  • In this study, data on the types and density of abalone attached organisms were provided in marine net cage of the southern coast. In addition, the effect of the removal of attached organisms was evaluated. In marine net cage, oysters, bryozoa, and barnacles were dominated among the attached organisms, and their average area ratio was about 57.5%. The growth rate and hepatopancreas condition were better in removal group of attached organisms than control group. Therefore, it is judged that the removal of attached organisms from abalone is necessary for the growth of individuals and improvement of value.

  • A survey was conducted to investigate the presence of epiphytic organisms in four kelp Saccharina japonica farms in the coastal area of Korea from 2014 to 2015. Of 740 kelp samples that were taken, 208 exhibited six kinds of epiphytic organisms, including hydroid (detection rate: 11.6%), bryozoan (6.4%), polychaete (3.4%), algae (3.2%), caprellid (3%), and oyster (0.5%). The infestation rate for hydroid, bryozoan, and polychaete was significantly higher in the Wando farm, Busan farm, and Pohang farm, respectively. Epiphytic organisms were generally observed during May to September and not January to April, indicating that their infestation was significantly higher when the water had a higher temperature. The histopathogical examination revealed that hydroid and bryozoan organisms were attached on the cuticula of the thallus while some algae were attached on the cuticula of the thallus or had penetrated the epidermis. These results indicate that hydroid and bryozoan were the most predominant epiphytic organisms in Korean kelp farms, even though the infested thallus had not been broken.

  • Distribution features of foulers attached on 28 ships of 6 main shipping routes (SR) of the Far East Sea Basin were analyzed using various statistical methods. Collections obtained during 1976-1990 in the expeditions by the Institute of Marine Biology were used for the analyses. Samples were taken from the ships during anchorage by SCUBA diving and from dry-docks of Vladivostok ship-repairing yard. In all cases, the distribution patterns of most animals and algal species showed clear contagious patterns. Total biomass of fouling organisms and biomass of attached animals frequently increased along the horizontal direction of ship hulls, from the stem to the sternpost. Animal and algal species were usually located at different sites of the hulls. According to the increasing floating speed, there was, a clear tendency of the displacement in main fouling biomass from the stem to the stem. Any generalizations and deductions concerning the distribution patterns of the foulers from the same SR ships are not always substantiated, but one may see some similarities of the fouler distributions in many cases. Micro-scale turbulence generated by water flow around a ship hull for the distribution of fouling organisms is discussed.

  • We studied the organisms attached to Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay from November 2007 to June 2008. The water temperature ranged from 3.3 to $28.7^{\circ}C$ and salinity from 30.6 to 33.8 psu. Eighteen species $143,432\;ind./m^2$ were sampled during study periods. The biomass of the Sargassum beds ranged from a highest of $196.08\;g\;dw/m^2$ in March to a lowest of $0\;g\;dw/m^2$ in July. The major dominant species were Barleeia angustata ($134,430\;ind./m^2$), Caprellidae sp.($2,443\;ind./m^2$) and Gammaridae sp.($4,201\;ind./m^2$). The ecological indices of diversity, evenness, and richness were 0.11-0.86, 0.04-0.39, and 0.74-1.06, respectively.

  • Studies of fouling organisms in Deukryang Bay in 1981 showed that amphipod crustaceans comprised the most abundant zoological group. Three tubicolous gammaridean amphipods, Jassa falcata (Montagu, 1808) Corophium acherusicum (Costa, 1857) and Ericthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853) were described. They formed great masses of silty tubes attached to plastic and cement experimental plates. The ecological aspects of these fouling organisms have been also discussed.

  • New Paint, Stapol N-6200D, products from Song Woun Industrial Co. Ltd., was tested on its chemical effect on fouling organisms attached to fishing nets. Two kinds of fishing nets with different mesh size, 5 mm (cage culture net) and 33 mm (set net) were painted and attached to $1m^2$ PVC quadrates. The quadrates with painted or non-painted fishing nets were placed at the surface water layer of southern coast of Korea. Monthly species composition and abundance of fouling organisms were analysed as well as total weight of fouling organisms including mud on fishing nets. On the other hand, anti-fouling effect of the organisms and mud on different color paints was studied and the durability of chemical effect of painted fishing net on fouling organisms was also estimated.

  • Recently, the pop-up satellite archival tag (PSAT) is being used in studies as a method of using satellites for monitoring organisms. Because PSATs are attached directly on the organism being monitored, it is used mostly on larger species since the health of the organism is an important concern. For this reason, PSAT-based surveys are lacking in Korea with no studies on the physiological responses of organisms with PSAT attached. Accordingly, as a basic biomonitoring study using PSAT, the present study investigated the physiological changes in fish in response to the attachment of PSAT. The present study used red seabream (Pagrus major) and Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) as the experimental fish. The PSAT was attached to the muscle below the experimental fish's dorsal fin using a mono filament (n = 3). To investigate the changes in physiological responses according to PSAT attachment, blood samples were collected from all experimental fish, including the control (n = 3), at 1, 7, 14 and 21 days after the attachment. Upon blood sample collection, whole blood was used to measure hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. After separating the plasma, the separated plasma was used to measure the GOT, GPT, glucose, total protein, and cholesterol levels. Meanwhile, the plasma cortisol, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels were measured using the ELISA method. The results showed that attaching the tag did not have any impact on the immunity and stress response of the experimental fish. The findings in this study also demonstrated the possibility of using PSAT for studying relatively smaller species living in the coastal waters of Korea.

  • Light-microscope studies of the coccidial organisms found in the bursa of Fabricius from chickens shelwng some specific signs were carried out, and the etiological agent was estimated as the parasite belonging to the Family Cryptosporiidae. The specific gross Pathological signs were intestinal hemorrhage and atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius and hyperplasia was associated with the presence of organisms attached to the epithelial cells lining the plicae of the bursa of Fabricius in the microscopical findings.

  • The purpose of this study is to use organisms or micro-organism functions for eco-friendly water-purification of cement bricks, utilizing bioremediation. Many researches have been performed in the past to improve water quality by using effective micro-organisms in construction materials. In order to purify water using micro-organisms, this research used soybean paste bacteria, an effective micro-organism that was identified through 16S rDNA sequence analysis performed in Daegu S. Environment Protection Institute in addition to Natto bacteria that was studied in the previous research. With these effective micro-organisms with water-purification ability, this study examined their water-purification possibility on cement bricks. This study used Zeolite to immobilize micro-organisms to bricks, and confirmed that the micro-organisms were attached on Zeolite from SEM analysis. The experimental results showed that specific micro-organisms can be used to effectively remove contamination an used to develop eco-friendly construction materials. The study on micro-organisms for material purification shows great promises as a future research topic.
