The characteristics of one year observation aerosol data in Seoul, 200 I was studied using an OPC (Optical Particle Counter). The size resolved aerosol number concentrations of 0.3 ∼ 25 11m were measured. The results were compared with PM$_{10}$ mass concentration data under various meteorological conditions including dust and precipitation events. For fine particles whose diameter is less than 2.23 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, the number concentration increases in the early morning which is considered due to transportation. while the coarse mode particles increase during daytime. This increase can be explained as local sources and human activities near sampling site. Hourly averaged data show that there exists diurnal variation. Generally, PM$_{10}$ data showed a similar tendency with OPC data. The size resolved OPC data showed that the particles of 0.5 ∼ 3.67 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are positively correlated with PM$_{10}$ data. The accumulated volume fraction of size resolved aerosol concentration in 0.5 ∼ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed that 0.5 ∼ 2.23 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ particles occupied 59.2% of total aerosol volume of 0.5 ∼ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$./TEX>.

To provide better insights into the factors and processes regulating the geochemical behavior of airborne lead (Pb), we have investigated several important aspects of its distribution characteristics using the data collected from the Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus during 1989 through 1994. Although the Pb data in the area reflected the effects of many anthropogenic activities ongoing in the area, the data were quite useful to assess the geochemical facets affecting the temporal distributions of lead as well as particulate matter (PM). The analysis of these data indicated that the Pb patterns were characteristic of enriched Pb levels during odd-numbered years relative to even-numbered years, while those of PM were exhibiting pronouncingly different patterns. Despite many similarities and differences found between year-to-year distribution patterns, of Pb data, it was possible to discuss the facts associated with relatively high concentrations in the years 1991 and 1993 via normalization of Pb against PM data. According to this procedure, we were able to conclude that relative enrichment in Pb levels during 1991 was due to enhanced input of PM, while that of the year 1993 came from more chemically-oriented processes such as active adsorptive scavenging of Pb onto the PM surface. Based on our comparative analysis of the size-fractionated PM and Pb data sets, we propse that two distinctive mechanisms that are both of phyical (1991) and chemical nature (1993) exerted controls over the observed distribution patterns of airborne Pb in the atmosphere of Suwon.

In order to understand regional wind characteristics and to estimate offshore wind resources, a wind map of the Korean Peninsula was established using remote-sensing data from the satellite, U.S. NASA Quik SCAT which has been deployed for the Sea Winds Project since 1999. According to the linear regression result between the wind map data and in-situ marine-buoy data, the correlation factor was greatly improved up to 0.87 by blending the remote-sensing data of Quik SCAT with U.S. NCEP/NCAR CDAS reanalysis data to eliminate precipitation interference and to increase temporal resolution. It is found from the established wind map that the wind speed in winter is prominent temporally and the South Sea shows spatially high energy density over the wind class 6. The reason is deduced that the north-west winds through the Yellow Sea and the north-east winds through the East Sea derived by the low pressure developed in Japan are accelerated passing through the Korea Channel and formed high wind energy region in the South Sea; the same trends are confirmed from the statistical analysis of the meteorological observation data of KMA.

Attention plays vital role either students academic performance in classroom or work performance of workers. This study was accomplished among elementary school students of elementary school classroom for two years. Three experiment cases were designed based on the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) indexes. Thermal environment and PMV were directly monitored; Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) and Comfort Sensation Vote (CSV) were analyzed based on survey data; and attention was analyzed for different comfort level using FAIR program. PMV, TSV and CSV were varied with the change in thermal environment and there was not noticeable gender influence on impact. The good correlation between thermal environment, PMV, TSV and CSV confirmed the impact of thermal environment on indoor comfort. There were different impacts on attention with comfort conditions. Academic attention of low attention group i.e. weak students, can be improved by providing the comfort environment. Thermal environment influences the comfort and the comfort influences the attention, it is possible to assess the impact of thermal environment on attention in further.

The suspended particulate matters had been collected by a cascade impactor having 9 size fragnated stages for 2 years (Dec. 1989 to Nov. 1991) in Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus. The particulate matters were then collected on each stage by membrane filters. The weight concentration on each stage was estimated by a microbalance and further chemical element concentrations were determined by an XRF system. The study focused on developing of a receptor model using the TTFA (target transformation factor analysis) to apportion aerosol mass with the 30 ambient data sets. Each data set consists of the 8 size-ranged subdata sets characterized by 13 element variables. Even though a couple of sources could not be identified, three to five sources were extracted from each aerosol size-range, and then 9 statistical source profiles were generated. Finally, source contribution of particulate matters on each size-range could be estimated in Suwon area.

In this technical information, the TSP measurement data at Gosan between 1992 and 1999 are presented and analyzed. The average ratio of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ /nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ is highest in March. The annual average ratio concentration of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ increased and it was found that the annual average ratio of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ /nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ increased during the period, probably due to the change of emission characteristics of China.

This study was performed to develop and to evaluate an air quality model for determining long-term average concentration of sulfur-dioxide for the Seoul area. CDMQC, TCM-2, and ISCLT were applied and tested in this comparison studies with same point source, area source emission data, and meteorological data to calculate seasonal concentration. Mean emission height of area sources was assumed 6m. Six different values of initial sigma Z for eah stability class were used for area sources. And decay half life was not considered in the model calculations. The results are highly correlated with measurements, the correlation coefficients of calculated and measured for CDMQC, TCM-2, and ISCLT are 0.85, 0.93, and 0.96, respectively.

ISCLT3 model was applied in Seoul metropolitan area to investigate the source-receptor relationships among 17 cities in the Kyonggi Province. For the purpose of the model simulation, emission rates of NO$_2$, SOx, and PM(sub)10 were prepared for grid scale with 1$\times$1 km, and receptors were located on every 2$\times$2 km grid. Meterological data for the last 10 years(88~97) were used as input data. According to our study, NO$_2$ concentration of the cities ranged from 10 to 45 ppb with the highest value appearing from Puchon city. The concentrations of SOx and PM(sub)10 concentrations fell in the range of 5~20 ppb and 20~70$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively. It was also found out that air quality in one city can be affected greatly by the air pollutants originating from other cities.

The research described in this paper is conducted to estimate the short-term concentrations of nonreactive pollutants such as CO and TSP from vehicle emissions near Kyungbu Highway. An emphasis is placed on the development of a model for a hourly traffic volume for each vehicle type, which is based on real traffic data. By using the model and the calculated emission factor due to vehicle speed for each vehicle type, the emission rate of CO and TSP for each traffic line is computed. The hourly emission rate and meteorological data are used to simulate by HIWAY-2 for the distance of 5m and 10m from the downwind edge of Kyungbu Highway located in relatively uncomplicated terrain.

Yellow sands often occur in Korea during April and May each year, and they are believed to come from the Mongolian Gobi desert as the snow starts to melt in Spring time. Since the analysis of aerosol particulates can hardly distinguish the origin of particulates, the isentropic analysis of meteorological data is often used for the trajectories of the long range transport of yellows sand or air pollutants. The yellow sand case of April 9 $\sim$ 15, 1988, in Korea is analyzed for the identification of long range transport of yellow sands and their trajectories in East Asia, using isentropic analyses. We have tranformed the ECMWF grid data, analyzed in pressure coordinates, into the isentropic coordinates and then have traced the 286 K and 290 K air mass which started Gobi desert. The result shows the transport of yellow sands from the Gobi desert to the Korean peninsula.
