In emergency dispatching at 119 Command & Dispatch Center, some inconsistencies between the 'standard emergency aid system' and 'dispatch protocol,' which are both mandatory to follow, cause inefficiency in the dispatcher's performance. If an emergency dispatch system uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) to process the dispatcher's protocol speech during the case registration, it instantly extracts and provides the required information specified in the 'standard emergency aid system,' making the rescue command more efficient. For this purpose, we have developed a Korean large vocabulary continuous speech recognition system for 400,000 words to be used for the emergency dispatch system. The 400,000 words include vocabulary from news, SNS, blogs and emergency rescue domains. Acoustic model is constructed by using 1,300 hours of telephone call (8 kHz) speech, whereas language model is constructed by using 13 GB text corpus. From the transcribed corpus of 6,600 real telephone calls, call logs with emergency rescue command class and identified major symptom are extracted in connection with the rescue activity log and National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS). ASR is applied to emergency dispatcher's repetition utterances about the patient information. Based on the Levenshtein distance between the ASR result and the template information, the emergency patient information is extracted. Experimental results show that 9.15% Word Error Rate of the speech recognition performance and 95.8% of emergency response detection performance are obtained for the emergency dispatch system.
In this paper, we implement an automatic distance speech recognition system for voiced-enabled services. We first construct a baseline automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, where acoustic models are trained from speech utterances spoken by using a cross-talking microphone. In order to improve the performance of the baseline ASR using distance speech, the acoustic models are adapted to adjust the spectral characteristics of speech according to different microphones and the environmental mismatches between cross-talking and distance speech. Next we develop a voice activity detection algorithm for distance speech. We compare the performance of the base-line system and the developed ASR system on a task of PBW (Phonetically Balanced Word) 452. As a result it is shown that the developed ASR system provides the average word error rate (WER) reduction of 30.6 % compared to the baseline ASR system.
Diagnosis of pathological voice is one of the important issues in biomedical applications of speech technology. This study focuses on the discrimination of voice disorder using HMM (Hidden Markov Model) for automatic detection between normal voice and vocal fold disorder voice. This is a non-intrusive, non-expensive and fully automated method using only a speech sample of the subject. Speech data from normal people and patients were collected. Mel-frequency filter cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) were modeled by HMM classifier. Different states (3 states, 5 states and 7 states), 3 mixtures and left to right HMMs were formed. This method gives an accuracy of 93.8% for train data and 91.7% for test data in the discrimination of normal and vocal fold disorder voice for sustained /a/.

This paper presents a method for automatically detecting Korean prosodic boundaries using both acoustic and grammatical information for the performance improvement of speech information processing systems. While most of previous works are solely based on grammatical information, our method utilizes not only grammatical information constructed by a Maximum-Entropy-based grammar model using 10 grammatical features, but also acoustical information constructed by a GMM-based acoustic model using 14 acoustic features. Given that Korean prosodic structure has two intonationally defined prosodic units, intonation phrase (IP) and accentual phrase (AP), experimental results show that the detection rate of AP boundaries is 82.6%, which is higher than the labeler agreement rate in hand transcribing, and that the detection rate of IP boundaries is 88.7%, which is slightly lower than the labeler agreement rate.

This paper presents the preliminary result of the automatic pronunciation scoring for non-native English speakers, and shows the developmental process for an English speech recognizer for the educational and evaluational purposes. The proposed speech recognizer, featuring two refined acoustic model sets, implements the noise-robust data compensation, phonetic alignment, highly reliable rejection, key-word and phrase detection, easy-to-use language modeling toolkit, etc., The developed speech recognizer achieves 0.725 as the average correlation between the human raters and the machine scores, based on the speech database YOUTH for training and K-SEC for test.

In general, the synthesis unit database was constructed by recording isolated word. In that case, each boundary of word has typical prosodic pattern like a falling intonation or preboundary lengthening. To get natural synthetic speech using these kinds of database, we must artificially distort original speech. However, that artificial process rather resulted in unnatural, unintelligible synthetic speech due to the excessive prosodic modification on speech signal. To overcome these problems, we gathered thousands of sentences for synthesis database. To make a phone level synthesis unit, we trained speech recognizer with the recorded speech, and then segmented phone boundaries automatically. In addition, we used laryngo graph for the epoch detection. From the automatically generated synthesis database, we chose the best phone and directly concatenated it without any prosody processing. To select the best phone among multiple phone candidates, we used prosodic information such as break strength of word boundaries, phonetic contexts, cepstrum, pitch, energy, and phone duration. From the pilot test, we obtained some positive results.

This paper presents an analysis of feature extraction methods used for distinguishing the speech of patients with cleft palates and people with normal palates. This research is a basic study on the development of a software system for automatic recognition and restoration of speech disorders, in pursuit of improving the welfare of speech disabled persons. Monosyllable voice data for experiments were collected for three groups: normal speech, cleft palate speech, and simulated clef palate speech. The data consists of 14 basic Korean consonants, 5 complex consonants, and 7 vowels. Feature extractions are performed using three well-known methods: LPC, MFCC, and PLP. The pattern recognition process is executed using the acoustic model GMM. From our experiments, we concluded that the MFCC method is generally the most effective way to identify speech distortions. These results may contribute to the automatic detection and correction of the distorted speech of cleft palate patients, along with the development of an identification tool for levels of speech distortion.

This paper proposes a machine learning approach for language-independent sentence boundary detection. The proposed method requires no heuristic rules and language-specific features, such as part-of-speech information, a list of abbreviations or proper names. With only the language-independent features, we perform experiments on not only an inflectional language but also an agglutinative language, having fairly different characteristics (in this paper, English and Korean, respectively). In addition, we obtain good performances in both languages. We have also experimented with the methods under a wide range of experimental conditions, especially for the selection of useful features.

Automatic speech recognition(ASR) is attractive technique in trend these day that seek convenient life. Although many approaches have been proposed for ASR but the performance is still not good in noisy environment. Now-a-days in the state of art in speech recognition, ASR uses not only the audio information but also the visual information. In this paper, We present a novel lip detection method for visual speech recognition in mobile environment. In order to apply visual information to speech recognition, we need to extract exact lip regions. Because eye-detection is more easy than lip-detection, we firstly detect positions of left and right eyes, then locate lip region roughly. After that we apply K-means clustering technique to devide that region into groups, than two lip corners and lip center are detected by choosing biggest one among clustered groups. Finally, we have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method through the experiments based on samsung AVSR database.

In many areas of speech signal processing such as automatic speech recognition and packet based voice communication technique, VAD (voice activity detection) plays an important role in the performance of the overall system. In this paper, we present a new feature parameter for VAD which is the product of energy of the signal and the difference of two types of entropies. For this end, we first define a Mel filter-bank based entropy and calculate its difference from the conventional entropy in frequency domain. The difference is then multiplied by the spectral energy of the signal to yield the final feature parameter which we call PEED (product of energy and entropy difference). Through experiments. we could verify that the proposed VAD parameter is more efficient than the conventional spectral entropy based parameter in various SNRs and noisy environments.
