  • Interaction of the the rust fungus Puccinia miscanthi with the biofuel plant Miscanthus sinensis during the teliospore phase was investigated by light and electron microscopy. P. miscanthi telia were oval-shaped and present on both the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces. Teliospores were brown, one-septate (two-celled), and had pedicels attached to one end. Transmission electron microscopy revealed numerous electron-translucent lipid globules in the cytoplasm of teliospores. Extensive cell wall dissolution around hyphae was not observed in the host tissues beneath the telia. Hyphae were found between mesophyll cells in the leaf tissues as well as in host cells. Intracellular hyphae, possibly haustoria, possessed electron-dense fungal cell walls encased by an electron-transparent fibrillar extrahaustorial sheath that had an electron-dense extrahaustorial membrane. The infected host cells appeared to maintain their membrane-bound structures such as nuclei and chloroplasts. These results suggest that the rust fungus maintains its biotrophic phase with most mesophyll cells of M. sinensis. Such a nutritional mode would permit the rust fungus to obtain food reserves for transient growth in the course of host alteration.

  • Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with spherical and prism morphologies were formed at room temperature depend on the amino acid attached with phenolic unit. Absorption studies showed 410-420 nm surface plasmon resonance absorption for spherical nanoparticles whereas prism morphology showed three absorption peaks (382, 452 and 523 nm). The formation of spherical and prism morphology was confirmed by scanning and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Antibacterial studies of both the morphologies did not show any significant differences in the inhibition of bacterial growth.

  • This paper reports a result of numerical heat transfer analysis for heat spreader with various ribs. Four different ribs are compared in this study. In general, the heat transfer on a vertical plate is enhanced when a rib is attached as the surface area increases, and the growth of the boundary layer is interrupted. However, for a low flow less than 0.1m/s, it is observed that the heat transfer is sensitive to the height of a rib: it decreases as the height increases. Among the four ribs, the H-shaped rib showed better performance than other ribs.

  • In case of spot-welded joints, the fatigue cracks generally originate from the weld interfaces of the neighborhood nugget tips, and propagate toward the outer surfaces of the sheets. Generally, because fatigue crack was observed in nugget around, strain gage was attached at nugget zone. Accordingly, it was very difficult to detect the generation time of fatigue crack in spot-welded joints and to measure the propagation speed of fatigue crack. We developed the non-destructive method, according to which th fatigue crack propagation rate can be quantitatively estimated by utilizing information obtained from strain gages bonded on the electrode indentations of spot welds. The results measured by real crack were compared with the data which was measured by strain gauge method in fatigue testing. And so fatigue strength was evaluated by stress intensity factor. In this study behavior of fatigue crack propagation under repeated load were considered.

  • The characteristics of elastic waves emanated from crack initiation in 6061 aluminum alloy subjected to fatigue loading are investigated through experiments. The objective of the study is to determine the differences in the properties of the signals generated from fatigue test and also to examine if the sources of the waves could be identified from the temporal and spectral characteristics of the acoustic emission (AE) waveforms. The signals are recorded using nonresonant, flat, broadband transducers attached to the surface of the alloy specimens. The time dependence and power spectra of the signals recorded during the tests were examined and classified according to their special features. Six distinct types of signals were observed. The waveforms and their power spectra were found to be dependent on the crack propagation stage and the type of fracture associated with the signals. The potential application of the approach in health monitoring of structural components using a network of surface mounted broadband sensors is discussed.

  • Primary anaplastic oligodendroglioma in brain stem is extremely rare. The authors present a case of a anaplastic oligodendroglioma arising from pons. A 29 year-old male patient was admitted because of cranial nerve palsy and visual disturbance. Neurological examination revealed bilateral sixth and left seventh cranial nerve plasies. Near-total resection of tumor mass was performed through midline suboccipital appraoch. Tumor was not related with choroid plexus and major vessels but it was firmly attached to the fourth ventricle floor. Tumor was considered to be arised from the tegmental portion of pons, growing dorsally into the 4th ventricle. Hitopathological exmination revealed primary anaplastic oligodendroglioma. Postoperative course was uneventful. The authors believe that this type of tumor with dorsally growing pattern can be successfully resected without major neurological deficit.

  • Biodegradation of toluene in liquid effluent stream was carried out using biofilms of Pseudomonas putida formed on celite particles in the bubble column bioreactor. Silicon rubber tubing was installed at the bottom of the bioreactor and liquid toluene was circulated within the tubing. Toluene diffused out of the tube wall and was transferred into the culture broth where degradation by biofilms occurred. The operating variables affecting the formation of biofihns on celite particles were investigated in the bubble column bioreactor, and it was found that formation of bifilm is favored by high dilution rate and supply rate of carbon source which stimulate the growth of initially attached cells. Continuous biodegradation of toluene using biofilms was stablely conducted in the bioreactor for more than one month without any significant fluctuation, showing a removal efficiency higher than 95% at the toluene transfer rate of 1.2 g/L/h.

  • MFI zeolite membranes were prepared on anodic alumina (Anodisc) as support. First, silicalite-1(${\approx}1.2{\mu}m$) seed crystals were attached to the surface of the support via chemical bonding, and the a- and b-axis oriented zeolite membranes could be synthesized on the support coated with the monolayer of the seed crystals by secondary growth hydrothermal synthesis. The zeolite membranes prepared were characterized using scanning electron microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction.
