  • Transparent conducting undoped and Al impurity doped ZnO films were deposited on glass substrate by spin coat technique using 24 days aged ZnO precursor solution with solution of ethanol and diethanolamine. The films were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electrical resistivity ($\rho$), carrier concentration (n), and hall mobility ($\mu$) measurements. XRD data show that the deposited film shows polycrystalline nature with hexagonal wurtzite structure with preferential orientation along (002) crystal plane. The SEM images show that surface morphology, porosity and grain sizes are affected by doping concentration. The Al doped samples show high transmittance and better resistivity. With increasing Al concentration only mild change in optical band gap is observed. Optical properties are not affected by aging of parent solution. A lowest resistivity ($8.5 \times 10^{-2}$ ohm cm) is observed at 2 atomic percent (at.%) Al. With further increase in Al concentration, the resistivity started to increase significantly. The decrease resistivity with increasing Al concentration can be attributed to increase in both carrier concentration and hall mobility.

  • Two dimensional (2D) arrays of noble metal nanoparticles are widely used in the sensing of nanoscale biological and chemical events. Research in this area has sparked considerable interest in many fields owing to the novel optical properties, e.g., the localized surface plasmon resonance, of these metallic nanoarrays. In this paper, we report successes in fabricating 2D arrays of gold nano-islands using nanosphere lithography. The reproducibility and the effectiveness of the nano-patterning method are tested by means of spin coating and capillary force deposition. We found that the capillary force deposition method was more effective for nanospheres with diameters greater than 600 nm, whereas the spin coating method works better for nanospheres with diameters less than 600 nm. The optimal deposition parameters for both methods were reported, showing about 80% reproducibility. In addition, we characterize gold nano-island arrays both geometrically with AFM as well as optically with UV-VIS spectrometry. The AFM images revealed that the obtained nano-arrays formed a hexagonal pattern of truncated tetrahedron nano-islands. The experimental and theoretical values of the geometric parameters were compared. The 2D gold nano-arrays showed strong LSPR in the absorption spectra. As the nano-islands increased in size, the LSPR absorption bands became red-shifted. Linear dependence of the plasmon absorption maximum on the size of the gold nano-islands was identified through the increment in the plasmon absorption maximum rate for a one nanometer increase in the characteristic length of the nano-islands. We found that the 2D gold nano-arrays showed nearly seven-fold higher sensitivity of the absorption spectrum to the size of the nano-islands as compared to colloidal gold nano-particles.

  • Wide band gap II-VI semiconductors have attracted the interest of many research groups during the past few years due to the possibility of their applications in light-emitting diodes and laser diodes. Among the II-VI semiconductors, ZnO is an important optoelectronic device material for use in the violet and blue regions because of its wide direct band gap (Eg ~3.37 eV) and large exciton binding energy (60 meV). F-doped ZnO (FZO) and undoped ZnO thin films were grown onto quartz substrate by the sol-gel spin-coating method. The doping level in the solution, designated by F/Zn atomic ratio of was varied from 0 to 5 in 1 steps. To investigate the effects of the structure and optical properties of FZO thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). In the XRD, the residual stress, FWHM, bond length, and average grain size were changed with increasing the doping concentration. For the PL spectra, the high INBE/IDLE ratio of the FZO thin films doping concentration at 1 at.% than the other samples.

  • Magnetic properties and crystallographic properties of $Cu_{1-x}Ge_{1-y}Fe_{x+y}O_3$ system were studied by using x-ray diffraction, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. All the samples have orthorhombic structure and the lattice constants some decreased as the substituted iron contents increasing. The spin-Peierls (SP) transition temperature of our samples are about 12.5 K and these temperatures lowered as increasing substituted iron contents. The Mossbauer spectra consisted with two Zeeman sextets and one doublet due to $Fe^{3+}$ ions. The jump up of magnetic hyperfine field of 2nd Zeeman sextet and the increasing of the values of quadrapole splitting and isomer shift of doublet below SP transition temperature could be interpreted with the variation of the superexchange interaction, the symmetry of lattice sites and the covalency of bonds due to the atomic displacements.

  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence(TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses were conducted to detect irradiation treatment of aloe vera powder, which was gamma-irradiated at 1, 3, 5 and 7 kGy. The non-irradiated aloe vera powder indicated below 700 of photon count in PSL, whereas, irradiated at 1 kGy and more, it showed more than 5,000 photon counts, indicating that it is feasible to detect the irradiation of aloe vera powder through PSL In the result of TL, from the minerals of the samples that were irradiated at more than 1 kGy, TL glow curve was able to be seen at around $150^{\circ}C$. As the quantity of irradiation goes up, the ratio of $TL_1\;and\;TL_2$ also increased in proportion to that of irradiation. In the result of ESR analysis, unspecific centeral ESR signal was could be seen. As the amount of irradiation on the samples increased to the level of $R^2=0.97$, the signal intensity also rose similarly. In conclusion, the PSL, TL and ESR exhibited the typical signals induced by irradiation treatment and were able to successfully detect all of the irradiated aloe vera powder. In addition, we found a positive correlation between the intensity of ESR and TL signals and irradiation doses.

  • Physical detection methods, photostimulated luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) were applied to detect electron beam-irradiated agricultural products, such as red pepper, black pepper, raisin, walnut, beef seasoning and pistachio. The absorbed irradiation doses for representative samples were controled at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 10 kGy. PSL values for non-irradiated samples were <700 counts/60s (lower threshold, $T_1$) except beef seasoning, whereas those of irradiated samples were more than 5,000 photon counts, upper threshold ($T_2$) in black pepper, raisin, and beef seasoning and intermediates values of $T_1-T_2$ in red pepper, walnut, and pistachio. Minerals seperated from the samples for TL measurement showed that non-irradiated samples except pistachio (TL ratio, 0.12) were characterized by no glow curves situated at temperature range of $50{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ with TL ratio (0.01~0.08), while irradiated samples except pistachio at only 1 kGy (TL ratio, 0.08) indicated glow curve at about $150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ with TL ratio (0.28~3.10). ESR measurements of irradiated samples showed any specific signals to irradiation. The samples of both red pepper and pistachio were produced specific signals derived from cellulose radicals as well as single line signals for black pepper and walnut, and multiple signals derived from crystalline sugar radicals for raisin and beef seasoning. In conclusion, The ESR methods can apply for detection of pistachio exposed to electron beam but PSL and TL are not suitable methods. Furthermore, TL and ESR suggeted that both techniques were more useful detection method than PSL to confirm whether red pepper, walnut and beef seasoning samples have been exposed to electron beam.

  • A solid-state reaction of $MoO_3$ with as-synthesized H-SAPO-34 generated paramagnetic Mo(V) species. The dehydration resulted in weak Mo(V) species, and subsequent activation resulted in the formation of Mo(V) species such as $Mo(V)_{5c}$ and $Mo(V)_{6c}$ that are characterized by ESR. The data of ESR and ESEM show the oxomolybdenum species, to be $(MoO_2)^+$ or $(MoO)^{3+}$. The $(MoO_2)^+$ species seems to be more probable. Since H-SAPO-34 has a low framework negative charge, $(MoO)^{3+}$ with a high positive charge can not be easily stabilized. A solution reaction between the solution of silico-molybdic acid and calcined H-SAPO-34 resulted in only $(MoO_2)^+$ species. A rhombic ESR signal is observed on adsorption of $D_2O$, $CD_3OH$, $CH_3Ch_2OD$ and $ND_3$. The Location and coordination structure of Mo(V) species has been determined by three-pulse electron spin-echo modulation data and their simulations. After the adsorption of methanol, ethylene, ammonia, and water for MoH-SAPO-34, three molecules, one molecule, one and one molecule, respectively, are directly coordinated to $(MoO_2)^+)$.

  • The identification characteristics of irradiated commercial Ramen soup were investigated depending on radiation sources and doses by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Two commercial powder soups (RS-1, RS-2) were irradiated at 0 to 20 kGy under ambient conditions by both a Co-60 gamma irradiator and an electron beam (EB) accelerator, respectively. Crystalline sugar-induced multi-component signals with g-values of 2.010/2.011, 2.006, 2.002 and 1.999 were detected in the irradiated Ramen soup (RS-1, RS-2), whereas $Mn^{2+}$ signals were observed in non-irradiated samples, thereby distinguishing each other. Under the same analytical conditions, the intensity of ESR signals was higher in EB-irradiated samples than the gamma-irradiated ones. Determination coefficients ($R^2$) between irradiation doses and corresponding ESR responses were above 0.9665 in all the samples, and the magnetic field of specified g-value remained constant. The predominant ESR signals of $g_2$ (2.010-2.011) and $g_3$ (2.002) increased with corresponding doses of irradiation ($R^2$= 0.9750-0.9981).

  • The magnetism of the Fe monolayer on Ir(001) substrate [Fe/Ir(001)] was investigated by the first-principles energy band method. For comparison, the Fe and Ir ordered-alloyed monolayer on Ir(001) [Fe$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$/Ir(001)] was also considered. The calculated magnetic moments for Fe atoms in Fe/Ir(001) system and Fe$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$/Ir(001) system are 2.95 and 2.83 bohr magnetons, respectively. The detailed aspects of the magnetism and electronic structures for these systems are discussed with the calculated denisty of states and spin densities. The optimized atomic sites for the overlayer Fe and Ir atoms were determined by the total energy and atomic force calculations. The Fe atoms in Fe/Ir(001) move closer to the substrate Ir layer than the Fe atoms in Fe$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$/Ir(001) do to the Ir substrate.
