Preliminary design of a production automation framework for a pyroprocessing facility

  • Pyroprocessing technology has been regarded as a promising solution for recycling spent fuel in nuclear power plants. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has been studying the current status of equipment and facilities for pyroprocessing and found that existing facilities are manually operated; therefore, their applications have been limited to laboratory scale because of low productivity and safety concerns. To extend the pyroprocessing technology to a commercial scale, the facility, including all the processing equipment and the material-handling devices, should be enhanced in view of automation. In an automated pyroprocessing facility, a supervised control system is needed to handle and manage material flow and associated operations. This article provides a preliminary design of the supervising system for pyroprocessing. In particular, a manufacturing execution system intended for an automated pyroprocessing facility, named Pyroprocessing Execution System, is proposed, by which the overall production process is automated via systematic collaboration with a planning system and a control system. Moreover, a simulation-based prototype system is presented to illustrate the operability of the proposed Pyroprocessing Execution System, and a simulation study to demonstrate the interoperability of the material-handling equipment with processing equipment is also provided.

  • This paper outlines opportunities and challenges in the Implementation of BPEL based WFMS(Work Flow Management System) for the MES(Manufacturing Execution Systems) level in semiconductor manufacturing. At present, the most MES that are composed of several hundreds of applications in semiconductor wafer fabrication shop have the same problems as others about flexibility and adaptability. When a plant has to produce new product mix, remodel the manufacturing execution process, or replace obsolete equipments, the principal road blocks for responding to new manufacturing environment are inflexible communication infrastructure among the manufacturing process components and the difficulty in porting existing application software to new configurations. In this paper, the issues about BPEL standard, used for the flexibility of Workflow Management System, are presented. We introduce the integrated development framework named nanoFlow which is optimized for developing the BPEL based WFMS application for automated manufacturing system. We describe a WFMS implemented with using nanoFlow framework, review and evaluate the system in terms of flexibility and adaptability.

  • In this study, we propose a shared storage system which is more efficient policy than MIS(Mixed Intermediate Storage) policy for relatively rare storage system and can be called CIS(Common Intermediate Storage) policy. Using this strategy, we develop a new completion time algorithm and apply it to two kinds of optimal or near optimal scheduling method; combinatorial search and simulated annealing method. We also extend this strategy to other storage policy, for example MIS policy, with PLC(Programmable Logic Controller) logic and on/off action of electronic valves. It thus can be accepted as a basic form of FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) for operating various storage policies. Finally we suggest the interlocking block to compansate for the shortcoming of CIS policy, i.e, complication of operation and safety, resulting in a basic batch process automation mode.

  • 디스플레이 분야에 스마트 팩토리란 작업 자동화 뿐만 아니라 기존의 공정관리, 이동설비, 공정이상, 결함 분류 등에 AI/BIG DATA 기술을 이용한 보다 효율적인 디스플레이 제조를 의미한다. 과거 디스플레이 제조 과정에서 불량이 나오면 결함 분류, 공정 이상에 대한 대처가 시시각각 달랐기 때문에 이에 대한 많은 시간 소모가 발생했었다. 하지만 디스플레이 제조 분야는 고도화된 공정 장비를 이용해야 하고 불량 원인을 신속하게 파악해 수율을 올리는 것이 디스플레이 제조 산업의 경쟁력이다. 본 논문에는 스마트 팩토리 AI/BIG DATA 기술을 디스플레이 제조에 접목한 사례들에 대해 정리해 보고 기존 방법 대비 어떤 장점이 도출 되어질 수 있는지에 대해 처음으로 분석해 보고자 한다. 이를 통해 향후 AI/BIG DATA를 이용한 디스플레이 제조 분야에 보다 향상된 스마트 팩토리 개발을 위한 사전지식으로 활용하고자 한다.

  • Among the various manufacturing processes of composites, the tape lay-up process of thermoset prepreg has many advantages compared to autoclave or hot press forming. It has a high potential to process automation and continuous fabrication. In this study, temperature distribution of composite exposed in hot gas was studied numerically and the validity of the analysis was verified by the experiments.

  • In the shipbuilding industry, three-dimensional (3D) templates play a key role in the completeness evaluation of shell plates with a large curvature in the shell-plate fabrication process. Currently, the information of 3D templates from a ship computer-aided design system is limited; thus, manufacturers depend on their experience to produce the templates manually. This results in the inaccuracy of templates in addition to increased production time. Therefore, if the pieces of the 3D templates can be produced automatically with accurate information, the lead time of the fabrication process can be reduced. In this study, we define a new type of template piece and develop methods for extending a boundary template and converting manufacturing information into numerical control machine input. In addition, based on the results of the study, we propose a production automation system for 3D template pieces. This system is expected to reduce the lead time of the fabrication process.

  • To date, the implementation and adoption of new manufacturing technologies has been retarded despite their technical advances and strategic virtues such as flexibility and synergy effect. This phenomenon is partly attributable to the lack of commensurate development and widespread dissemination of adequate selection and justification procedures. Many strategically vital automation projects have been rejected and/or seemingly promising proposals have turned out to be fiascos since the justification process has been solely based on the traditional capital budgeting or engineering economy methods. As the degree of system automation/integration increases, a variety of benefit/cost attributes, both quantitative and qualitative, should be taken into account and more comprehensive and analytic justification methods should be applied in the justification process. This paper points out the distinct characteristics of advanced technologies and presents an illustrative set of procedures that can be used in the justification process. It outlines the algorithmic structure of each procedure and also describes the advantages/disadvantages of each procedure and the conditions under which it is most appropriate to employ. The selection of appropriate justification technique is situation-specific. In general, it is recommended that more complex and sophisticated procedures be used as the degree of integration increases. Nonetheless, traditional procedures may be used as well to make in-depth analyses of the local impact.

선삭가공에서 공구마멸에 따른 절삭력과 AE 신호의 특성 연구 (A Study on the Cutting Resistance and Acoustic Emission Signal due to Increasing Tool Wear in Turning)

  • In order to achieve the autimation and untended system of manufacturing process, it is necessary that the monitoring system check up the disorder of machine tool or the conditions of tool wear for the maximum use of cutting tool. In the metal cutting Process, AE signal is detected by AE sensor, then amplified and transmitted to an Locan-AT. The experiment was performed to SM25C and STS304 steels at uniform feedrate, cutting speed and depth of cut, The results of experimental data apparently showed emission intensity vary due to increasing of tool wear at the 165kHz, 200kHz in the SM25C and 140kHz, 165kHz, 200kHz, in the STS304 respectively Therefore, it is possible to predict the tool wear. This study is intended to suggest the way to the automation and untended system of machine tool through the system monitoring tool wear by using AE signal.

A Neural Network- Based Classification Method for Inspection of Bead Shape in High Frequency Electric Resistance Weld

  • High-frequency electric resistance welding (HERW) technique is one of the most productive manufacturing method currently available for pipe and tube production because of its high welding speed. In this process, a heat input is controlled by skilled operators observing color and shape of bead but such a manual control can not provide reliability and stability required for manufacturing pipes of high grade quality because of a variety of bead shapes and noisy environment. In this paper, in an effort to provide reliable quality inspection, we propose a neural network-based method for classification of bead shape. The proposed method utilizes the structure of Kohonen network and is designed to learn the skill of the expert operators and to provide a good solution to classify bead shapes according to their welding conditions. This proposed method is implemented on the real pipe manufacturing process, and a series of experiments are performed to show its effectiveness.

  • LMTT (Linear Motor based Transfer Technology), which is a new type transfer system used in the maritime container terminal for the port automation, is driven by PM LSM (Permanent Magnetic Linear Synchronous Motor), and largely consists of a controller, shuttle car, and rail. The shuttle car is divided into the frame part, the driving part, and wheels. Because the shuttle car is supported by four wheels in opposition to have five times length for the width of it, a larger deflection than other transfer system using the linear motor occurs. This deflection changes the gap between the mover and the stator, and then brings on an ununiform thrust force. So in this study, we dealt with the structural design for the mover of the shuttle car to generate the uniform thrust force for the efficient control of it. For the investigation, the thickness for each beam of the mover was adopted as design variables, the weight of the mover as objective function, and stress and deflection of the mover as constraint condition.
