O-rings in automotive engines are important components such as a coolant pipe, engine oil circulating lines and fuel injector for sealing that makes efficient performance of the engine. Life cycle of O-rings is effected in environments of the O-ring seal, like that applied pressure, working temperature, precompressed ratio and materials. It is related in extrusion, expansion and fatigue failure of O-rings. In this paper, an pressurized, compressed elastomeric O-ring inserted into a rectangular groove is analysed numerically using the nonlinear finite element method. The calculated FEM results showed that extrusion ratio and contact stress are strongly related to the gap clearance and edge radius of the groove.

A water emulsion fuel can be used to reduce soot and NOx emissions simultaneously because it has a lower combustion temperature and better fuel atomization owing to the evaporative latent heat and microexplosion of water. Moreover, it can be used without making special modifications to conventional diesel engines. Therefore, this fuel has attracted considerable research attention. In addition, lower-grade fuels are being considered for use in conventional engines because of an increase in oil prices. In this study, we investigated the combustion and exhaust characteristics of MDO (marine diesel oil), which has a lower grade than common diesel oil, and ME (MDO water emulsion) under various test conditions in an automotive diesel engine.

The operating torque and tribological characteristics of a cam/tappet system of an I.C. engine have an important effect on the engine efficiency. More power is lost for higher operation torque which is affected by the friction of a cam/tappet system. In this work experimental investigation of the torque behavior of a cam/tappet system was conducted to get tribological characteristics. Specifically, the torque was measured with respect to oil temperature and camshaft speed. The torque decreased with increasing camshaft speed because of decreasing friction coefficient but was hardly affected by the oil temperature. Also, the torque was the largest near the cam nose region.
In this study, using the governing equations for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water dispersed within engine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a turbocharger. The governing equations are the general equations being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing on a turbocharger lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluids, water dispersed within engine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are showed that the friction force and bearing load capacity decrease as increasing the volume percent of water.
In this study, several sensor parts used to obtain better signal stability are designed, a separate control circuit for the sensor is developed, and the results obtained using this control circuit are analyzed. The capacitances of the whole sensor system are measured using the control circuit connected to an improved flexible printed circuit board and an asymmetric dual sensor coated with a ceramic material. To realize good discrimination for a small change in the measured capacitance as the engine oil deteriorates, a commercial application-specific integrated circuit is installed on the control circuit as a capacitance-to-digital converter. The absolute error of a measured signal is found to be approximately ${\pm}4fF$.

Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke diesel engine is of great economic importance. A motor-driven cylinder lubricator for Sulzer RT-flex large two-stroke diesel engines developed by authors is in need of modifying the lubricating system to lubricate cylinder parts optimally by an electronically controlled quill device according to changes of engine load and revolution speed. In order to apply the developed accumulating distributor to an integrated cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled system as the third research stage, the lubricating system is improved in the electronically controlled quill device with a solenoid valve. In this study, the effects of lubricator revolution speed, driving pressure and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate, maximum discharge and delivery pressures are experimentally investigated by using the integrated cylinder lubricator system with an accumulated distribution by the electronic control. It is found that the oil feed rate of the developed integral cylinder lubricator system is less than that of the motor-driven cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled quill system equipped with an accumulating distributor because of the decrease of delivery speed by increasing the maximum delivery pressure in the same experimental condition.

A typical cooling system of an engine relies on a water pump that circulates the coolant through the system. The pump is typically driven by the crankshaft through a mechanical link with engine starting. In order to reduce the friction and warm-up time of an engine, the clutch-type water pump (CWP) was applied in 2.0 liter diesel vehicle. The clutch-type water pump can force cooling water to supply into an engine by the operation of an electromagnetic clutch equipped as the inner part of pump system. The onset of CWP is decided by temperature of cooling water and engine oil. And, the control logic for an optimal operation of the clutch-type water pump was developed and applied in engine and vehicle tests. In this study, the warm-up time was measured with the conventional water pump and clutch-type water pump in engine tests. And the emission and the fuel consumption were evaluated under NEDC mode in vehicle tests. Also, tests were carried out for the various temperature conditions starting the operation of CWP. From the results of the study, the application of CWP can improve the fuel consumption and $CO_2$ reduction by about 3%.

To evaluate the durability of direct injection diesel engine using biodiesel fuel, a small D. I. diesel engine was operated on a blend(BDF 20) of 20% biodiesel fuel and 80% diesel fuel for 200 hours. Engine dynamometer test was performed at a load of 90% and a speed of 1900 rpm to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. Engine performance parameters and exhaust emissions were sampled at 1 hour interval for analysis. The combustion maximum pressure and the crank angle at this maximum pressure as a combustion variation factor were considered to study the combustion characteristics of BDF 20 in diesel engine during durability test. As the results, the standard deviations and errors of combustion variation factors on BDF 20 were very little and combustion characteristics were very stable during the durability test. BDF 20 resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions with special increase of nitrogen oxides compared to diesel fuel. There was no also unusual change in engine oil composition from using BDF 20. Most of engine parts were clean and showed little wear, but soots were detected around the hole of fuel injector when BDF 20 was used in direct injection diesel engine for 200 hours.

Because of high oil prices and emission gas problems, many governments tighten regulation of fuel economy and emission gas. For Passenger car, there are many researches for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and they are being manufactured. On the other hand, there are few researches for plug-in hybrid electric bus that is heavy commercial vehicle. In this study, analysis of fuel economy for series plug-in hybrid electric bus according to engine operation strategy based on simulation is conducted. Forward simulator is developed using Autonomie. Engine operation strategies consist on constant engine operation strategy and engine on/off operation strategy. Considering the engine operation strategy, results of vehicle speed, engine operating points and fuel economy are obtained and analyzed. As a result, engine on/off operation strategy has more advantage than constant engine operation strategy in terms of fuel economy.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the wear volumes of engine journal bearings operating at variable angular velocity of a shaft in the beginning of firing start-up cycle. To do this, first we find the potential region of wear scar on engine journal bearings where the applied bearing load and crank shaft velocity are variable. The potential wear regions are discovered by finding minimum oil film thickness at every crank angle existing below most oil film thickness scaring wear (MOFTSW) obtained based on the concept of the centerline average surface roughness. Then we calculate the wear volume from the wear depth and two wear angles decided by the magnitude of each film thickness lower than MOFTSW at every crank angle. The results show that the expected wear region is located at a few bearing angles after and/or behind the upper center of a big-end bearing and the lower center of a main bearing. And the real wear region is similar to the estimated wear region. Further we find that the wear scar on an engine journal bearing may occur at re-starting time after switch-off of a start motor especially under the condition of high oil temperature.
