchanger may cause the damage to piping. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the flow induced vibration characteristics for the structural stability of a heat exchanger. The purpose of this study was to compare the generation, development, and separation characteristics of a vortex around a circular tube with respect to time when the flow velocity of the inlet was fluctuating constantly and periodically. The time characteristics of lift and drag and the PSD characteristics were also investigated. In the case of a constant inlet flow velocity, the well-known Kalman vorticity distribution was shown. The vortex generation, growth, and separation were also observed alternately at the upper and lower sides of the tube. In the case of periodic inlet flow velocity, the vortex occurred simultaneously in the upper and lower sides of the tube. In the case of constant inlet flow velocity, the magnitude of the lift PSD was 500 times larger than that of drag. The frequency was 31.15 Hz and that of drag was doubled at 62.3 Hz. In case of a periodic inlet flow velocity, the PSD of the drag was approximately 500 times larger than that of lift. The frequency was 15.57 Hz, which was the same as the inlet-flow velocity frequency. In addition, the frequency of lift was 31.15 Hz, which was the same Karman vortex frequency.

  • Ball reducer (HERB Drive: High Efficient Wave Rolling Ball Drive) with waved grooves has many advantages over other types of reducers for high-reduction ratio, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in contact behaviors. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer ring, and the dynamic contact behaviors of elastohydodynamic lubrication(EHL) with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer ring for the critical endurance lift, the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some intervals of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly. It is expected that changing the contact direction causes undesirable endurance performance because EHL film frequently col lapse at the moment of velocity reversal. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very typical in many contact phenomena.

  • In this paper, numerical analysis is used to find the effects of inclination of rear end on flow characteristic around an automobile. The reference slant angle of rear end is 28.6$^{\circ}$, the slant angle of rear end is decreased to 24$^{\circ}$, 26.6$^{\circ}$ and also increased to 31.6$^{\circ}$, 36.4$^{\circ}$. The 3-D incompressible Navier-Stockes equations are solved by the iterative time marching scheme. The computed surface pressure coefficients were compared with experimental results and a good agreement has been achieved. The A- and C-pillar vortex and other flow phenomena around the ground vehicle are evidently shown. The variation of aerodynamic coefficients of drag, lift with respect to inclination angle of rear end are systematically studied. The flow characteristic on the automobile surface with respect to change of inclination of rear end have been also studied.

  • A forklift is used to lift materials above a height of 2 m. The width of the fork determines the weight of the material it can carry. In this paper, three models of fractured forklifts were analyzed to determine if the fracture was caused by load fatigue due to the width of the fork. The position of the fork was fixed on each model, and a 2.5 ton load was placed at the upper part of the fork. The width distances on each of three models were 500 mm, 750 mm and 1000 mm, and the maximum equivalent stresses were 237.5MPa, 227.62MPa and 230.99MPa, respectively. This analysis demonstrated that as the load increased with use of the wider fork, the fatigue life remained to be nearly equivalent irrespective of fork width among all three models. The results of this study contribute to the durability and safety design of forklifts.
