Environmental Monitoring Using Comfort Sensing System

  • This research is about a comfort sensing system for human environmental monitoring using a one-bodied humidity and temperature sensor and an air flow sensor. The thermal comfort that a human being feels in indoor environment has been known to be influenced mostly by six parameters, i.e. air temperature, radiation, air flow, humidity, activity level and clothing thermal resistance. Considering an environmental monitoring, we have designed and fabricated a one-bodied humidity and temperature sensor and an air flow sensor that detect air relative humidity, temperature and air flow in human environment using surface micromachining technologies. Micro-controller calculates a PMV (predicted mean vote) and CSV (comfort sensing vote) with sensing signals and display a PMV on LCD (liquid crystal display) for human comfort on indoor climate. Our work has demonstrated that a comfort sensing system can provide an effective means of measuring and monitoring the indoor comfort sensing index of a human being. Experimental results with simulated environment clearly suggest that our comfort sensing system can be used in many applications such as air conditioning system, feedback controlling in automobile, home and hospital etc..

  • A dual micro gas sensor array was fabricated using nano sized $SnO_2$ thin films which had good sensitivities to CO and combustible gases, or $H_2S$ gas for air quality sensors in automobile. The already existed air quality sensor detects oxidizing gases and reducing gases, the air quality sensor(AQS), located near the fresh air inlet detected the harmful gases, the fresh air inlet door/ventilation flap was closed to reduce the amount of pollution entering the vehicle cabin through HVAC(heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system. In this study, to make $SnO_2$ thin film AQS sensor, thin tin metal layer between 1000 and $2000{\AA}$ thick was oxidized between 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ by thermal oxidation. The gas sensing layers such as $SnO_2$, $SnO_2$(pt) and $SnO_2$(+CuO) were patterned by metal shadow mask for simple fabrication process on the silicon substrate. The micro gas sensors with $SnO_2$(+Pt) and $SnO_2$(CuO) showed good selectivity to CO gas among reducing gases and good sensitivity to $H_2S$ that is main component of bad odor, separately.

주덕트의 단면적 변화가 분지덕트의 유량분배에 미치는 영향 (Effect of a Variation of a Main Duct Area on Flow Distribution of Each Branch)

  • With the development of a living standard, the importance of indoor air conditioning system in all kinds of buildings and vehicles has increased. A lot of researches on energy losses in a duct and various kinds of flow pattern in branches or junctions have been carried out over many years, because the primary object of a duct system used in HVAC is to provide equal flow rate in the interior of each room by minimizing pressure drop. In this study, to get equal flow distribution in each branch, a blockage is applied to the rectangular duct system. The flow analysis for flow distribution of a rectangular duct with two branches was performed by CFD. By using SIMPLE algorithm and finite volume method, flow analysis is performed in the case of 3-D, incompressible, turbulent flow. Also, the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and wall function method were used for analysis of turbulent fluid flow. The distribution diagrams of static pressure, velocity vector, turbulent energy and kinetic energy in accordance with variation of Reynolds number and blockages location in a rectangular duct show that flow distribution at duct outlets is improved by a blockage. In this rectangular duct system, mean velocity and flow rate distribution in two branch outlets are nearly constant regardless of variation of Reynolds number, and a flow pattern of the internal duct has a same tendency as well.

자동차용 리시버/건조기 일체형 응축기의 성능해석 (Performance Analysis of Integral Receiver/Dryer Condenser for Automobile)

  • The important problems from the point of view of preventing global warming are to save the power consumption of automotive air-conditioning systems and reduce the refrigerant amount filled. To achieve such requirements, integral receiver/dryer (R/D) condensers were developed recently. Typical integral R/D condensers have extra headers that play the role of R/D. Except an extra header and somewhat complex tube array resulting from the extra header, the most integral R/D condensers have almost the same specification that tube has multi channels, fin has louvers, flow in tube is parallel, etc. When integral condensers are applied, it is known that the refrigerating effect increases, resulting from the increase of subcooling degree in condenser, and the refrigerant amount used saves. In spite of several merits, integral condensers have not been applied a lot. That is why there is an uncertainty in performance, using integral condensers. The objective of this study is to theoretically optimize the tube array in an integral R/D condenser that is really being applied to some vehicles. The tube array has a great effect on the performance of the integral condenser as well as common ones. Through computer simulation, we could see that the tube array, 14-6-3-5-3-4, in the same condenser was the best, comparing heat release rate, pressure drop, etc. to the real array, 17-5-3-3-2-5. It should be noted that the optimization is based on the condenser performance only.

  • 자동차를 이용하는 시간이 늘어남에 따라 자동차 실내의 온열쾌적성에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있다. 그러나 아직까진 실제 자동차 중에서 공조시스템의 냉방성능은 자동차 제조사별로 온열쾌적성 지표를 통해 평가되지 않고, 실내의 공기 속도와 온도 등 열환경 기준에 의해 평가되고 있다. 또한 차 실내의 온열쾌적성을 수치해석으로 평가하는 경우 타당한 결과를 도출할 수 있는 수치기법에 대한 기준이 확립되지 않은 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 외부 열원을 모사하기 위하여 태양광선 추적모델을 사용하고, 공조시스템 작동 후 20 분까지 다양한 매개변수(공조시스템의 작동모드와 작동풍량, 인체모델 탑승조건)에 대한 자동차 실내의 온열쾌적성 평가를 수행하였다. 이를 통해 자동차 실내의 온열쾌적성 지표를 예측할 수 있는 평가모델을 도출하였다.

자동차 열부하의 계산 (A Study on the Heat Load Transferred to a Passenger Vehicle)

  • The computer simulation program that calculates the transient heat load transferred to a passenger vehicle has been developed. Method for modeling mathematically various kinds of the heat load was presented and the derived equations were solved numerically. To find out the accuracy of the simulation program, the correlation of experimental and analytical results was demonstrated. By using this program, the typical characteristics about temperature distribution and instantaneous or of vehicle body color, material of glass, air-conditioning capacity, driving direction, and speed. Under a steady-state condition, the ratios of the heat load, resulting form vehicle body, glass, and interior part, were 35%, 29%, and 36%, respectively.

승합차량용 공조 팬의 개발 (Development of an Air-conditioning Fan for a Van)

  • 본 연구는 차량용 Air-conditioner 에 사용되고 있는 직교류형 팬의 개발에 관한 것이다. 가정용으로 사용되는 직교류형 팬을 차량용으로 전환하기 위해서는 날개의 길이, 형상 등을 새로이 설계해야 하며, 또한 성능이 충분히 유지되어야 한다. 이를 해결하기 위해 날개형상 설계, 사출성형 해석 그리고 시제품에 대한 성능평가 실험이 수행되었다. 개발의 주요 방법론은 성능을 만족시키는 최적의 날개형상을 구하고 이를 제작하기 위한 사출조건을 찾는 것으로 2년여에 걸쳐 개발이 성공적으로 완료되었다.

차내 환기구 형상변화에 대한 연구 (A Study ono the Type-Change of Automotive Register)

  • Nowadays since the automobile is regarded as the third living space, comfortable conditions are required in the passenger compartment. The customer's concern on air-conditioning/heating, ventilation and demisting/defrosting performances has been much increased. Both ventilation and demisting /defrosting performances are directly influenced by register location, shape of regist guide vane, ventilation flow rate, air distribution , and air circulation pattern. Diffuse plume of air from the register is desirable not only to maintain comfort when the comfort when the comfortable condition has been satisfied but to improve demisting /defrosting performance. In this study, experimental and numerical investigation about the flow field of six different register vane types were carried out , respectively. The numerical analysis, based upon the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model , was applied to the air flow field. The results show that the shape of register guide vane should be considered as an important design paramter.

High Performance Switched Reluctance Motor Drive for Automobiles using C-dump Converters

  • Small electric motors in an automobile perform various tasks such as engine cooling, pumping, and in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. At present, most of dc motors are supplied by 12V or 24V batteries. However, DC motors surfer from lack of efficiency, low life cycles and unreliability. Therefore, there is a growing interest in substituting DC motors for advanced AC motors including switched reluctance motors. Although there are several other forms SRM converters, they are either unsatisfactory to the control performance or unsuitable for the 12V-battery powered 3-phase SRM drives. Taking into account the requirement for effective operation and simplicity structure of converter in the limited internal environment of automobiles, the author inclines toward selecting the modified C-dump converter as well as the energy efficient C-dump converter. This is so that more economical and efficient converter topology in automobile industries can be utilized. This paper describes the foundation for the design and development of a 12V-250W-3000rpm SRM drives for automobiles. Furthermore, complete circuit, computer simulation and experiment results are presented to verify the performance of the C-dump converters.

내부열교환기와 TXV를 적용한 자동차용 공조시스템의 성능에 관한 수치적 연구 (Simulation on the performance of an automobile climate control system with Internal heat exchanger and TXV)

  • 최근에 지구온난화 문제로 인하여 자동차 공조시스템은 GWP 지수가 높은 R134a 냉매를 대체할 수 있는 대체 냉매를 적용하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 R1234yf 냉매를 사용하여 내부열교환기와 가면용량형 팽창밸브인 TXV를 적용한 자동차 공조시스템의 성능특성을 해석하였다. 상용 소프트웨어인 Amesim을 이용하여 주요 부품인 압축기, 응축기, 팽창장치, 증발기와 내부열교환기를 모델링을 하여 외기온도와 응축기 휜 피치 변화에 따른 냉동사이클 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 외기온도가 30℃에서 40℃로 증가함에 따라 시스템의 냉방용량은 3.1% 감소하고, 압축기 소비동력은 17.1% 증가하였다. 또한, 응축기의 휜 피치를 0.8 mm에서 1.4 mm로 증가시키면서, 사이클 성능특성을 해석하였다. 휜 피치가 1.0 mm 클 경우에 응축기의 방열량은 감소하였고, COP는 5.9% 까지 감소하였다. 응축기 휜 피치가 1.0 mm 보다 작은 0.8 mm에서는 시스템 성능에 큰 변화가 없어 휜 피치 1.0 mm에서 최적의 성능을 나타내는 것으로 분석되었다.
