  • Atmospheric corrosion severity associated with aircraft parking environment was studied using metallic specimens, and temperature and humidity sensors installed at each aircraft operating base. Data were analyzed after a year of exposure. Silver was used to measure chloride deposition by integrating X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiles. Carbon steel was utilized to determine the corrosion rate by measuring the weight loss. The time of wetness was determined using temperature and humidity sensor data. Analysis of variance followed by Tukey's "honestly significant difference" test indicated that atmospheric environment inside the shelter varied significantly from that of unsheltered parking environment. The corrosion rate of unsheltered area also varies with the roof. Hierarchical clustering analysis of the measured data was used to classify air bases into groups with similar atmospheric corrosion. Bases where aircraft park at a shelter can be grouped together regardless of geographical location. Unsheltered bases located inland can also be grouped together with sheltered bases as long as the aircraft are parked under the roof. Environmental severity index was estimated using collected data and validated using the measured corrosion rate.

  • As environmental pollution has become severe due to the rapid increase in pollutant generation in the air, measurement, collection, and analysis of atmospheric environment information plays an important role. However, it is difficult to measure the high-resolution and real-time atmospheric environment of the cities and tourist spots with high population mobility only by measuring equipment of stationary measuring stations. Therefore, this paper proposes a portable atmospheric environment measurement system for real-time measurement and monitoring of atmospheric environment information. The proposed system is a portable client with a low-power wireless communication method. It is possible to reliably transmit and receive the measured data through a multi-threaded server to monitor the trend of pollutants in the air in real-time.

  • This study calculated wind speed at the height of 10 m using a disaster prediction model(Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model, FPHLM) that was developed and used in the United States. Using its distributions, a usable information of surface wind was produced for the purpose of disaster prevention when the typhoon attack. The advanced research version of the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) was used in this study, and two domains focusing on South Korea were determined through two-way nesting. A horizontal time series and vertical profile analysis were carried out to examine whether the model provided a resonable simulation, and the meteorological factors, including potential temperature, generally showed the similar distribution with observational data. We determined through comparison of observations that data taken at 700 hPa and used as input data to calculate wind speed at the height of 10 m for the actual terrain was suitable for the simulation. Using these results, the wind speed at the height of 10 m for the actual terrain was calculated and its distributions were shown. Thus, a stronger wind occurred in coastal areas compared to inland areas showing that coastal areas are more vulnerable to strong winds.

  • This study considers mean skin temperature to calculate expected temperature using the new heat balance model because the skin temperature is the most important element affecting the heat balance outdoors. For this, we measured the skin temperature in high temperature condition of Korea and applied it to calculate the expected temperature. The calculated expected temperature is compared with the result calculated using previous models which use the estimated mean skin temperature by considering metabolic rate only. Results show that the expected temperatures are higher when measured mean skin temperature is applied to the model, compared to the expected temperature calculated by applying mean skin temperature data calculated using metabolic rate like previous models. The observed mean skin temperature was more suitable for outside conditions and expected temperature is underestimated when mean skin temperature calculated by the equation using metabolic rate is used. The model proposed in this study has a few limitations yet, but it can be applied in various ways to facilitate practical responses to extreme heat.

  • Since the atmospheric clearness index is main factor for evaluating global-dimming of atmosphere environment, it is necessary to estimate its characteristics all over the major cities in Korea. We have begun collecting clearness index data since 1982 at 16 different cities and considerable effort has been made for constructing a standard value from measured data at each city. The new clearness data for global-dimming analysis will be extensively used by evaluating atmospheric environment as well as by solar PV application system designer or users. From the results, we can conclude that 1) Yearly mean 61.9% of the atmospheric clearness index was evaluated for clear day all over 2) A significant difference of atmospheric clearness index is observed between 1982-1989 and 1990-1997, 1998-2005 through 16 different cities in Korea.

  • In this study, the effects of an urban thermal environment on air quality were investigated using hourly surface weather observation data and air quality data over six summers from 2000 to 2005 in two cities on the Korean Peninsula. One, the city of Daegu, is representative of basin topography and the other, the city of Busan, represents a coastal area. It is known that the characteristics of an urban thermal environment are represented as an "urban heat island". Here, we focus on the nighttime urban thermal environment, which is called a "tropical night", during the summer. On tropical nights in Busan, the temperature and cloud cover levels were higher than on non-tropical nights. Wind speed did not appear to make a difference even on a tropical night. However, the frequency of southwestern winds from the sea was higher during tropical nights. The prevailing southwest winds in all areas meant an inflow of air from the sea. So at most of the air quality stations, the ozone concentration during tropical nights was lower than during non-tropical nights. In Daegu, the tropical nights had higher temperatures and cloud covers. Despite these higher temperatures, the ozone concentration during the tropical nights was lower than that on non-tropical nights at most of the air quality stations. This feature was caused by low irradiance, which in turn caused an increased cloud cover. Wind speed was stronger during the tropical nights and dispersed the air pollutants. These meteorological characteristics of the tropical nights reduced ozone concentrations in the Daegu Basin.

  • Orographic effect is one of the important factors to induce Local circulations and to make atmospheric turbulence, so it is necessary to use the exact topographic data for prediction of local circulations. In order to clarify the sensitivity of the spatial resolution of topography data, numerical simulations using several topography data with different spatial resolution are carried out under stable and unstable synoptic conditions. The results are as follows: 1) Influence of topographic data resolution on local circulation tends to be stronger at simulation with fine grid than that with coarse grid. 2) The hight of mountains in numerical model become mote reasonable with high resolution topographic data, so the orographic effect is also emphasized and clarified when the topographic data resolution is higher. 2) The higher the topographic resolution is, the stronger the mountain effect is. When used topographic data resolution become fine, topography in numerical model becomes closer to real topography. 3) The topographic effect tends to be stronger when atmospheric stability is strong stable. 4) Although spatial resolution of topographic data is not fundamental factor for dramatic improvement of weather prediction accuracy, some influence on small scale circulation can be recognized, especially in fluid dynamic simulation.

  • Precise analysis of local winds for the prediction of atmospheric phenomena in the planetary boundary layer is extremely important. In this study, wind profiler data with fine time resolution and density in the lower troposphere were used to improve the performance of a numerical atmospheric model of a complex coastal area. Three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) was used to assimilate profiler data. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of the profiler data on model results. First, we performed an observing system experiment. Second, we implemented a sensitivity test of data assimilation intervals to extend the advantages of the profiler to data assimilation. The lowest errors were observed when using both radio sonde and profiler data to interpret vertical and surface observation data. The sensitivity to the assimilation interval differed according to the synoptic conditions when the focus was on the surface results. The sensitivity to the weak synoptic effect was much larger than to the strong synoptic effect. The hourly-assimilated case showed the lowest root mean square error (RMSE, 1.62 m/s) and highest index of agreement (IOA, 0.82) under weak synoptic conditions, whereas the statistics in the 1, 3, and 6 hourly-assimilated cases were similar under strong synoptic conditions. This indicates that the profiler data better represent complex local circulation in the model with high time and vertical resolution, particularly when the synoptic effect is weak.
