  • The OPS (Optical Particle Sensor) using light scattering from the particles (real-time measurement without physical contact to the particles) can be used for cleanroom or atmospheric environment monitoring. For particles smaller than 300 nm, the detection efficiency becomes lower as scattered light decreases with particle size. To obtain higher detection efficiency with small particles, the flow field in particle chamber and the detection volume should be designed optimally to achieve maximum scattered light from the particles. In this study, a commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT was used to simulate the gas flow field and particle trajectories with various optical chamber designs for 300 nm PSL particle. For estimation of laser viewing volume, we used a commercial computational optical design program ZEMAX. The results will be a great help in the development of OPS which can measure small particles with higher detection efficiency.

  • The elemental characteristics of atmospheric aerosols were investigated as a function of particle size and water solubility. The aerosol particles were samples at 12 individual size ranges between 0.01 and 30㎛. Collected aerosol particles were separated into both soluble and insoluble components. The concentrations of 15 elements in both components were determined by a PIXE analysis using a 2.0 MeV-proton beam. In general, the mass size distribution of particulate matter was represented as a bimodal distribution. The maximum rations of S in July and December were 5.5 and 3.8 %, and they appeared in the size range of 0.47∼1.17㎛(stage No. 6 or 7) . The ratios of a S at non-separated size were 3.1 and 2.2 % in July and December, respectively, On the other hand, the maximum rations of Si in July and December were 7.0 and 5.4% and they appeared in the size range of 5.1∼30㎛(stage No. 0∼2). The ratios of Si at the non-separated size were 2.1 and 1.8% in July and December, respectively, The mass diameter of 12 elements ranged between 0.59㎛ of S and 3.20 of Fe. More than 90% of atmospheric aerosols consisted of the light elements such as C, N, O, H and Al. The soluble component was dominant in the smaller size range and the insoluble component in the larger size range. Large portions of Si. Ti and Fe existed in insoluble state. By contrast, S, Cl, Ca, Zn and Br were dissolved in water.

  • The non-exhaust coarse, fine, and ultrafine particles were characterized by on-road driving measurements using a mobile sampling system. The on-road driving measurements under constant speed driving revealed that mass concentrations of roadway particles (RWPs) were distributed mainly in a size range of 2~3 ${\mu}m$ and slightly increased with increasing vehicle speed. Under braking conditions, the mode diameters of the particles were generally similar with those obtained under constant speed conditions. However, the PM concentrations emitted during braking condition were significantly higher than those produced under normal driving conditions. Higher number concentrations of ultrafine particles smaller than 70 nm were observed during braking conditions, and the number concentration of particles sampled 90 mm above the pavement was 6 times higher than that obtained 40 mm above the pavement. Under cornering conditions, the number concentrations of RWPs sampled 40 mm above the pavement surface were higher than those sampled 90 mm above the pavement. This might be explained that a nucleation burst of a lot of vapor evaporated from the interaction between the tire and the road pavement under braking conditions continuously occurred by cooling during the transport to the sampling height 90 mm, while, for the case of cornering situations, the ultrafine particle formation was completed before the transport to the sampling height of 40 mm.

  • Recent studies have indicated that the observed nitric acid ($HNO_3$) uptake rates ($R_{HNO_3}$) onto dust particles are much slower than $R_{HNO_3}$ used in the previous modeling studies. Three factors that possibly affect $R_{HNO_3}$ onto dust particles are discussed in this study: (1) the magnitude of reaction probability of $HNO_3$ (${\gamma}_{HNO_3}$), (2) aerosol surface areas, and (3) gas-phase $HNO_3$ mixing ratio. Through the discussion presented here, it is shown that the use of accurate ${\gamma}_{HNO_3}$ is of primary importance. We suggest that the use of ${\gamma}_{HNO_3}$ values between $\sim10^{-3}$ and $\sim10^{-5}$ produces more realistic results than the use of ${\gamma}_{HNO_3}$ values between $\sim10^{-1}$ and $\sim10^{-2}$ does, more accurately modeling the nitrate formation characteristics on/in dust particles. We also discuss two different types of aerosol surface area, active and geometric, since the use of different aerosol surface areas often leads to an erroneous result in $R_{HNO_3}$. In addition, the levels of the gas-phase $HNO_3$ are investigated with the example cases of TRACE-P DC-8 flights in East Asia. The $HNO_3$ levels were found to be relatively high, indicating that they can not limit nitrate formation in dust particles.

  • In this study, the characteristics of the dust emission according to the presence or absence of operation of the gas stove were analyzed by particle size analysis and density estimation while the mackerel was cooked while the fan was placed on the gas stove used in the home. The experiment was carried out using 20 mackerel of normal size at home. Commercially available canola oil was used as edible oil. In order to understand the characteristics such as particle size distribution of fine dust, light scattering measurement method which can be measured at intervals of several seconds was used. Particles generated by combustion of gas stove, particles formed by heating cooking oil, and particles generated by heating mackerel fish meat are judged to be nano size particles smaller than $1{\mu}m$. Therefore, it is necessary to use precise measurement method rather than the measurement method using the filter which is currently being measured in the measurement of the particles discharged from the fuel combustion or food cooking in the future. Analyzing the particle size and density of the dust emitted from the cooking stove is expected to contribute technically to the reduction of dust emissions from the cooking process of gas and fuel facilities at home and commercial facilities.

  • Filter-based sampling techniques are the conventional way to collect particulate matter, but particles collected and entangled in the filter fibers are difficult to be removed and thus not suited for the following cell- and animal-based exposure experiments. Collecting aerosol particles in powder form using a cyclone instead of a filter would be a possible way to solve this problem. We developed a hybrid virtual-impactor/cyclone high-volume fine and coarse particle sampler and assessed its performance. The developed system achieved 50% collection efficiency with components having the following aerodynamic cut-off diameters: virtual impactor, $2.4{\mu}m$; fine-particle cyclone, $0.18-0.30{\mu}m$; and coarse-particle cyclone, $0.7{\mu}m$. The virtual impactor used in our set-up had good $PM_{2.5}$ separation performance, comparable to that reported for a conventional real impactor. The newly developed sampler can collect fine and coarse particles simultaneously, in combination with exposure testing with collected fine- and coarse-particulate matter samples, should help researchers to elucidate the mechanism by which airborne particles result in adverse health effect in detail.
