We have studied the effect of auricular acupuncture on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). 100 female patients undergoing transabdominal hysterectomy were entered into the study. The patients were divided into two groups (auricular acupuncture treatment group and non-treatment group) to test the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture. acupuncture consisted of needle insertion in one ear at four points: sympathetic, stomach, shinmoon and occiput. Before the operation, the above points were punctured perpendicularly by the thumbtack-type needle, leaving its handle lying flat on the skin surface. There was no significant difference in age, weight, height and duration of anesthesia among the two groups of patients. There was a cignificant difference between the control group and auricular acupuncture treatment group in the incidence of vomiting at the first 12 h after surgery 68% and 30%, respectively, p<0.01) No noteworthy side effects fbom treatment were observed. auricular acupuncture is effective in reducing nausea and vomiting after transabdominal hysterectomy in female patients.

Objectives The Objective was to evaluate the efficacy of auricular acupuncture treatment for adolescent dysmenorrheic women. Method This study was carried out to the 25 adolescent dysmenorrheic women without pelvic or other systemic disease and its history who visited outpatient department of Oriental Hospital, Semyung, univ. from June, 2002 to September, 2002. We investigated general characteristics, menstrual and dysmenorrheic characteristics through out the patient's note and comparison of before and after auricular acupuncture treatment by using a 10cm Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) for sample patients. Results The $mean{\pm}Standard$ Error of mean(S.E) of VAS score on before and after auricular acupuncture treatment were $6.36{\pm}0.49$ and $2.24{\pm}0.35$. The $mean{\pm}S.E$ of VAS score of after auricular acupuncture treatment was decreased significantly compared with that of before(p<0.01). Conclusion The auricular acupuncture treatment will be efficacious against adolescent dysmenorrhea

Objective : The aim of the present study is to investigate whether stimulating a specific auricular point(胃點) is effect on suppression of appetite. Methods : This study evaluated the changes of Reduced-Nicotinamide-Adenine-inucieotide-Phosphate-diaphorase(NADPH-d)-positive neurons using a histoehemical method. Staining intensities of NADPH-d-positive neurons were assessed in a quantitative fashion using a microdensitometrical method based on optical density by means of an image analyzer. Results : The results show as follows ; 1. In the RSG/RSA, FRI/FR2, HL, PAR1 area, The optical density of NADPH-d-positive neurons of fasted group was significantly decreased in comparison to fed group. 2. In most cortical area, It was not significant statistically, But the optical density of NADPH-d-positive neurons of fed with auricular acupuncture group was decreased in comparison to fed group. 3. In most cortical area, It was not significant statistically, But fasted with auricular acupuncture group increased the optical density of NADPH-d-positive neurons comparison to fasted group. Conclusions : We conclude that stimulating the specific auricular points is able to effect on NO(Nitric Oxide)-expression in the brain cortex of sprague dawley rats, The results suggest that auricular acupuncture may be useful for controlling obesity.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to compare three therapies - auricular acupuncture, transdermal nicotine patch and therapy - in combination with auricular acupuncture and nicotine patch. Methods : The subjects of this study included 188 male smokers in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, who visited Wonmi Public Health Center. They were evaluated with the Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence, amounts of daily smoking and success rate of smoking cessation. The subjects decided on a therapy method strictly of their own choice. They were divided into three groups according to the therapy; auricular acupuncture group (62 persons), nicotine patch group (69 persons) and combination therapy group (57 persons). Results : All three groups resulted in statistically significant reducing effects of nicotine dependence and amounts of daily smoking. In the combination therapy group, nicotine dependence was significantly decreased by more than those of the other groups. There were no statistically significant differences in decrements of daily smoking and success rate of smoking cessation among the three groups. Conclusions : The above results suggest that auricular acupuncture and transdermal nicotine patch have significant effects of smoking cessation. If they are combined, it is expected that therapies for smoking cessation would be developed.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of auricular acupuncture at the Shinmun on patients with dementia by using power spectrum analysis. Electroencephalogram(EEG) power spectrum show site-specific and state-related differences in various frequency bands. Methods : Study was carried out in 38 subjects.(31 patients with dementia and 7 normal people, 27 females and 11 males ; mean age=75.9 years old). To know the effect of auricular acupuncture at the Shinmun in patients with dementia, we measured electroencephalogram(EEG) of normal people and patients with dementia about 'before', 'after' and 'after 15 minutes' giving auricular acupuncture at the Shinmun, and compared the brain wave($\alpha$, $\beta$, $\delta$, $\theta$) of EEG 30 channels. Results : In the case of patients with dementia, in the power values of $\alpha$(alpha) band at F4, FP2, FCZ, F8, FC4 channels (p<0.05) during the Shinmun-auricular acupuncture treatment increased significantly. In $\beta$(beta) band, the power values at T8 channel(p<0.05) during the Shinmun-auricular acupuncture treatment increased significantly. In $\delta$(delta) band, the power values at F7, FP1, FZ, FP2, FCZ, C4, FC4, CP4, T8, P7, P3, O1, OZ, O2, P4, P8 channels(p<0.05) during the Shinmun-auricular acupuncture treatment decreased significantly. In $\Theta$(theta) band, the power values at O1, OZ, O2channel(p<0.05) during the Shinmun-auricular acupuncture treatment decreased significantly. Conclusions : Through these results, we concluded that auricular acupuncture at the Shinmun on patients with dementia could have effect the functional mechanism of the cerebral cortex.

This study aimed to analyze auricular acupressure and auricular acupuncture used in smoking cessation research by analyzing published randomized controlled trials. Eight databases (PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, CNKI, CiNII, KMbase, KISS, OASIS) were searched until December 2021, and 21 out of 1,919 studies met inclusion criteria. Data on the treatment site, time, frequency, period, and outcomes were analyzed. Lung (MA-IC1) and Ear Shenmen (MA-TF1) were the most used acupoints. The number of treatments varied between a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 24, and treatment duration varied between a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 8 weeks. Cigarette consumption and smoking cessation rate were the most studied outcome, followed by multiple other psychological indications.

Recently WHO death from smoking-related illness would increase more than a thousand in the future. But in spite of various harms, smoking cigarette in developing countries is increasing especially in the adolescents. So in order to evaluate whether auricular acupuncture therapy is effective to quit smoking, clinical examination was carried out. And the results showed that age of starting smoking become lower. The cause of smoking is curiosity, relaxation, envy and comradeship. For this reason they want to stop smoking but feel it is difficult to do. Cigarette smoking didn't show any significant change after auricular acupuncture in both control and therapy. And physical and psychological change did not present any significance. However, auricular acupuncture therapy was appeared to be effective to stop smoking. So with these results, further systemic research to examine the effect of auricular acupuncture is seem to be necessary.

Purpose: This study was to exam me the effects of auricular acupuncture on insomnia in Korean elderly. Method: The study design was a triangulation study. Subjects were 40 elderly who were 65 years and over in Seoul, and 10 subjects for a qualitive study who were saturated with interviews and observation. The first auricular acupuncture was applied for three days, and this was applied to subjects on a 5 times series. The quantative data was analyzed by SPSS PC+ and the qualitive data was analyzed by driving of core meaning and abstract concepts using a semi-structural interview and observation. Result: I. The experimental group had higher significant sleep scores than that of the control group (t=32.739, p=.001). 2. The experimental group had higher significant self- satisfaction scores on sleep than that of the control group (t=30.049, p=.001). 3. In the qualitive study, insomnia characteristics before application of auricular acupressure therapy were confirmed by physical dysfunction, recall of past, and psychological dysfunction. Insomnia characteristics after application of auricular acupressure therapy were confirmed by recovery of physical dysfunction, improving recall of past, and recovery of psychological dysfunction. Conclusion: Auricular acupuncture was effective on insomnia in Korean elderly.

Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the decreasing or stop-smoking effect of smoking patients who were given to the auricular acupuncture treatment. Methods : We investigated the smoking patients who serviced Korea Power Engineering Company from March 2002 to April 2002. And one month later we investigated result. Results : In the success rate of low nicotine dependence group, stop-smoking was 28.2%, Above good effect was 57.7%. In the success rate of high nicotine dependence group, stop-smoking was 12.5%, Above good effect was 23.1%. Conclusion : We found that the auricular acupuncture treatment has the decreasing or stop-smoking effect of smoking patients specially to low nicotine dependence group.

Clinical studies were done 23 peoples who were treated with the auricular acupuncture therapy to the hypertension in the Dept. of the Acupuncture and Moxibution Hospital of Oriental Medicine in Won Kwang University. The following results have obtained. 1. Distribution of sex: male (52.0%), female (48.0%), 2. Distribution of age: 50s age group (30.0%), 70s(26.0%), 40s or 60s(22.0%). 3. Distribution of occupation: housewife (26.0%), farmer or commerce(22.0%), unemployed(13.0%), 4. Causes of illness: unknown origin(61.0%), stress(17.0%), drinking (13.0%), 5. Distribution according to symptom: headache(57.0%), non-symptom(17.0%), dizziness(9.0%). 6. Duration of onset: 3-5 years(26,0%), unknown(17.0%), 6 months, 5-10 years or 10 years (13.0%). 7. Cure rate of auricular acupuncture treatment according to differentiation symptoms: HLY(43.0%), DLK(30.0%), DYY(13.0%), HYD(9.0%). 8. Result grade on $pr{\`{e}}-freatment$ of auricular acupuncture: Grade I(4.0%), GradeII(52.0%), Grade III(43.0%). Result grade on post-treaftment auricular acupuncture: Grade O(48.0%), Grade I(26.0%), Grade II(26.0%).
