Trend of Technologies and Standardizations for Mobile Augmented Reality (모바일 증강현실 기술 및 표준화 동향)

  • Recently, by increasing the number of smartphone users, the applications for product brochure and advertising service using a technology of augmented reality are also taking place exponentially. The term, augmented reality, is an application of providing composite view with real world and virtual world, and synthesizing the information to make it look-like things that exist in the actual environments of the original real world. In this paper, we present the trends of core technologies and the standardization related on augmented reality in the mobile environment, and discuss the necessary of standards related to image-based augmented reality.

  • Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging technology and a vibrant field, it has become common in application development, especially in smartphone applications (mobile phones). The AR technology has grown increasingly during the past decade in many fields. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the optimal approach to building the final product by evaluating the performance of each of them separately at a specific task. In this work we evaluated overall CPU and RAM performance for several types of Markerless Augmented Reality applications by using a multiple-objects in mobile development. The results obtained are show that the objects with fewer number of vertices performs steady and not oscillating. Object was superior to the rest of the others is sphere, which is performs better values when processed, its values closer to the minimum CPU and RAM usage.

Analysis of the Research on Augmented Reality Using Knowledge Domain Visualization based on Co-Citation Analysis (동시인용분석 기반 지식영역 가시화 기법을 활용한 증강현실 연구 분석)

  • Augmented reality (AR) is considered to be an excellent user interface to a 3D information space embedded within physical reality. For this reason, it has been applied to various applications such as design, medical service, interaction, and collaboration. However, there is no formal way of analyzing the research trend and evolution of augmented reality. This paper identifies the research trend and change in augmented reality (AR) via co-citation analysis. The co-citation analysis provides how the AR research has evolved, who are main contributors, and which papers suggest essential and influencing impact. To systematically analyze the cocitation, we have retrieved 1,145 papers from the Web of Science and applied a scientomertric analysis using CiteSpace. Based on the co-citation analysis of authors and documents, it is possible to analyze the evolution of augmented reality, key authors and papers, and breakthroughs. We have also compared the proposed approach with survey papers written by experts so that the result of the co-citation analysis can compromise the qualitative result done by experts, and thus it can provide a different view and insight for visualizing the research on augmented reality.

  • In this study, the 3- dimensional (3-D) learning contents are suggested using 'Augmented Reality' instead of existing 2-dimensional (2-D) learning methods. At the present, there are some 2-D learning methods using texts, image, pictures, and videos called e-learning. However, these one-way 2-D methods have some disadvantages such as declining learner's immersion and concentration. Thus, the 3-D learning contents using 'Augmented Reality' are suggested to compensate the disadvantages. According to the development of information technology (IT), the augmented reality has many applications to the era of ubiquitous. However, there are some disadvantages when learners use these contents as following; non-augmenting by partially hiding from makers and declining concentration by patterns of the makers. In this study, the beneficial marker which can solve this non-augmenting phenomenon is suggested.

  • In these days, technologies of virtual reality (VR) and of augmented reality (AR) have applied to diverse areas such as medicine, defense, education that are closely related to real-life practice. In contrast to the previous applications of game or sports, the technologies of VR and AR tends to expand the areas of applications according to development of the imaging or video techniques. This paper introduces VR and AR techniques and some examples of applications. In addition, this paper introduces how the differences between VR and AR technologies affect to the applications of broadcasting systems. In the last, this paper introduces the results of interviews about suitability and future feasibility of VR and AR techniques for broadcasting systems from korean broadcasting companies.

  • Augmented reality is a novel human-machine interaction that overlays virtual computer-generated information on a real world environment. It has found good potential applications in many fields, such as training, surgery, entertainment, maintenance, assembly, product design and other manufacturing operations. In this study, a smartphone-based augmented reality system was developed for the purpose of monitoring and managing injection molding production lines. Required management items were drawn from a management content analysis, and then the items were divided into two broad management categories: line management and equipment management. Effective work management was enabled by providing those working on the shop floor with management content information combined with the actual images of an injection molding production line through augmented reality.

  • In this paper, we proposed a context-aware augmented reality platform for mobile augmented reality to support user-oriented virtual world information for smartphone user. We designed the platform architecture and 6 subsystems which are derived from the analysis of existing augmented reality applications and platforms. The proposed architecture includes a context reasoning service subsystem for the context-aware information filtering, and separates the inner platform from the outer virtual world network containing virtual information to resolve interoperability issue of POI(Points of Interest) data.

  • In this paper, we propose that we can use our mobile devices as an effective interface for HMD-based augmented reality(AR) applications. Recently most People have mobile devices, with which they usually watch movies and connect internet So, people get accustomed to the mobile devices. In addition, the mobile devices can show various markers on their displays so that we can implement various AR applications. So, the mobile devices are quite good interface for AR applications. In the paper, we show how we can use the mobile devices as Interface for AR applications by implementing some AR experiments.

  • It is challenging to select appropriate technology in education to interact with students in today's digital world. Especially when the technologies used at home on smart devices like tablets and mobile phones are very advanced, on the other side, it may be more challenging to find sharing technology in the classroom. One of the ways is to use new technologies like Augmented Reality (AR). The current study aims to develop usability principles for the development and evaluation of education using AR technology applications. We develop usability principles for AR applications by analyzing existing research about heuristic evaluation methods, design principles for AR systems.

  • In this paper, we propose CAMAR Core Platform as a framework for context-aware mobile augmented reality system development after brief introduction of limitations in the previous mobile augmented reality (AR). There have been many research activities on mobile AR due to recent enhancement of functionalities of mobile devices and development of relevant technologies to mobile augmented reality. In order to be used in ubiquitous computing environment, however, mobile AR systems should be able to utilize available contextual information, augment personalized contents, and share the augmented contents with other users. Thus, the proposed CAMAR Core Platform can provide such functionalities to those who want to develop CAMAR systems. To show the feasibility of the proposed framework, we show several applications based on the framework.
