Growth and Production of Aulichthys japonicus in an Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Bed of Dongdae Bay, Korea (동대만 잘피밭에 서식하는 실비늘치(Aulichthys japonicus)의 성장과 생산량)

  • The growth and production of Aulichthys japonicus (6.70~15.32 cm TL) were investigated in an eelgrass bed of Dongdae Bay, Korea throughout 2006. A total 888 A. japonicus were collected with a small beam trawl. Growth in fish total length was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's growth equation as: $L_t=24.8257(1-e^{-0.5583(t+0.4816)})$. The densities, biomass, daily, annual production, and P/B ratio were $0.01{\pm}0.009/m^{-2}$, $0.17{\pm}0.16g/m^2$, $0.00006{\pm}0.00006g$ AFDW/$m^2$/day, 0.02g AFDW/$m^2$/yr, and 0.12, respectively. Monthly variation in production of A. japonicus was large; the peak occurred at July, September and November 2006 (0.000182, 0.000127 and 0.000123 g AFDW/$m^2$/day), where as the lowest value was 0.000003g AFDW/$m^2$/day at April and May 2006. Monthly change in production of A. japonicus was positive correlated with number of individuals, biomass and growth rate.

  • The spawning season, growth and feeding habit of tubesnout, Aulichthys japonicus were examined from the samples collected by a small beam trawl in the Zostera marina belt at the coastal water off Hamduck, Cheju Island, from May 1993 to May 1994. Tubesnout was the dominant species of overall 58 species collected in the study area throughout the year. The larvae and juvenile of tubesnout in the frequency distributions of body length began to appear in the Z. marina belt in March, and adults disappeared after May in the following year. The gonad weight index (GWI) and the condition factor (K) were high from November 1993 to January 1994 for males, while females were high from February to May 1994. Although tubesnout is an oviparous fish, males have the urogenital papilla. These results suggest that they were fertilized between November and January, and then males seemed to be died or move into other places. Females were examined to spawn from February to May. The stomach contents of tubesnout were dominated by copepoda smaller than ca. 1mm, Paracalanus, Oithona, Acartia, Oncaea and Harpacticoidae, accounting for 97% of total food items. The feeding habit of tubesnout did not vary by size. The fishes fed on Calanus, Euchaeta and decapoda larvae larger than ca. 3mm in March and April during the spawning season.

Length-weight Relationships for 19 Fish Species in Sargassum Beds of Gamak Bay, Korea

  • Length-weight relationships were estimated for 19 fish species in sargassum beds of Gamak Bay: Aulichthys japonicus, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Pseudoblennius percoides, Ditrema temmincki, Acanthogobius lactipes, Chaenogobius heptacanthus, Cryptocentrus filifer, Pterogobius elapoides, Pterogobius zonoleucus, Hyporhamphus sajori, Hexagrammos agrammus, Rudarius ercodes, Lateolabrax japonicus, Pholis crassispina, Pholis nebulosa, Scomber japonicus, Sebastes inermis, Ernogrammus hexagrammus, and Takifugu niphobles. Samples were caught by surrounding net at depths of <7 m between November 2007 and June 2008. The most abundant families were Gobiidae (26.3%), Cottidae (10.5%), and Pholididae (10.5%). Estimates for parameter b of the length-weight relationship (W=$aL^b$) ranged between 2.491 and 3.354.

  • Fish species composition in eelgrass bed of Geoje island, Korea was determined using monthly samples collected by a surf net from August 2009 to July 2010. A total of 31 species, 1,387 individuals and 4,776.5 g of fishes were collected. The dominant species were Rudarius ercodes, Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Ditrema temminckii, Takifugu niphobles, Hypodytes rubripinnis, Chaenogobius annularis, Aulichthys japonicus, Syngnathus schlegeli, Pterogobius elapoides which accounted for 89.3% of total number of individuals of fish collected. Eelgrass biomass showed a peak in August (DW 154 g/$m^2$), low values in November (DW 31 g/$m^2$) to February (DW 41 g/$m^2$), and started growing from May (DW 78 g/$m^2$). The biomass of fish increased by the catch of a large number of Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Chaenogobius annularis, Pterogobius elapoides, Rudarius ercodes and Pseudoblennius percoides in May and September when the eelgrass grew fast. Meanwhile, Syngnathus schlegeli, Urocampus nanus and Aulichthys japonicus were collected year-round with no clear relationship to the biomass of eelgrass bed.

  • Fish species composition in eelgrass bed of Punghwa-ri in Tongyeong, Korea was determined using monthly samples collected by a surf net from November 2010 to October 2011. During the study period, a total of 30 species, 5,511 individuals and 6,933.4 g of fishes were collected. The dominant fish species were Pholis nebulosa, Syngnathus schlegeli, Rudarius ercodes, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Sebastes inermis, and Aulichthys japonicus which accounted for 93.4% of total number of individuals collected. Most fishes collected in the eelgrass bed belong mainly to small fish species or juveniles of large fish species. Eelgrass shoot density reached a peak in April 2011, and then decreased to a minimum in January 2011. The seasonal variation of fish assemblage in an eelgrass bed of Punghwa-ri was correlated to the variations in the water temperature, eelgrass density and biomass, and abundances of major prey organisms.

  • This is the attempt to study the fish assemblages in eelgrass bed of Jeogu on Geoje Island, Korea. Samples were collected by surf net monthly from August 2009 to July 2010. A total 38 species, 2,335 individuals, and 5,289.8g of fishes were collected. The dominant species were Chaenogobius annularis, Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Siganus fuscescens, Ditrema temminckii, Takifugu niphobles, Aulichthys japonicus, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Syngnathus schlegeli, Sebastes schlegelii, Pterogobius elapoides, Urocampus nanus, Takifugu pardalis, Hypodytes rubripinnis which accounted for 94.2% of total number of individuals of fish collected. Eelgrass biomass showed a peak in August (DW 121.5g/m$^2$), low values in November (DW 74.9 g/m$^2$) to February (DW 49.3g/m$^2$), and started growing from May (DW 112.8g/m$^2$). Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Sebastes schlegeli, Takifugu niphobles, Syngnathus schlegeli, Urocampus nanus were collected year-round with no clear relationship to the biomass of eelgrass bed.

  • A total of 57 species of fish species was collected by a trawl from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay. The dominant species were Pholis nebulosa, Syngnathus schlegeli, Leiognathus nuchalis, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Sebastes inermis, Favonigobius gymnauchen, which accounted for 69.9% of the total numbers of fish collected. Fish collected in the study area were primarily small fish species or early juveniles of large fish species. Only about 10% of fishes which were collected in the eelgrass bed exceeded 15cm in standard length. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance were major characteristics in the study area. The peak abundance occurred in spring, while the number of species was the highest in fall. However, both the number of species and abundance of fishes showed the lowest values in winter. High species diversity indices were observed in fall. Temperature, eelgrass standing crop and abundance of food organisms influenced seasonal changes of the fish community in the study area. More abundant and more diverse fishes were collected during nighttime than daytime.

Seasonal Variation in Fish Species Composition in the Coastal Water of Samdong-myeon, Namhae, Korea (남해군 삼동면 연안 어류의 월별 종조성 변화)

  • Fish assemblages in a sandy shore and an eelgrass bed were compared based on monthly samples in the southern coastal water of Korea. Samples were collected by a beam trawl in the sandy shore and a surf net in the eelgrass from March to February 2012. The common fish species were Syngnathus schlegeli, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Pholis nebulosa, Favonigobius gymnauchen, Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, Takifugu niphobles. Among them S. schlegeli, Urocampus nanus, P. cottoides, P. nebulosa, T. niphobles were high abundance in the eelgrass bed than in the sandy shore, whereas Acanthogobius flavimanus, Acentrogobius pflaumi, F. gymnauchen, G. heptacanthus, P. yokohamae were high in the sandy shore. Aulichthys japonicus, Hippocampus coronatus, Sebastes inermis, Lateolabrax japonicus, Siganus fuscescens were found in the eelgrass bed, and Thryssa hamiltoni, Mugil cephalus, Inimicus japonicus, Platycephalus indicus, Hexagrammos otakii, Furcina ishikawae, Liparis tanakae, Repomucenus curvicornis, and Eutaeniichthys gilli were observed in the sandy shore. Species composition and abundance varied seasonally in two habitats; The number of species and abundance was high in August and September, while biomass was the highest in April and September. Fish numbers as well as biomass were lowest in February. Number of individuals and biomass of fish in the eelgrass bed were significantly higher than those of in the sandy shore. Some fish preferred to live in the eelgrass were collected in the sandy shore, while fish preferred to live in the sandy shore were rarely collected in the eelgrass.

  • This is a study of the fish assemblages in eelgrass beds of Geoje Bay on Geoje Island, Korea. Samples were collected by surf net monthly from June 2006 to May 2007. A total 26 species, 1,825 individuals, and 4,483.1 g of fishes were collected. The dominant species were Acentrogobius pflaumii, Aulichthys japonicus, Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Chaenogobius annularis, Gymnogobius urotaenia, Syngnathus schlegeli, Pterogobius elapoides, Zoarchias glaber, Takifugu niphobles, Zoarchia suchidai. These species accounted for 90.6% of the total number of individuals and 76.2% of the biomass of the fishes collected. The fish assemblages in the eelgrass beds showed clear seasonal changes; the number of fish species and individuals increased in March and were highest in September, whereas the biomass attained its highest level in May and subsequently decreased. Meanwhile the species diversity indices showed their highest value in December.

  • The species composition and seasonal variations of fish community in the Zostera marina belt at the coastal water off Hamduck, northern part of Cheju Island, were analyzed based on day and night samples collected by a small beam trawl from May 1993 to May 1994. The dominant species among the 58 fish species in 35 family were tubesnout, Aulichthys japonicus, gobie, Pterogobius zonoleucus, filefish, Rudarius ercodes, pipefish, Syngnathus schlegeli and sea catfish, Plotosus lineatus. These species comprised 86.1% in the number of individuals and 62% in biomass. The number of individuals and biomass were high between October and December, and low between January and April. About 90% of fishes were noncommercial and small-sized fishes, less than 14cm in total length. The larvae and juvenile fishes were collected in the study area throughout the year. The recruitments of dominant species were related to the seasonal variations of Z. marina utilized as a shelter or feeding ground. A japonicus, P. zonoleucus, Zoarchias glaber and Hexagrammos agrammus recruited between January and June, and R. ercodes, S. schlegeli, P. lineatus and Petroscirtes breviceps between July and December.
