The effects of a green buffer zone to protect a residential area from air pollution from industrial facilities and traffic was examined by analyzing the case of a green buffer zone in the Shiwha industrial complex. The green buffer zone is 175 m wide. The intent was to assess the dispersion patterns of atmospheric air pollutants and the reduction in concentration around the green buffer zone. To measure atmospheric sulfur dioxide$(SO_2)$ and nitrogen dioxide$(NO_2)$ concentration, badge-type passive samplers were used and set up at 76 locations in order to measure the concentration of air pollutants with respect to the spatial dispersion. The weighted mean values of $SO_2\;and\;NO_2$ concentration were $3\~57 ppb\;and\;18\~62 ppb$ and the differences among the green buffer zone, the industrial area and the residential areas were $0.7\~1.1 ppb$. Mean values of atmospheric concentrations of $NO_2$ were similar in industrial and, residential areas and the green buffer zone. Results of the study show that the effect of the green buffer zone on reducing the dispersion of air pollutants was very low. This study also recommends that micro-climate, i.e., wind direction should be considered as a factor for planning and design of green buffer zones.
The dose from a possible accident at a microwave-based spent resin mixture treatment facility that was to be installed and operated at the Wolsong nuclear power plant was analyzed to evaluate the radiological safety prior to its installation and operation. The dose to which workers and nearby residents are likely to be exposed was calculated based on the atmospheric dispersion and deposition factors using the XOQDOQ code. The highest atmospheric dispersion factors were 1.349E-05 s/m3 (workers) and 1.534E-06 s/m3 (residents). The highest doses due to emissions from the mock-up tank before operation were 1.91E-06 mSv (workers) and 1.78E-07 mSv (residents). Even after 3 h of operation, emissions from the mock-up tank had the greatest impact ranging from 4.63E-08 to 1.24E-06 mSv (workers) and 2.74E-10 to 1.16E-07 mSv (residents), respectively. The doses were 7.09E-09-4.55E-07 mSv and 4.18E-11-4.25E-08 mSv at 4-5 h of operation, and the maximum doses after operation reached 5.69E-07 mSv and 5.31E-08 mSv for the workers and residents, respectively. Even at the exclusion area boundary (EAB), 4.76E-08-9.51E-07 mSv (annual dose:9.52E-05–1.90E-03 mSv/y) was below the dose limit of the EAB, and the safety of the facility installation inside the NPP was confirmed.
The goles of this study were that we calculated the difference between the emission factors currently used officially and the emission factors that calculated by atmospheric dispersion modeling results and actual field measurements of dust concentrations and that we investigated how we applied to the emission factors appropriate to the reality in Korea. At the results, we calculated the Business As Usual ambient dust concentration concerning U.S. EPA method emissions, and we thought that the emission reduction efficiency had to be 99.7% if the ambient dust concentration that measured in this study could be satisfied. In other words, U.S. EPA dust emission calculation method is very overestimated than reality, so it is important that our country obtain reliable construction site dust emissions estimation methods by continuous researches.
The purpose of this study is to compare the usefulness between Gaussian dispersion model and receptor model with the experimental result of the dispersion tracing of the particulate pollutants from Taean coal-fired power plants. For this purpose, the component analysis of the collected PM 10 samples was performed. In order to trace the pollution sources, factor analysis was done with the result of the component analysis. As a result of the correlativity analysis of the fifteen power plants' profiles offered by US EPA, the correlativity of No.11202 source profile showed highest rate up to 84.5%. Thus it was adopted as proper one and the contribution rate by each pollution source was calculated by Chemical Mass Balance (CMB)-8 model. The contribution rate, which was the effect rate of the power plants on each measuring point, were calculated with a range of 24∼52% and the standard error was below 0.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. This indicates the selection of the source profile was appropriate. Also, the concentrations of each point were calculated by the ISCST3 which is suggested by US EPA as one of the regulatory Gaussian dispersion model. The calculation result showed that the predicted concentration was 50∼58 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, comparing with the measured result of 9∼65 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. It was found that the concentration calculated by ISCST3 was underpredicted. It was thought that the receptor model was more favorable than the Gaussian dispersion model in estimating the effect of the particulate matter on a certain receptive point.

The concentration fields in the proximities of a local gas emission source are experimentally analyzed in several combinations of wind incidences and source emissions. These conditions are determined by the plume buoyancy, emission velocity and incident flow wind speed. Concentration measurements are performed by an aspirating probe in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The analysis included the mean concentration values and the intensity of concentration fluctuations in a neutral atmospheric boundary layer flow. Different configurations are tested: an isolated stack in a homogeneous terrain and a stack with a bluff body in close proximity, located windward and leeward from the emission source. The experimental mean concentration values are contrasted with Gaussian profiles and the dilution factor is analyzed with respect to the empirical curves of the minimum dilution. Finally, a study on the plume intermittency is performed in a cross-sectional plane near the emission source. It is possible to highlight the following observations: a) plume vertical asymmetry in the case of an isolated emission source, b) significant differences in the dispersion process related to the relative location of the emission source and bluff body effects, and c) different probabilistic behavior of the concentration fluctuation data in a cross-sectional measurement plane inside the plume.
Simple correlation analysis, factor analysis, and multi-variate analysis have been performed to analyze the relationship between air pollution and meteorological factors for air pollution and meteorological data measured at Kwanghwamun in Seoul during the period of one year(January 1990 $\sim$ December 1990). As a result of simple correlation and factor analysis, $SO_2$, TSP and CO concentrations have shown high negative correlation with temperature and among these indicating that these are related with pollutant emission trend based upon heating fuel usage. Ozone has a good corrleation with solar radiation and relative humidity to have a closed relation with $O_3$ generation reaction mechanism. The result of multi-variate correlation analysis shows that the concentration of $SO_2$ and CO are adequate for correlation model with ambient temperature and wind speed and $O_3$ concentrations are adequate for that with solar radiation and wind speed. $SO_2$ and CO levels are considered to be affected first of all by heating fuel usage as a emssion source and wind speed as a dispersion effect. The $SO_2$ concentration in the condition that the temperature fall below zero is explained by multilicative model with wind speed, only one variable.
Long-term air and weather data monitored during the period of 2000 to 2009 were analyzed to quantitatively estimate the precipitation scavenging and wind dispersion contributions of ambient $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ in Korea. Both air pollutants and meteorological data had been respectively collected from 120 stations by the Ministry of Environment and from 20 weather stations by the Korea Meteorological Administrations in all parts of Korea. To stochastically identify the relation between a meteorological factor and an air pollutant, we initially defined the SR (scavenging ratio) and the DR (dispersion ratio) to separately calculate the precipitation and wind speed effects on the removal of a specific air pollutant. We could then estimate the OSC (overall scavenging contribution) and the ODC (overall dispersion contribution) with considering sectoral precipitation and wind speed probability density distributions independently. In this study, the SRs for both $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ were generally increased with increasing the amounts of precipitation and then the OSCs for $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ were estimated by 22.3% and 15.7% on an average in Korea, respectively. However, the trend of the DR was quite different from that of SR. The DR for $PM_{10}$ was increased with increasing wind speed up to 2.5 m/s and further the DR for $NO_2$ showed a minimum in the range of $1<WS{\leq}1.5$. The ODCs for $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ were estimated by 14.9% and 1.0% in Korea, respectively. Finally, we have also provided an interesting case study observed in Seoul.
Base on emission factors derived from National Institute of Environmental Research, Particulate matter from combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) has been estimated to be a important source of $PM_{10}$. Generally there is no serious emission of particulate matter in CCPPs. because the fuel of them is natural gas. But emission gas after long shut down season has very high dust content. Therefore $PM_{10}$ emission rate is dependent on its operation mode. In this study, particulate dispersion study for new city near CCPPs complex has performed using CALPUFF model for three case. $PM_{10}$ concentration has big difference between normal operation and 2 case start-up condition after long shutdown. In normal operating conditions, daily $0.32{\sim}0.50{\mu}g/m^3$ influence on of the surrounding area. But when 1~2 aerobic high concentration discharged conditions, average concentration is higher about $9.2{\sim}34.1{\mu}g/m^3$ than normal operating conditions.
