  • A new numerical weather prediction and dispersion model, the Operational Multi-scale Environment model with Grid Adaptivity(OMEGA) including an embedded Atmospheric Dispersion Model(ADM), is introduced as a next generation atmospheric simulation system for real-time hazard predictions, such as severe weather or the transport of hazardous release. OMEGA is based on an unstructured grid that can facilitate a continuously varying horizontal grid resolution ranging from 100 km down to 1 km and a vertical resolution from 20 -30 meters in the boundary layer to 1 km in the free atmosphere. OMEGA is also naturally scale spanning and time. In particular, the unstructured grid cells in the horizontal dimension can increase the local resolution to better capture the topography or important physical features of the atmospheric circulation and cloud dynamics. This means the OMEGA can readily adapt its grid to a stationary surface, terrain features, or dynamic features in an evolving weather pattern. While adaptive numerical techniques have yet to be extensively applied in atmospheric models, the OMEGA model is the first to exploit the adaptive nature of an unstructured gridding technique for atmospheric simulation and real-time hazard prediction. The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the OMEGA model, the OMEGA system, and a detailed comparison of OMEGA forecast results with observed data.

  • Effect of the nonuniform grid on the two-dimensional transport equation was investigated in terms of theoretical analysis and finite difference method (FDM). The nonuniform grid having a typical structure of the numerical weather forecast model was incorporated in the vertical direction, while the uniform grid was used in the zonal direction. The staggered and non-staggered grid were placed in the vertical and zonal direction, respectively. Time stepping was performed with the third-order Runge Kutta scheme. An error analysis of the spatial discretization on the nonuniform grid was carried out, which indicated that the combined effect of the nonuniform grid and advection velocity produced either numerical diffusion or numerical adverse-diffusion. An analytic function is used for the quantitative evaluation of the errors associated with the discretized transport equation. Numerical experiments with the non-uniformity of vertical grid were found to support the analysis.

  • A technique for the simulation of atmospheric boundary layers in wind tunnels is developed and tested experimentally. The device consists of a grid made of seven horizontal and vertical evenly distributed bars in which air injection holes are drilled in order to influence the flow in the wind tunnel. The air flow in each bar can be controlled independently. Firstly, the device is used together with a rough carpet, which covers the test section floor, in order to simulate the boundary-layer characteristics over an open rural area. Hot-wire measurements, performed at different positions in the test-section, show the capability of the grid in generating the required boundary layer. An acceptable agreement with statistical values of mean velocity and turbulence profiles has been achieved, together with a good span-wise homogeneity. The results are also compared with those of a passive simulation technique based on the use of spires.

  • To predict diffusion and movement of k pollutants In coastal urban region a numerical simulation shouts be consider atmospheric flow field with land-sea breeze, mountain-valley wand and urban effects. In this study we used Lagrangian [article dispersion method In the atmospheric flow field of Pusan coastal region to depict diffusion and movement of the Pollutants emoted from particular sources and employed two grid system, one for large scale calculating region with the coarse mesh grid (CMG) and the other for the small region with the One mesh 914 (FMG). It was found that the dispersion pattern of the pollutants followed local circulation system in coastal urban area and wale air pollutants exhausted from Sasang moved Into Baekyang and Jang moutain, air pollutants from Janglim moved into Hwameong-dong region.

  • The purpose of the study is to produce the surface ground temperature diagnostically using surface EBM with the use of GRID model in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Certain characteristics have been analyzed for local slope effect, coastal effect and influence of high orographic aspect on the surface ground temperature. We present discussions on the meteorological responsibility for their temperature. The derived surface ground temperatures can be provided for comparison with those from satellite-based observ ation.

  • Localized atmospheric conditions between multi-reference stations can bring the tropospheric delay irregularity that becomes an error terms affecting positioning accuracy in network RTK environment. Imbalanced network error can affect the network solutions and it can corrupt the entire network solution and degrade the correction accuracy. If an anomaly could be detected before the correction message was generated, it is possible to eliminate the anomalous satellite that can cause degradation of the network solution during the tropospheric delay anomaly. An atmospheric grid that consists of four meteorological stations was used to detect an inhomogeneous weather conditions and tropospheric anomaly applied AWSs (automatic weather stations) meteorological data. The threshold of anomaly detection algorithm was determined based on the statistical weather data of AWSs for 5 years in an atmospheric grid. From the analytic results of anomaly detection algorithm it showed that the proposed algorithm can detect an anomalous satellite with an anomaly flag generation caused tropospheric delay anomaly during localized atmospheric conditions between stations. It was shown that the different precipitation condition between stations is the main factor affecting tropospheric anomalies.

  • Extreme tropospheric anomalies such as typhoons or regional torrential rain can degrade positioning accuracy of the GPS signal. It becomes one of the main error terms affecting high-precision positioning solutions in network RTK. This paper proposed a detection algorithm to be used during atmospheric anomalies in order to detect the tropospheric irregularities that can degrade the quality of correction data due to network errors caused by inhomogeneous atmospheric conditions between multi-reference stations. It uses an atmospheric grid that consists of four meteorological stations and estimates the troposphere zenith total delay difference at a low performance point in an atmospheric grid. AWS (automatic weather station) meteorological data can be applied to the proposed tropospheric anomaly detection algorithm when there are different atmospheric conditions between the stations. The concept of probability density distribution of the delta troposphere slant delay was proposed for the threshold determination.

  • This study aimed at analyzing the sensitivity of ozone simulation in accordance with the meteorological nudging for a high nocturnal ozone episode. To demonstrate the effectiveness of nudging methods (e.g., nudging techniques and application domains), the following six experiments were designed: (1) control without nudging, (2) experiment with application of observation nudging to all domains (domain 1~4), and (3)~(6) experiments with application of grid nudging to domain 1, domain 1~2, domain 1~3 and all domains, respectively. As a result, the meteorological nudging had a direct (improvement of input data) and indirect (estimate natural emission) effect on ozone simulation. Nudging effects during the daytime were greater than those during the nighttime due to low accuracy of wind direction during the nighttime. On comparison of the nudging techniques, the experiments in which grid nudging was applied showed more improved results than the experiments in which observation nudging was applied. At this time point, the simulated concentrations were generally similar to the observed concentrations due to the increase in the nudging effect when grid nudging was applied up to the sub-domain. However, for high nocturnal ozone uptakes, the experiment in which grid nudging was applied do domain 1~3 showed better results than the other experiments. This is because, when grid nudging was applied to the high resolution domain (e.g., domain 4 with 1 km), the local characteristics were removed due to the smoothing effects of meteorological conditions.

  • To predict the effects of air pollutant in the coastal region, we have developed the air pollutant model, the reaction model and the deposition of NO, $NO_2, and O_3$. And the numerical model of air pollutant concentration employed the nested technique to calculate with the higher resolution for the area. The nested technique used two grid systems, one for the large scale calculating region with the coarse mesh grid (CMG) and the other for the small scale region with the fine grid (FMG). In other to prove the validity of the simulation model the calculations were conducted for the present situation. The results of them reasonably agree with the observed data and proved the validity of the model.
