  • The absorption coefficients of the materials used in a 1:50 scale model multipurpose hall were measured based on ISO 354 and related laws. The shape and materials for the scale model were evaluated based on reflective surfaces, variable acoustic elements and sound-absorbing quality (125Hz-1kHz average) of seats. The measured average absorption coefficients of audience seats, audience and orchestra were 0.64, 0.74 and 0,45, respectively, which were simulated with the combination of wood, absorption materials and foam board. Various mounting methods for absorption curtain and banner were considered according to the installation methods. The average absorption coefficient was measured as 0.42, 0.47 and 0.45 in the conditions of Type A mounting, E mounting with 0.9 m backing air cavity, and Type G mounting which is suspended at the ceiling, respectively. It was confirmed that the absorption coefficient was increased at low frequency by backing air gap. The finishing material of stage house was an absorption material covered with thin fabric, which aimed average absorption coefficient of 0.68 by using fiber glass board. Each part of the real materials was compared with those of 1:50 scale model and it was found that the absorption characteristics of both cases were similar.

  • Because structural systems are becoming lighter and more flexible and have lower natural frequencies and dampings than before, coordinated rhythmic activities such as dancing, audience participation in arenas or concert halls, and aerobics result in undesirable levels of vibration. For rhythmic activities, it is resonant or near resonant behavior that result in significant dynamic amplification and hence human discomfort. The most rational design strategy is to provide enough of a gap between the natural frequency of a floor system and the dominant frequencies excited by planned human activities to assure reasonably that resonance will not occur. For the case study the vibration measurements were performed at the floor of a long-span multi-purpose hall during the rock concert of popular singer.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest that performers in the performing arts actively utilize the loading dock and stage door when evacuating from the stage space of a performance hall in a crisis situation. Therefore, first, we analyzed the system related to the performance hall's safety. The stage evacuation type was classified into A, B, C, and D forms by applying the building law audience evacuation standards. Second, statistical data were organized based on measurement data, and the characteristics of each form were summarized. Third, the network reliability measurement method was borrowed to evaluate the evacuation safety of the evacuation route in the stage space. We confirmed quantitatively that the direction of the loading dock direction and stage door direction on the stage is advantageous for evacuation. In this study, it was possible to distinguish the advantage of evacuation according to the type of evacuation, (A(0.1274)>B(0.1228).>.C(0.0487)) with A being the most advantageous. These results can be expected to improve the evacuation safety of the stage, and furthermore, they are expected to be used as basic data for stage evacuation.

  • The characteristics of performing arts differ from those of utilitarian goods in terms of economics. Factors other than price need to be considered to understand the demand for performing arts. Audience surveys as well as econometric demand studies have confirmed that socio-economic factors such as age, income, employment, and education are major determinants of the demand for performing arts. This study focused on the attributes of concerts rather than consumer characteristics to determine the concerts audiences select in terms of transaction cost. Genre, price, internet search trends, and the purpose of performance as well as price are tested as determinants of demand by using the data set for a major concert hall in Seoul. Genre and the specific purpose of concerts influence the demand for concerts. Internet search trends of the performer are used as indicators of popularity and information exposure, which are positively correlated with demand. This result supports the hypothesis that larger audiences would attend concerts that require lower information search costs. To note, price has a positive effect on demand in the higher price range, which means that concerts at higher prices attract larger audiences, whereas normal goods have a negative slope in the demand curve. This result can be explained by the hypothesis that consumers use price as an indicator of the quality expected of a concert. Transaction cost for selecting classical concerts thus forms an inverse-U shape curve against ticket price. These results provide some explanation of why audiences of classical music choose to attend concerts at high ticket prices while offering evidence in favor of the hypothesis that performing arts are selected in a social context.

  • This paper examines the historical meaning and value of sound art curating as a key type of interdisciplinary and convergence art practice that has been unfolding since the mid-20th century. Accordingly, this paper summarizes the developmental process from the beginning of 'sound art' to the present, but examines the context of visual art in which the material 'sound' functioned in chronological order, and focuses on curating cases of major sound art exhibitions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact and contemporary significance of the provided aesthetic experience. To this end, the text is divided into three sections and developed. The first section recognizes that the late 19th century futurist and Dadaist sound poetry, followed by Marcel Duchamp's 1913 attempt to combine musical score with visual art, had a profound influence on the visual music of avant-garde composer John Cage. This explains why this background caused the emergence of exhibitions dealing with 'sound' as a new medium. The second section explains that in the 1970s, sound as an artistic medium played a role in reflecting the critical relationship with the exhibition space dominated by visuality. In the third section, we analyze the curatorial methodology that allows the audience to experience sound as if it were a visual object within the organization of the exhibition hall from the 1980s to the present. Through this process, this paper critically treats the historical practice of customizing the perceptual structure in the exhibition hall, and considers the meaningful methodology of sound art curating considering the role of sound full of vitality in the contemporary art scene.

  • Recently, we designed an interactive virtual space for the multi-purpose hall in Songdo Future City, located in Incheon, Korea. The goal of the design is to make a virtual space that is flexible and can be adjusted thanks to its unfixed seats in order to accommodate different and unspecified audience sizes. Virtual images are interactively adjusted according to the distance, position and size of audiences, information about which is detected by 9 photo sensors. To increase the sense of immersion, intensity and reality, we utilized the technology of scent display that can create appropriate scents to match the images on the screen. The intensity and persistence of scents were determined by the size, distance and position of audiences. The virtual image contains background images and reactive images. The background images repeatedly project images of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The reactive images consist of small portraits or pictures or icons that define or characterize the season types, and these are added to the background image according to the distance, position and size of the audiences.

  • This study is to comprehend the interior space of the Royal Palace in the 15th Century, the early years of Joseon Dynasty. The subject of this study is limited to the center of the Royal Palace, that is Jeongjeon(正殿, the royal audience chamber) and Haengrang(行廊, which encloses Jeongjeon on four sides and has many rooms). It is very important to understand the usage of the interior space because the architectural space consists of the space unified by the organic function of the interior and the exterior space. But there are few studies on the interior space of Jeongjeon and Haengrang at the Royal Palace. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the interior space of those buildings. The result of this study is following. Haengrang has several uses such as a night duty room, a storehouse, a government office or a banquet hall etc. So the interior spaces were finished with various methods that were suitable for the use of each room, and the material of the floor were the ground, Maru(the wooden floor) or Ondol(the Korean traditional heating system) There were held many kinds of ceremonies in Jeongjeon, and the government officials could not enter the inside of that building and took part in the ceremony on the front court of Jeongjeon, except the men performing the ceremony. But the high ranking officials could enter the inside when King gave a banquet and there, they prostrated themselves before King. They sat down with their legs crossed on the ground floor instead of sitting on a chair. When King held tea ceremony with Chinese envoys in Jeongjeon, they sat on Gyoui(交倚, a kind of armchair). Then, the government officials performing the ceremony in Jeongjeon prostrated himself around the King and the Chinese envoys and others stood around them.
