  • The purpose of this study is to develop an ozone passive sampler and to evaluate its performance p-Acetamidophenol using as the reagent for ozone reacts specifically with the ambient ozone to produce a fluorescence material (p-acetamidopheonl dimer). The volume of absorbent solution and the extraction time determined at suitable conditions for measuring ozone were 100$\mu$L and 60 min, respectively. The changes of fluorescence were observed with incresing the storage period of passive samplers in ambient air. but the cool storage in a refrigerator did not remarkably influence the increase of fluorescence. The measurement for the precision oi the passive sampling was carried out with duplicate measurement of passive samplers. The intra-class correlation coefficients of passive samplers using dry and wet filters were 0.992 and 0.962, respectively The results from field validation tests indicated practical agreement (dry filter: r=0.963, wet filter: r=0.995) between the passive sampler and an UV photometric $O_3$ analyzer. The limit of quantification of ozone passive samplers with sampling time of 8 hr (wet filter) and 24 hr (dry filter) were 8.0 ppb and 2.7 ppb, respectively.

  • The material exposure tests have been carried out since 1993 to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion with the cooperation of the researchers in Japan, China, and Korea. The test pieces such as bronze, copper, marble, and carbon steel have been exposed under both unsheltered and rain-sheltered outdoor condition separately at 18 sampling sites in East Asia. At the same time, the concentration of SO$_2$ and NO$_2$ has been measured simultaneously with passive sampler. The meteorological data were collected from the AWS (Auto-mated weather station) In each country and chemical compositions of wet deposition were also analyzed by the bulk sampling of rainfall every month. As the results, it was found that the corrosion rates of test pieces in the ambient air were appeared to be in the order of carbon steel > marble > bronze copper. The corrosion rates of test pieces in the unsheltered outdoor condition were 2.34 to 5.88 times larger than those in rain-sheltered condition. It was also found that the corrosion rate in the heavy polluted area in China was the highest, and the corrosion rates of the metal pieces were generally proportional to SO$_2$ concentration. Between two sites in Korea, the test pieces at Daegu site showed higher corrosion rates that would be due to the higher SO$_2$ concentration.

  • In recent years there have been growing interests in the potential environmental effects of global climate change. Of specific interests is the role that climate change may play in altering natural volatile organic compound.(NVOC) emissions from trees and the subsequent impact of this perturbation on air quality and ozone formation. A novel vegetation enclosure chamber method was designed and constructed of Tedlar in order to estimate more accurate and precise NVOC emission rates of either small whole plants or the branches of large trees. The enclosure chamber was initially tested in the laboratory and also successfully evaluated in the field. Overall precision for this enclosure was estimated as RSD<10%(n=9). The overall errors associated with the enclosure method in a laboratory system might be relatively small (say<$\pm$15%); however, they might be rather large(say$\pm$40%) in a field-based system. Two consecutive samples were collected on each sampling day from the two pine species during the test period. Slash pine studies showed that the absolute percentage difference between the first and second samples varied from 0.33 to 29%. The percent differences between consecutive emission for loblolly pines varied from 0.74 to 24.2%.

  • In this study, we investigated the applicability of a short-term carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) passive sampler using turbidity change in a solution containing barium hydroxide ($Ba(OH)_2$). The mass of $CO_2$ introduced into the $Ba(OH)_2$ aqueous solution was strongly correlated ($r^2=0.9565$) to the change in turbidity caused by its reaction with the solution. The sampling rates calculated for 1 h and 24 h were $42.4{\pm}5.4mL\;min^{-1}$ and $2.3{\pm}0.3mL\;min^{-1}$, respectively. Both unexposed (blank) and exposed samplers remained stable during the storage period of at least two weeks. The detection limits of the passive sampler for $CO_2$ were 81.5 ppm for 1 h and 61.5 ppm for 24 h. Based on the results, the passive sampler using the change of turbidity in the $Ba(OH)_2$ aqueous solution appears to be a suitable tool for measuring short-term atmospheric concentrations of $CO_2$.

  • A dual-channel glass coil sampling technique was used to measure hourly formaldehyde concentration in the ambient air. The dual-channel coil sampling assembly consists of three parts; an all-pyrex 28-turn coil made of 0.2-cm internal diameter glass tubing for gas-liquid contact and scrubbing of soluble gases, an inlet section upstream of the coil for introducing sample air and scrubbing solution, and a widened glass section downstream of the coil for gas-liquid separation. The scrubbing solution used was a dilute aqueous DNPH (dinitrophenylhydrazine) solution. Hourly concentration of formaldehyde was determined at a Gwangju semi-urban site during two intensive studies between September and October using the dual channel glass-coil/DNPH sampling technique and HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis. The mean concentration was 1.7($0.4{\sim}4.7$) and 3.0($0.5{\sim}19.1$) ppbv for the September and October intensives, respectively, which are considerably low, compared to those measured in polluted urban areas around the world including several urban areas of Korea. The diurnal variation showed significant increase of formaldehyde in the daytime suggesting the dominance of formation of formaldehyde due to photochemical oxidation of methane and other hydrocarbons. An increase in the formaldehyde sometimes in the night might be due to an increase in primary source, i.e. traffic emissions. It was also found that rapid increase in formaldehyde levels from 3.0 to 19.1 ppbv in the afternoon on October 20 was due to plumes from burning of agricultural wastes such as rice straw and stubble. It is expected from the measurement data that the constructed dual-channel glass coil sampling system can be utilized for measuring atmospheric concentration of the formaldehyde with high time resolution.

  • A model coupling a meteorological predictive model and a vegetation photosynthesis and respiration model was used to simulate $CO_2$ concentrations over coastal basin areas, and modeling results were estimated with aircraft observations during a massive sampling campaign. Along with the flight tracks, the model captured the meteorological variables of potential temperature and wind speed with mean bias results of $0.8^{\circ}C$, and 0.2 m/s, respectively. These results were statistically robust, which allowed for further estimation of the model's performance for $CO_2$ simulations. Two high-resolution emission data sets were adopted to determine $CO_2$ concentrations, and the results show that the model underestimated by 1.8 ppm and 0.9 ppm at higher altitude over the study areas during daytime and nighttime, respectively, on average. Overall, it was concluded that the model's $CO_2$ performance was fairly good at higher altitude over the study areas during the study period.

  • This research paper has been attempted to inventory the atmospheric factors, contributing to better sales. Exploratory study was undertaken to identify various signs of store atmospherics variables that influence the buying behaviour of buyers. Thirty-four variables identified from this study were used to create a structured questionnaire. This questionnaire was then administered among shoppers in NCR Delhi using non-probability convenience sampling. To determine the atmospheric factors, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) along with Varimax Rotation was attempted. Using principal component factor analysis on the data collected, nine factors were identified to have impact on the store atmospheric. These were Querulous, Music, Sensitive, Budget Seeker, Sensuous, Light, Idler, Space seeker and Comfort Seeker. Contrary to the various earlier studies where music, space seeker and comfort seeker were considered to be most significant factors, light and querulous have emerged out to be the major factor that influences the store atmospheric. This study shows that customers are sensitive, space seekers and sensuous. Constituents of these factors reveal distinct patterns. This research may be used as guidelines for development and management of shopping malls in emerging countries. Retail marketers in India can take this cue in designing their strategies to attract consumers.

  • Seven potentially harmful bifunctional carbonyls were measured in particulate and gaseous phases at a roadside site and a suburban site in an area about 30 km north-northwest from Tokyo metropolitan area in the Kanto region in Japan. For the first time, these compounds were measured in both phases with a time resolution of 2 h. We found that wind direction is an important parameter that affects the collection of these compounds near the source, and it can cover the effects of other important variables. Our results confirmed that motor vehicles and especially diesel fuelled vehicles are important sources of these compounds. Photochemical generation is also an important source of these compounds in the gaseous phase. Transportation from the urban area is also important, particularly in the aerosol phase.

  • Implemented at the Geochang Observatory in South Korea, our slope detection and ranging (SLO-DAR) system features a 508 mm Cassegrain telescope (f /7.8), incorporating two Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensors (WFS) for precise measurements of atmospheric phase distortions, particularly from nearby binary or double stars, utilizing an 8 × 8 grid of sampling points. With an ability to reconstruct eight-layer vertical atmospheric profiles, the system quantifies the refractive index structure function (Cn2) through the crossed-beam method. Adaptable in vertical profiling altitude, ranging from a few hundred meters to several kilometers, contingent on the separation angle of binary stars, the system operates in both wide (2.5 to 12.5 arcminute separation angle) and narrow modes (11 to 15 arcsecond separation angle), covering altitudes from 122.3 to 611.5 meters and 6.1 to 8.3 kilometers, respectively. Initial measurements at the Geochang Observatory indicated Cn2 values up to 181.7 meters with a Fried parameter (r0) of 8.4 centimeters in wide mode and up to 7.8 kilometers with an r0 of 8.0 centimeters in narrow mode, suggesting similar seeing conditions to the Bohyun Observatory and aligning with a comparable 2014-2015 seeing profiling campaign in South Korea.

  • Using a successive removal approach the mechanism of sampling capture efficiency of blue crabs by dredges was studied in Chesapeake Bay during winter 1992. For the twenty-six field experiments no significant statistical differences were detected in dredge efficiency using general linear model analysis by factors including bottom sediments, water depths, and sampling vessels. Dredge efficiency (i.e., catchability) was estimated by two methods, Leslie (Leslie and Davis, 1939) and a simple revised method. Mean catchability was estimated at 0.26 (SE=0.03), indicating that only $26\%$($95\%\;C. I.=20{\sim}32\%$) of crabs present in the path of the dredge of a given sampling area are caught with a single dredge tow. Dredge efficiency declined exponentially as crab density increased.
