This paper presents a new descriptor, named Histograms of Prominent Edge Directions (HPED), for the recognition of facial expressions in a person-independent environment. In this paper, we raise the issue of sampling error in generating the code-histogram from spatial regions of the face image, as observed in the existing descriptors. HPED describes facial appearance changes based on the statistical distribution of the top two prominent edge directions (i.e., primary and secondary direction) captured over small spatial regions of the face. Compared to existing descriptors, HPED uses a smaller number of code-bins to describe the spatial regions, which helps avoid sampling error despite having fewer samples while preserving the valuable spatial information. In contrast to the existing Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) that uses the histogram of the primary edge direction (i.e., gradient orientation) only, we additionally consider the histogram of the secondary edge direction, which provides more meaningful shape information related to the local texture. Experiments on popular facial expression datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed HPED against existing descriptors in a person-independent environment.
In this study, an image processing method for the measurement of two-phase bubbly flow is developed. Shadowgraphy images obtained by high-speed camera are used for analysis. Some bubbles are generated as single unit and others are overlapped or clustered. Single bubbles can be easily analyzed using parameters such as bubble shape, centroid, and area. But overlapped bubbles are difficult to transform clustered bubbles into segmented bubbles. Several approaches were proposed for the bubble segmentation such as Hough transform, connection point method and watershed. These methods are not enough for bubble segmentation. In order to obtain the size distribution of bubbles, we present a method of splitting overlapping bubbles using watershed and approximating them to ellipse. There is only 5% error difference between manual and automatic analysis. Furthermore, the error can be reduced down to 1.2% when a correction factor is used. The ellipse fitting algorithm developed in this study can be used to measure bubble parameters accurately by reflecting the shape of the bubbles.

The classification standards for hotels in Vietnam are different from many other hotel classification standards in the world. This study aims to analyze customer reviews on the TripAdvisor website to develop a new algorithm for hotel rating that is independent of Vietnam's hotel classification standards. This method can be applied to individual hotels, or hotels of a region or the whole country, while online booking sites only rate individual hotels. Data was crawled from TripAdvisor with 22,287 reviews of 5 cities in Vietnam. This study used a statistical model to analyze the review dataset and build an algorithm to rate hotels according to aspects or hotel overall. The results have less rating deviation when compared to the TripAdvisor system. This study also supports hotel managers to regularly update the status of their hotels using data from customer reviews, from which, managers can strategize long-term solutions to improve the quality of the hotel in all aspects and attract more travelers to Vietnam. Moreover, this method can be developed into an automatic system to rate hotels and update the status of service quality more quickly, thus, saving time and costs.
Particulate matter (PM) is an air pollutant that causes serious environmental problems in Korea and other countries. The annual average PM10 concentration in Korea is around 40 ㎛/㎥, which is more than twice as high as the WHO recommended standard. When consumed with food, fine PM can pose a risk to humans. However, the risk of fine PM has been focused on the risk of fine PM introduced through the respiratory system. We investigated the quantitative measuring methods of PM10 on food surface to identify possible risk analysis of fine PM. The surfaces of food with artificially contaminated PM10 were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM). An automatic object-based image analysis was used to analyze the amount and size distribution of particulate matter contained in SEM micrographs.
OpenMC is a community-driven open-source Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport simulation code. The Weight Window Mesh (WWM) function and an automatic Global Variance Reduction (GVR) method was recently developed and implemented in a developmental branch of OpenMC. This WWM function and GVR method broaden OpenMC's usage in general purposes deep penetration shielding calculations. However, the Local Variance Reduction (LVR) method, which suits the source-detector problem, is still missing in OpenMC. In this work, the Weight Window Generator (WWG) function has been developed and benchmarked for the same branch. This WWG function allows OpenMC to generate the WWM for the source-detector problem on its own. Single-material cases with varying shielding and sources were used to benchmark the WWG function and investigate how to set up the particle histories utilized in WWG-run and WWM-run. Results show that there is a maximum improvement of WWM generated by WWG. Based on the above results, instructions on determining the particle histories utilized in WWG-run and WWM-run for optimal computation efficiency are given and tested with a few multi-material cases. These benchmarks demonstrate the ability of the OpenMC WWG function and the above instructions for the source-detector problem. This developmental branch will be released and merged into the main distribution in the future.
Post-earthquake building condition assessment is crucial for subsequent rescue and remediation and can be automated by emerging computer vision and deep learning technologies. This study is based on an endeavour for the 2nd International Competition of Structural Health Monitoring (IC-SHM 2021). The task package includes five image segmentation objectives - defects (crack/spall/rebar exposure), structural component, and damage state. The structural component and damage state tasks are identified as the priority that can form actionable decisions. A multi-task Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proposed to conduct the two major tasks simultaneously. The rest 3 sub-tasks (spall/crack/rebar exposure) were incorporated as auxiliary tasks. By synchronously learning defect information (spall/crack/rebar exposure), the multi-task CNN model outperforms the counterpart single-task models in recognizing structural components and estimating damage states. Particularly, the pixel-level damage state estimation witnesses a mIoU (mean intersection over union) improvement from 0.5855 to 0.6374. For the defect detection tasks, rebar exposure is omitted due to the extremely biased sample distribution. The segmentations of crack and spall are automated by single-task U-Net but with extra efforts to resample the provided data. The segmentation of small objects (spall and crack) benefits from the resampling method, with a substantial IoU increment of nearly 10%.
The bandgap characteristics of semiconductor materials are an important factor when utilizing semiconductor materials for various applications. In this study, based on data provided by AFLOW (Automatic-FLOW for Materials Discovery), the bandgap of a semiconductor material was predicted using only the material's compositional features. The compositional features were generated using the python module of 'Pymatgen' and 'Matminer'. Pearson's correlation coefficients (PCC) between the compositional features were calculated and those with a correlation coefficient value larger than 0.95 were removed in order to avoid overfitting. The bandgap prediction performance was compared using the metrics of R2 score and root-mean-squared error. By predicting the bandgap with randomforest and xgboost as representatives of the ensemble algorithm, it was found that xgboost gave better results after cross-validation and hyper-parameter tuning. To investigate the effect of compositional feature selection on the bandgap prediction of the machine learning model, the prediction performance was studied according to the number of features based on feature importance methods. It was found that there were no significant changes in prediction performance beyond the appropriate feature. Furthermore, artificial neural networks were employed to compare the prediction performance by adjusting the number of features guided by the PCC values, resulting in the best R2 score of 0.811. By comparing and analyzing the bandgap distribution and prediction performance according to the material group containing specific elements (F, N, Yb, Eu, Zn, B, Si, Ge, Fe Al), various information for material design was obtained.
As semiconductor device architecture develops, from planar field-effect transistors (FET) to FinFET and gate-all-around (GAA), there is an increased need to measure 3D structure sidewalls precisely. Here, we present a 3-Dimensional Atomic Force Microscope (3D-AFM), a powerful 3D metrology tool to measure the sidewall roughness (SWR) of vertical and undercut structures. First, we measured three different dies repeatedly to calculate reproducibility in die level. Reproducible results were derived with a relative standard deviation under 2%. Second, we measured 13 different dies, including the center and edge of the wafer, to analyze SWR distribution in wafer level and reliable results were measured. All analysis was performed using a novel algorithm, including auto fattening, sidewall detection, and SWR calculation. In addition, SWR automatic analysis software was implemented to reduce analysis time and to provide standard analysis. The results suggest that our 3D-AFM, based on the tilted Z scanner, will enable an advanced methodology for automated 3D measurement and analysis.
Recently, a method of deriving an efficient 2D floor plan has been attracting attention for remodeling of old buildings with inaccurate 2D floor plans, and thus, studies on reverse engineering of indoor Point Cloud Date(PCD) have been actively conducted. However, in the case of a indoor PCD, due to interference of indoor objects, available equipment is limited to Mobile Laser Scanner(MLS), which causes a efficiency reduction of data processing. Therefore, this study proposes an automatic derivation algorithm for 2D floor plan of indoor PCD based on pixelation. First, the scanned indoor PCD is projected on the XY coordinate plane. Second, a point distribution of each pixel in the projected PCD is derived using a pixelation. Lastly, 2 floor plan derivation based on the algorithm is performed.
Precipitation is a crucial component of water cycle and play a key role in hydrological processes. Traditionally, gauge-based precipitation is the main method to achieve high accuracy of rainfall estimation, but its distribution is sparsely in mountainous areas. Recently, satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) provide grid-based precipitation with spatio-temporal variability, but SPPs contain a lot of uncertainty in estimated precipitation, and the spatial resolution quite coarse. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to generate new grid-based daily precipitation using Automatic weather system (AWS) in Korea and multiple SPPs(i.e. CHIRPSv2, CMORPH, GSMaP, TRMMv7) during the period of 2003-2017. And this study used a machine learning based Random Forest (RF) model for generating new merging precipitation. In addition, several statistical linear merging methods are used to compare with the results of the RF model. In order to investigate the efficiency of RF, observed data from 64 observed Automated Synoptic Observation System (ASOS) were collected to evaluate the accuracy of the products through Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE), probability of detection (POD), false alarm rate (FAR), and critical success index (CSI). As a result, the new precipitation generated through the random forest model showed higher accuracy than each satellite rainfall product and spatio-temporal variability was better reflected than other statistical merging methods. Therefore, a random forest-based ensemble satellite precipitation product can be efficiently used for hydrological simulations in ungauged basins such as the Mekong River.
