  • Drilling operation for blasting is an important factor to determine blast effect. Drilling errors that arise from performing drilling for blasting purposes can reduce blasting effect causing residual holes, overbreak, and heterogeneous fragmentation, etc. Automatic drilling system was induced for precise drilling. As a result, drilling error caused by spaces between holes and burden was minor at 0~2.6% and accordingly, blasting effect was improved with over 90% drilling rate, the ratio of overbreak amount to total drilling amount at 4.3%, proportion of fragmentation rock under 50cm at 89~95% and so from this analyses, it was estimated to reduce the total cycle times related to blasting process.

  • Among the approaches to the production of "green" energy, geothermal power systems are becoming quite popular in Europe. Their installation in existing buildings requires an extended, external pipes appendix and its laying operation needs a drilling activities nearby structural skeletons often designed to support static loads only, especially when ancient buildings are targeted. This contribution reports and discusses the experimental results achieved within a specific case study within the European project GEOFIT. In particular, standard accelerometric measurements in and nearby a single-story reinforced concrete building are collected and analysed in the absence of drilling (pre-drilling) and during drilling activities (drilling phase) to monitor the structure response to the external source of vibrations related to the excavations phase. The target is to outline automatic guidelines toward installations preventing from any sort of structural damage.

  • In-process detection of drill wear is one of the most important technoligies for automatic, unmaned machining systems. In this study, an on-line drill wear estimation model based on spindle/Z-axis motor currents generated during the drilling process is proposed. The theoretical model is obtained by integrating the drilling process model and the servomechanism model. The drilling process model describes the relationship of drill wear and drilling torque/ thrust force, whereas the servomechanism model describes the relationship of drilling torque/ thrust force applied to motor and spindle/Z-axis motor current. Evaluation tests have shown that the proposed model is a good real-time estimator for drill wear.

  • This paper presents an overview of automated robotic system for skull drilling, which is performed to access for some neurosurgical interventions, such as brain tumor resection. Currently surgeons use automatic-releasing cranial perforators. The drilling procedure must be performed very carefully to avoid penetration of brain nerve structures; however failure cases are reported. The presented prototype system utilizes both preoperative and intraoperative information. Preoperative CT image is used for robot path planning. A NeuroMate robot with a six-DOF force sensor at the end effector is used for intraoperative operation. Intraoperative cutting force from the force sensor is the key information to revise an initial registration and preoperative path plans. Some possibilities are verified by path simulation but cadaver experiments are required for validation of this prototype.

  • In most machining operations, undesirable burr are formed on the edge of the workpiece adjacent to the machined surface. Such burrs are often the cause of various problems during automatic maching process. Therefore, it is very important to know characteristics of burr formation in maching process. This paper describes characteristic of exit burrs generated during miniature drilling process. In particular, the effect of spindle speed, feedrate and drill diameter on burr formaton is investigated. The result showed that exit burr height increased significantly with increasing feedrate.

  • This paper aims to design and analyze the stationary fixture type automatic rotary drilling machine and estimate the safety of the machine through simulations. Working conditions of typical rock excavating machines are mostly affected by geographical conditions on the sea, such as by the ebb and flow of the tide or high waves. Due to the size of machines, it is difficult to move and install machines. So it is necessary to develop a machine that not only can be moved and installed more easily also be operated more quickly and automatically. To validate the safety of the designed structure of the machine, static analysis has been carried out. The results of stress and deformation analysises show that the designed machine is stable and safe in hard working condition.

  • Drilling file is medical mini-drill which is made of Ni-Ti material and has tapered shape. It's for removing teeth nervine which helps the endodontic treatment. All files, saled at domestic market, are imported from U.S. and Europe. Also they have low manufacturing efficiency and high price because it is made by universal 5 axis CNC grinding machine. To solve these problem, 3 axis CNC table, controllable tilting angle spindle and helix angle moving table are devised. To confirm divised CNC grinding machine's manufacturing accuracy, conveying amount and finish product size measurement expreiment has been practiced. Also to automate all manufacturing processes, automatic mechanism is designed.

  • An impeller is difficult to machine due to the complex, overlapping and twisted shapes that form the blades of an impeller. Therefore, most CAM software companies have developed a CAM module for manufacturing an impeller in addition to their CAM software. However, it is not easy for inexperienced users to machine impellers. The purpose of this paper is to outline the development of an automatic CAM module for the manufacturing of an impeller (E-ICAM) which is based on visual basic language and which uses a CATIA graphical environment in order to simplify the machining of impellers. The automatic CAM module generates a tool path and proposes the recommended cutting condition according to the stock and tool material. In addition, it includes a post-processor for five-axis control machining. Therefore, a user can easily machine impellers using this automation module. There are two types of impellers: the closed and open types. The closed-type impeller consists of the body and cover parts. To combine these two parts, it is necessary to create tap holes on the shroud of the body. Therefore, in the study, a drilling CAM program for a closed-type impeller is developed and manufactured by creating NC data from the developed drilling program. After manufacturing the test specimen, its compatibility was verified.

  • The ductile cast iron is austempered at 300, 350 and 40$0^{\circ}C$ temperature in order to investigate the basic factors for monitoring drill wear in automatic production process, and cutting force and AE RMS signals are measured with changing cutting condition for ADI(Austempered Ductile Cast Iron) with different mechanical properties. The signals of cutting force were influenced by cutting speed and feedrate greatly. On the other hand AE RMS signals are influenced by cutting speed where as it is not related with feedrate. As the depth of drilling increases, cutting force shows a slow increase and the value of AE RMS increases until the range of h/d=4. But over the range it increases greatly due to an amount of chip discharge and friction with inner wall of drilling hole, etc. As the drill diameter increases at a constant depth of drilling. Cutting force increases linearly, but the level of AE RMS does not increases linearly due to circumferential velocity and great influence of h/d.

  • The objective of the proposed study is to produce a tool-condition monitoring (TCM) strategy that will lead to a more efficient and economical drilling tool usage. Drill-wear monitoring is an important attribute in the automatic cutting processes as it can help preventing damages of the tools and workpieces and optimizing the tool usage. This study presents the architectures of a multi-layer feed-forward neural network with back-propagation training algorithm for the monitoring of drill wear. The input features to the neural networks were extracted from the AE signals using the wavelet transform analysis. Training and testing were performed under a moderate range of cutting conditions in the dry drilling of steel plates. The results indicated that the extracted input features from AE signals to the supervised neural networks were effective for drill wear monitoring and the output of the neural networks could be utilized for the tool life management planning.
