  • In this study, the changes in the chemical structure and the physical property of fluoropolymer films (PTFE, FEP, PFA, PVDF, and ETFE) induced by $Co^{60}$ gamma ray in air, $N_2$, and vacuum environments were investigated. FTIR spectra of the irradiated fluoropolymers indicate that the oxidation proceeded by the reaction of radicals generated by irradiation with oxygen in air. The changes in the heat of fusion and the degree of crystallinity of the irradiated fluoropolymers were investigated using DSC and the results indicate that the scission and crosslinking reactions of the irradiated fluoropolymers were largely influenced by the chemical structure. It was also found that the mechanical property of the irradiated fluoropolymer films under an air atmosphere was significantly decreased.

  • Labelling auflatoxines, the potential carcinogenic compounds, by radioactive iodine has been studied. The auflatoxine-$B_1$, which is known to be the most abundant components of auflatoxines in the nature, was labelled by radioactive iodine-125 through an acid catalyst chloroamine-T procedure. The radiochemical yield was amounted to 63.6%. The chemical structure of the labelled product was proved to be 6-iodo 5-methoxy coumarine structure of auflatoxine-$B_1$ molecule by means of I.R. and N.M.R. spectroscopy. The labelled product was orally administered in a test animal (Rat) and examined the accumnulation of radioactivity in the body at the definite time interval. The accumnulation of the radioactivity was pronounced at the blood and the liver. There was no indication of the decomposition of auflatoxine-$B_1-^{125}I$ in the organs of the test animal.

  • For the programming volume of PRAM, Ge2Sb2Te5(GST) thin films have been dominantly used and prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD). Among these methods, ALD is particularly considered as the most promising technique for the integration of PRAM because the ALD offers a superior conformality to PVD and CVD methods and a digital thickness control precisely to the atomic level since the film is deposited one atomic layer at a time. Meanwhile, although the IST has been already known as an optical data storage material, recently, it is known that the IST benefits multistate switching behavior, meaning that the IST-PRAM can be used for mutli-level coding, which is quite different and unique performance compared with the GST-PRAM. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a possibility of the IST materials for the application of PRAM. So far there are many attempts to deposit the IST with MOCVD and PVD. However, it has not been reported that the IST can be deposited with the ALD method since the ALD reaction mechanism of metal organic precursors and the deposition parameters related with the ALD window are rarely known. Therefore, the main aim of this work is to demonstrate the ALD process for IST films with various precursors and the conformal filling of a nano size programming volume structure with the ALD?IST film for the integration. InSbTe (IST) thin films were deposited by ALD method with different precursors and deposition parameters and demonstrated conformal filling of the nano size programmable volume of cell structure for the integration of phase change random access memory (PRAM). The deposition rate and incubation time are 1.98 A/cycle and 25 cycle, respectively. The complete filling of nano size volume will be useful to fabricate the bottom contact type PRAM.

  • A lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) system is a promising nondestructive assay technique that enables a quantitative measurement of the isotopic contents of major fissile isotopes in spent nuclear fuel and its pyroprocessing counterparts, such as $^{235}U$, $^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Pu$, and, potentially, minor actinides. The LSDS system currently under development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (Daejeon, Korea) is planned to utilize a high-flux ($>10^{12}n/cm^2{\cdot}s$) neutron source comprised of a high-energy (30 MeV)/high-current (~2 A) electron beam and a heavy metal target, which results in a very intense and complex radiation field for the facility, thus demanding structural shielding to guarantee the safety. Optimization of the structural shielding design was conducted using MCNPX for neutron dose rate evaluation of several representative hypothetical designs. In order to satisfy the construction cost and neutron attenuation capability of the facility, while simultaneously achieving the aimed dose rate limit (< $0.06{\mu}Sv/h$), a few shielding materials [high-density polyethylene (HDPE)eBorax, $B_4C$, and $Li_2CO_3$] were considered for the main neutron absorber layer, which is encapsulated within the double-sided concrete wall. The MCNP simulation indicated that HDPE-Borax is the most efficient among the aforementioned candidate materials, and the combined thickness of the shielding layers should exceed 100 cm to satisfy the dose limit on the outside surface of the shielding wall of the facility when limiting the thickness of the HDPE-Borax intermediate layer to below 5 cm. However, the shielding wall must include the instrumentation and installation holes for the LSDS system. The radiation leakage through the holes was substantially mitigated by adopting a zigzag-shape with concrete covers on both sides. The suggested optimized design of the shielding structure satisfies the dose rate limit and can be used for the construction of a facility in the near future.

  • The electronic state and chemical bonding of $\beta$-MnO$_2$ with transition metal dopants were theoretically investigated by DV-X$_{\alpha}$ (the discrete variational X$_{\alpha}$) method, which is a sort of the first principles molecular orbital method using the Hartree-Fock-Slater approximation. The calculations were performed with a $_Mn_{14}$ MO$_{56}$ )$^{-52}$ (M = transition metals) cluster model. The electron energy level, the density of states (DOS), the overlap population, the charge density distribution, and the net charges, were calculated. The energy level diagram of MnO$_2$ shows the different band structure and electron occupancy between the up spin states and down spin states. The dopant levels decrease between the conduction band and the valence band with the increase of the atomic number of dopants. The covalency of chemical bonding was shown to increase and ionicity decreased in increasing the atomic number of dopants. Calculated results were discussed on the basis of the interaction between transition metal 3d and oxygen 2p orbital. In conclusion it is expected that when the transition metals are added to MnO$_2$ the band gap decreases and the electronic conductivity increases with the increase of the atomic number of dopants. the atomic number of dopants.

  • In assessing the seismic safety of nuclear power plants, it is essential to analyze the structures using the observed ground motion. In particular, spatial variation in which the characteristics of the ground motion record differ may occur if the location is different within the site and even if the same earthquake is experienced. This study analyzed the spatial variation characteristics of the ground motion observed at the structure and site using the earthquake records measured at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant. Even if they were located on the same floor within the same unit, there was a difference in response depending on the location. In addition, amplification was observed in Unit 5 compared to other units, which was due to the rock layer having a slower shear wave velocity than the surrounding bedrock. Significant differences were also found in the records of the structure's foundation and the free-field surface. Based on these results, the necessity of considering spatial variation in the observed records was suggested.

  • The transport of radionuclides in a compacted bentonite is dominated by diffusion. Through-diffusion tests for iodide were performed to investigate the diffusion characteristics of anionic radionuclides in a domestic bentonite. The bentonite used was sampled from the southeastern area of Korea and the solution was synthetic groundwater spiked with a tracer of I -125(as Na$^{125}$ I). The dry densities of compacted bentonite were 1.2, 1.4, and 1.7 Mg/㎥. The apparent diffusion coefficients and the effective diffusion coefficients of the iodide decrease with increasing dry density. The values were from 3.80 to 7.12$\times$10$^{-11}$ $m^2$/s for the apparent diffusion coefficients and from 1.25 to 7.97$\times$10$^{-12}$ $m^2$/s for the effective diffusion coefficient, respectively. The experimental results also showed that the apparent diffusion coefficients depended on the pore structure of compacted bentonite and the effective diffusion coefficients were attributed to the pore structure and the effective porosity that represents the available pathway for the diffusional transport of iodide. The results obtained will be used as basic data for the safety assessment of a repository.
